Do you think Goh's Grookey is the worst starter a main character has ever had in the anime?

Is Goh's Grookey the worst starter owned by a main character?

I have seen a lot of people on Twitter complaining about Grookey criticism, and defending it by saying Grookey hate is forced.

Like take this post for example and read the first comment

"Well no one complained about Togepi!" Or "Well it's meant to be a joke Pokemon!"

Well yeah that was different because Togepi was in the OS when the series was just finding its footing

This is Gen 8.

Also another problem with Grookey just being a joke Pokemon is that we all know that he is going to evolve eventually.

Because this show like to give Goh Evolutions without doing anything to earn it

This Monkey is going to evolve without using a single freaking Move in nearly 40 episodes!

While Togepi evolved, it wasn't until Misty was long off gone off the main cast and we don't know what they were up to off-screen

In regards to that post, Clemon't Chespin far surpasses that Grookey and I didn't even think Chespin was that bad. Yeah they forced him to be the cutesy gag Pokemon that people could find annoying, but he was adorable. He actually did stuff. Clemont did use him in battles and we did see Chespin come out to use Vine Whip to solve some problem on occasion. Plus, Chespin had some adorable interactions, such as his close frienemy relationship with Serena's Pancham or his crush on Serena's Sylveon.

Um are they sure Togepi wasn't disliked? The trope statements about ot didn't come from nowhere probably

Also, I think Togepi at least had the excuse of being a friendship-based evolution, so it was more about it's friendship with Misty than battling. And something else too: Togepi evolved into Togetic for a noble cause, because it grew up enough to the point where it defended people and Pokémon, and even become a guardian of that Togepi Kingdom.

Grookey has no excuse if it evolves cuz it's not friendship-based and it's literally the most useless Pokémon that has ever part of the main cast. It didn't worked at all to deserve one.

And of fucking course they are gonna evolve it because the ''heaven-sent golden child'' the writers are so in love with deserves to be spoiled with gifts he didn't moved a finger to earn.

Go may possibly be the most passive trainer we’ve ever seen yet is constantly rewarded for doing no work. It’s genuinely annoying.

Gou is a reflection of the lazy staff that created him, they also throw flowers at themselves sometimes, that's why he gets pampered and stuff despite not deserving anything.

That monkey's debut is still a heavily biased excuse of a plot, that failed in giving us any reason why the gremlin would be better belonging to Gou.
It was a sign of things to come.

We waited the longest for it and it has amounted to nothing. I’d say it’s Green Togepi but even Togepi was more useful than Grookey.
At least Togepi had sweet moments. The Houndoom episode was nice. Togepi was used in more creative scenarios to kickstart plots whereas with Groovey they resort to the same script: Grookey messes something up > anything but grookey faces consequences > episode plot

Adding in: Grookey hurts and abuses innocent Pokémon (that Drakloak scene hit SO weird) and faces no consequences, because we're supposed to find it funny as hell and love Grookey for it.

It still irritates me that Grookey abusing that innocent Falinks caused problems that Goh outright blamed Ash for rather than Grookey.
