Fanservice and Ecchi: Too much?

Yeah, I'm sure we've all noticed this. So let's discuss.

I think there's too much and even if there are a lot of shows that are plot oriented, the ecchi stuff garners more attention because... well, you know. That and if there's a potentially good plot, they should focus on that and NOT on trying to break the immersion with stuff to get me all hot and bothered.

I don't have a problem at all with execcesive fan service as long as it doesn't affect the plot.
There are entire shows built almost entirely on fan service and I really don't have a problem with that either.

It depends on the context, I guess. I don't want my super dark grim supernatural mystery being bombarded with forced fanservice if it has no bearing on anything but I don't mind if my eye candy swimming show lingers on fanservicey shots often.

I'm making no sense, probably.

Call me biased or such, but I don't mind excessive fan-service of male characters. Personally, it makes the show all the more likable. In the case of Free! - it's a sports anime about swimming! Of course the characters would be wearing swim-suits. While I do like watching their muscular bodies and pretty faces, it's not so much that hinders the flow of the plot.

Fanservice in itself is inevitable. Even an anime that's heavily plot-based like Death Note has its share of fanservice (see: Amane Misa)

It works for some shows, it doesn't work for others (Guilty Crown comes to mind).

Personally, I have no problems with fanservice when that's the main hook for watching it. *goes back to watching Highschool DXD*

I have no problem with fanservice whatsoever. I mean, if I was watching something with an extremely amazing plot and whatnot with some ecchi/fanservice thrown in, I'd have no problem with that. Some anime it doesn't work so well in, of course, but with some, I've found it helps. Some scenes that include fanservice can help build the plot, in my opinion.

Of course, I don't mind shows built entirely around fanservice, either. Like, if the show is rated ecchi, then it's going to have fanservice. Don't watch it if you don't like it. Plus I'm a total pervert, so, sometimes it's nice... <w<

Too much indeed. There are series that are complete fan service like Kampfer, P&SwG, He is my master... A little bit is ok. A little too much is not. It's ok when, for example, in a Shounen you see a scene where an accident happen and each character react in a funny way. You don't see anything, and hey! It's funny, or even cute. And its maybe one scene every 20 or 30 episodes.

But it's not ok when it turns the series into an R-18, or if every episode is sex, specially when you realize that watching that could make you a pedophile (How old are all those characters? Because in "He is my master", for example, all of them are 12, or in Dokuro-chan, where the "chan" suffix is self explanatory). There are already a lot of hentai on the internet, we don't need any more in our animations.

I love my fanservice! Eheh. Though honestly it really depends on the context of the show overall. Like Highschool of the Dead I absolutely hated that one and the fanservice was just weird really.

But what I hate the most when it comes to fanservice is when an anime actually has more content than just fanservice and is advertised as other wise, like Sekirei.

But really I'm fine with fanservice.

I don't really have a problem with fanservice, in fact I've gotten quite used to it. Of course I do have some rules for it, I like fanservice more when it's done for comedy or when it's done in a kind of realistic setting. For example, a character gets their clothes torn, of course the reason for this has to be proper to not like Ikki Tousen where the character's clothes are blown apart by the touch. But there are a lot of anime that use fanservice as a source for comedy from time to time there are others that do fanservice in serious moments but rather than it being obvious is more like accidentally on purpose, like the view just happens to be there.

Of course there are anime that overdo it, like To Love Ru/Darkness which just kind turn everything into fanservice.

Fanservice is an art. Anything that seems forced, over the top, or drawn out is distracting. This includes stupid sound effects (like bouncing) and equally stupid exaggerated camera zoom. If it's distracting, then it is taking away from other elements, e.g. the plot. There comes a point where you need to stop kidding yourself and just go watch some porn, you know?

However, if you want to throw in an unassuming panty shot, chest shot, or any fanservice that isn't so blatantly annoying it makes me completely forget what the characters were actually doing in the first place, then I will welcome and enjoy it.

