So with these games we have at least five different forms of currency:
  • Standard money, used for purchasing items from Poké Marts, clothing, and makeovers
  • Battle Points, which can be exchanged for goods at the Battle Tower and in Hammerlocke
  • Watts, used for commerce with Watt Traders throughout the Wild Area, employing the services of the Digging Duo, upgrading the Rotom Bike, and upgrading the Master Dojo
  • Armorite Ore, used for learning moves from the Move Tutor, employing Lady Clear to erase your Pokémon's effort values, and having Watt Daddy dig you up a trove of Watts
  • Dynite Ore, used for purchasing items from the Backpacker in the Max Lair, guaranteeing paths in Dynamax Adventures offered by Peonia that lead to a certain Legendary Pokémon, and progressing the narrative of the Crown Tundra at one point
Is this maybe all a bit too much? I admit that I do feel a bit overwhelmed at times, because I regularly use four of these five currencies. Dynite Ore especially feels contrived to me (and it doesn't help that the only two useful items you can buy with it are the exorbitantly overpriced Beast Ball and Ability Patch). I don't really see why Armorite Ore couldn't have served the same function. What do you think?

I think it went a bit overboard.

If I were a more suspicious man I'd suggest they decided post-release that Sw/Sh removed too much post-game competitive grinding and added the ores to pad it out more. :p
More realistically it feels like a way to force (maybe not the best word but I can't think of a better one) to engage with as many of the new side mechanics as possible to build a competitive team without tons of breeding. That's why there's five different types; if it was just BP for post-game items players would only need to engage with one activity to unlock everything.

I've never even liked Battle Points, to be honest. Let me buy that Thunder Wave TM at the Battle Frontier with my hard-earned cash, dammit! Grinding in battle facilities (which I've never enjoyed anyway) just to get an item I need isn't my idea of fun. The only time I've enjoyed spending Battle Points (or rather, Beach Points - I like what they did there) was in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where you can get them from Mantine Surf. Two trips on Mantine is usually enough to cover the cost of a Mega Stone.

And as for those ridiculous Watt requirements to get Honey's League Cards... seriously? Does anyone bother? I've actually stopped interacting with Dens to collect Watts - it's repetitive and disrupts the flow when I'd rather be exploring and enjoying the scenery.

Yeah, I was thinking this too. Like, Dynite Ore in particular feels designed to keep people going back to Dynamax Adventures even after all the Legendaries have been caught, because how else will you afford those Beast Balls and Ability Patches? Yes, you can also get Dynite Ore from regular Max Raids throughout the Tundra, but in much smaller amounts (one or two pieces per raid).

This sort of game design bothers me, even as a big fan of Dynamax Adventures - it's not like it benefits the developers to force people to keep engaging with a feature such as this after they've collected all of the major stuff that it has to offer. But even if it did, I still don't see why there had to be a new Ore designed for it - Armorite Ore isn't that much easier to farm than Dynite, especially not in the quantities that you need for the top prizes.

Needing Battle Points for TMs/Move Tutors is like, at the top of my list of reasons why I just can't get into HGSS so I feel ya' there lol. And yeah, Mantine Surf was an excellent alternative.

And as for those ridiculous Watt requirements to get Honey's League Cards... seriously? Does anyone bother? I've actually stopped interacting with Dens to collect Watts - it's repetitive and disrupts the flow when I'd rather be exploring and enjoying the scenery.

Admittedly, I bother. :p It's usually not too much of a problem for me, because I boil it down to a loop of "Do the daily Isle of Armor Max Raids to work on the Pokédex > Visit Watt Daddy once I have 7 or a multiple of 7 Ore > Get tons of Watts > Give to Honey > Go do the next round of Raids", but that really only works if you like doing Max Raids.

Still, at least the things Honey offers for those high amounts are frivolous. Once you've given her 400,000, you've gotten all the utility stuff. Compare that to needing to collect 1,000 flags just to get the Garchompite, or needing to win the Master Rank in all 5 Contests and defeat Lisia in a Contest for the Lucarionite in ORAS. League Cards are just fun collectibles, so I'm personally more okay with a couple of them being "lol I worked way too hard for this" gags.

I think that to some extent this is a legacy of the Game Corner, which likely existed because of Dragon Quest introducing the "casino that gives you special currency used for the best and rarest items" video game element.

Imagine how much worse it was for me, who hates Dynamax Adventures. :( CT ended up having way less to offer than IOA as a result 'cause I'm simply not going to grind those things for the Legendarys or the Ability Patches.

Watts and Battle Points could probably be fused in the future. I get that one is more about exploration and the other is more about competitive, but they fill similar niches when it comes to buying things. There should be definitely more ways to obtain watts related to everything in the Wild Area (raids, camping, using your bike), since you've still have to do lots of bike competitions and den interactions to obtain Wishing Stars, it's not hard but it isn't easy either. The DLC made the situation better, but not exactly "balanced" since it asks for impossible investments.

Dynite and Armorite should also be the same thing. I think they were made different from any currency to prevent players from hoarding them before the DLC launched and forcing them to test the new features. The things you can buy with them are probably worth their existence, but it's still weird, if you have faith in your features you shouldn't worry about people ignoring them.
