I suspect there's a significant degree of overlap between this community and traditional roleplayers & wargamers, and what better way to synthesise these interests than with a character creation exercise! Listed below are four easy and relatively quick steps, drawn up by a crack team of highly specialised Yours Truly, to realise your own potential as a denizen of the Pokémon world.
Determine your typing
There's a number of ways you could do this:
Determine your stats
For this we're going to use dice, or 'D6' in gaming lingo (here's an online tool you can use). We're going to roll 2D6, three times. We're also going to roll 3D6, three times. My results were:
There are currently 267 abilities in the game, and we're going to pick out two using a random number generator.
Re-roll any abilities which are ultra-specific or induce form changes (such as Eiscue's Ice Face). You may then raise or lower one or both numbers by one point, to get more desirable abilities. I got:
Determine your notable moves
This part isn't strictly necessary, but it'll play a big role in determining your theoretical playstyle. Let's be charitable and assume that everyone gets all the 'universal' moves - Toxic, Protect, Rest etc.
Draw up a list of ten moves you would like to have. They must all be either: of your type(s); Normal-type; or available via TM and TR in Sword and Shield. You may select a single signature move belonging to another Pokémon (matching the above criteria), but this will bring your total list of moves down to eight maximum, as a trade-off.
Enter the moves into this tool, which will randomly sort them into two groups. Pick one, and these are your notable moves. The tool gave me this:
And after some deliberation, I'm going with the first group for my notable moves.
Bring it all together
And that's that! The final result is:
Wyndon
Type: Poison/Dark
Notable moves: Spikes, Encore, Toxic Spikes, Pain Split, Sludge Bomb
I'm on tenterhooks to see what you guys come up with! Equally, any suggestions on how to improve or build on any aspect of the process are warmly welcomed. Re-rolls and second attempts to get the numbers you want are against the spirit of the exercise, but it can easily be amended if you're consistently getting frustrating results.

There's a number of ways you could do this:
- Simply select the type(s) you would like to be
- Use this (ahem) excellent thread to pick out types to match your personality
- Use any of the thousands of online quizzes (though to be honest, many of these are a bit ropey)
- Randomly select one or two using a random number generator like this one
