Finally got around to seeing this episode.
Basically, while they were trying to prep the area for the test on the previous day, the crane operator dude accidentally opened a hole that revealed a cave that leads to the world of spirits. Nanakamado-Hakase then surmises that the Yonoir had appeared to accompany people to this spirit world.
Later, though, they figure out that it's actually there to protect people from being dragged into the spirit world.
