Welcome to Contest-of-the-Week! With the release of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire on the horizon, the attention of Pokémon fans everywhere turns to Hoenn, and all the cool and interesting Pokemon that live there.
Every week, we'll be looking at a few of the many Pokémon you'll meet along your journey through the Hoenn region, and asking for your opinions on them and how they stack up next to their counterparts or rival Pokemon looking to fill the same spot on your team.
vs
Next stop is the Weather Institute, but you'll arrive only to find it's been taken over by the evil team! Drive them off and the scientists there will reward you with the Weather Pokemon, Castform. Fortree City lies just across the bridge by the Weather Institute, but before you can get there your rival will arrive and challenge you yet again. Beating them will net you the HM03 before your rival takes off in a huff. However once you arrive in the treetop city, you'll find your path to the Gym blocked by an invisible object. Using a Devon Scope obtained from Steven will reveal a Kecleon blocking the way, which will take off into the forest. There are plenty of other Kecleon blocking paths in the area, so you'll have a few more chances to catch one.
Both of these Pokemon are single stage Normal types with an ability that lets them change their types around. Castform's Forecast lets its typing match whichever weather is in effect, which combined with its Weather Ball attack can add up to some decent damage. Its stats are below average all round at exactly base 70, but its ability to change typing to get a strong match up against many opponents can help compensate. Kecleon's Colour Change lets it copy the typing of moves used against it, which often results in the chameleon resisting that move if used again. Its stats are more focused than Castform as it specialises in tanking special hits, but the downside is that Colour Change can be exploited and used against it by the opponent. Fortunately it gained the Protean ability in Gen VI, giving it a more decisive way to change its typing.
Which type changing Normal type do you prefer, and why?
-Which has the better design?
-Which one is easier to train?
-Which is more useful throughout the game?
-Which do you think will be better in ORAS?
-Which is more useful in the competitive environment?
-Do you like how their abilities were implemented? If not, how would you change them?
Let the contest begin!
Next week:Banette vs Dusclops
