First off, welcome to Bulbagarden forums!
(a fellow Earthbound fan, it seems?)
Your story has an interesting premise of a slice of life about a family with a very unusual Pokémon as a pet--given as Christmas pet by a father who didn't ask his wife first (it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, as they say).
The writing style has something of a film-like quality to it; I can practically hear this narrator speaking over the scenes, which is an interesting idea. It has a very relaxing family-film vibe to it so far compared to a lot of fics.
I'm interested in seeing where it goes from here.
Really nice depiction of bonding between the Trainer and Pokemon, learning what to do and not to do to accommodate the Pokemon's needs. I liked the subtle incorporation of game mechanics in the Pokemon's biology (of course Druddigon would hate the cold - they're weak to the Ice-type!). Solid stuff.
I'm not that up on gen 5 but I'm assuming the unnamed Opelucid City Gym leader was Iris?
Still it's interesting to see the Doe kids gym challenges fit pretty well with how NPCs in the first game talk (you meet one pretty late in the game mentioning they never won a Gym battle). Stories where the protagonist doesn't become champion are pretty common; less common where they don't even get eight badges, but it fits well with the stories focus of a fairly normal family.
I feel like most stories just have Pokémon lose their carnivorous instincts the instance they end up with humans (except a joke in the old Electric Tale of Pikachu manga where we see a captured Pidgeotto and Fearow hungrily eyeing their nervous Caterpie partner) so that scene with the poor Tranquill caught me off guard.
I had a bit of trouble parsing this sentence. Is it "but that color aside"? "That one color aside"?One that color aside
:copyka:“Remember kids, if you’re going out for Halloween, everyone needs to have fun with it,” Mr. Doe reminded. “Make sure you’re not putting your Pokémon up to anything they won’t enjoy.”
I think there's a stray space before "You"?“... You
SAME, Neela. The Druddigon wondered to herself briefly why humans would be so unfazed by hanging out the bones of their own kind
This is a silly thing, but I started feeling a little emotional at this. Like poor little Litwick. Yes, they drain life force, but they're babeyThe Dragon-type flashed her fangs and bellowed with all of her might, when the light in the skeleton abruptly went dark and a creature fell out crying out in fright.
“W-Wick! Litwick!”
Hello there! Here for Catnip (and the Halloween contest, if you see this on Bulba)! Gonna be honest and say that Halloween is one of my least favorite holidays, but even still, I have a few fond memories of it (remembering the time I dressed up as the periodic table), and this little oneshot really helped to remember and treasure those memories. (Yes I'm getting really sappy okay this fic just brings out the sappiest parts of me). You really captured the joy of the holiday in this one! It was a really fun romp, and it's nice to read a fic with lower stakes every once in a while, stories about the day-to-day lives of an average Pokémon or Poképerson. Little details like the Gym being a center of festivities and Brycen dressing up as Brycen-Man really stood out to me, as did the scared little Axew and the mischievous little Litwick. They helped to celebrate the simple joys of Halloween in a way that's uniquely Pokémon!

But yeah, I had fun with this one. Hope to get around to finishing the main story some day. Happy belated Halloween, and keep up the good work!
