How come Steel Island is spelled in kanji? Bulbapedia has the name in hiragana... strange.

It's because the games spell EVERYTHING in Kana because of the limitations of the cartridge (well, the DS cartridge would probably include all the needed Kanji without any problem, but still, it would mean lots of unneeded extra work to Game Freak) but the anime does not have such limitations, so they can spell the name in Kanji. It's simple.
 
The title is "The Historic Ruins of Steel Island!"