I don't necessarily love or hate cliches like beach episodes, protag catching the girl coming out of the bath/changing, tripping and landing on breasts, etc. Rather, I've learned to live with them and at least try to enjoy it (despite the little comedic value being horribly recycled) because they certainly aren't going anywhere. Sometimes I wish they would go away though. :<

For instance, Sebastian Michaelis from Black Butler...

His existence is fanservice. We all love it when he says "Bocchan" (Young Master), and that dazzling smirk... mwehehehehe :evil:

I like Kuroshitsuji, Sebastian too, but I don't favor him. Yup, he is fan service and having gone to a REAL butler cafe and how it was interesting how they were...wait where was I going with this...oh yeah good looking butlers. *_* lol

That aside, I can tolerate fan service if it doesn't interfere with the plot or if it isn't overbearing, like Najica Blitz Tactics, for example. Kuroshitsuji fan service is tolerable because the characters are handsome, not unnecessary nudity or panty shots. >_>

Exactly. Like I mentioned, unless it is the yaoi genre, there's almost no explicit fanservice scenes of male characters - almost nothing sexually expressive. The fanservice are almost always limited to highlighting the male characters' good looks and sweet characteristics - just like how everything Sebastian does is just pure precious and make us wish that if we could ever get Sebby as our personal butler, we'd sell a thousand souls for contract...///////////// (okay, I got carried away...)

Ecchi scenes of male characters are pretty rare - even in the shounen-ai genre. Maybe it's because anything that IS sexually expressive, in fact, involves sex scenes and would be rated adult material in the first place anyways.


If anyone remembers the anime K, the fanservice of guys and girls are clearly different. If you know the characters, compare Neko's fanservice to the other guys, and you'll see what I mean.

Apparently when it's fanservice for girls, those two things aren't enough.

One issue fanservice can pose is to outsiders of the Anime fandom(s) who can stereotype Anime as just porn. Because lord knows that humans are lazy at being open minded. You know that moments where you're watching an Anime and something risqué is shown, making you looking around for any family members/roommates. God forbid, you pause at the wrong moment...

On the whole, I don't mind fanservice as I know its part of the Anime art and culture but if it gets to the point of being all "In your face" and too excessive in a way that it spoils the story or the show for that matter, then I'll turn off. I know that there are certain anime's that are aimed at that specific area and those are the anime's that I'll tend to stay away from. I like the kind of fanservice that involve the return of old characters in longer running shows like Pokemon as long as they've got a valid reason to return though unfortunately in BW Dawn & Charizard have just been there for the sake of just being there.

Zombie Kore Wa Desu was awful - at least the episodes I encountered(my friend showed me a couple episodes of it) - I don't know what was happening in the anime, but the amount of ecchi/fanservice in it and the way it was handled was just...not good. Anyways, I don't mind a little bit of ecchi/fanservice as long as it doesn't take over the whole anime itself. I just find it uh, frustrating, I guess so I'd rather just watch hentai if there's going to be an overwhelming amount of ecchi in an anime.

You know, one good form of Fanservice is when you actually like the character (male or female) being sexualized. Like Cutey Honey who's a fun female heroine and can kick ass clothes or none. She's not just a talking pair of boobs.

For me, it's entirely a matter of the show. If a show is an outright fanservice/ecchi show, I don't mind it at all (like HighSchool DxD New which I am watching at the moment). If however, it's part of a larger show (such as Fairy Tail) and starts to detract from the story, then excessive amounts can start to annoy me.

Basically, I go to the fanservice stuff for my fanservice and I go for other stuff for other stuff.

The anime series I watch are almost entirely plot-driven ones. I tend to watch a lot of series intended for younger children since they don't have fanservice. Hamtaro, for example, is devoid of it.

Seriously, it doesn't take a genius to see the producers thinking, "Hmmm, somehow I don't think such a 'dull show' is gonna sell. I GOT IT! Huge boobs solves everything!"
