"Come on, Glam ! We gotta get a Combee for Mommy before the rain gets too rainy !", a young Romy says to her Glameow, running towards the gateway to Route 215 with heavy steps as her tiny yellow raincoat gets soaked and weighs her down. The Pokémon hates the rain, but accompanies her trainer anyway. As they reach the lone honey tree, the pair sees a Munchlax sticking out of the tree, eating the honey that had been splattered there. "Hey you ! Get off this tree !", Romy says out loud. Munchlax glances at her and Glameow, then goes back to eating. The little girl grunts. "Glam, use Fake Out to scare him away !", Romy orders, which Glameow obliges. It succeeds in knocking down Munchlax, but it only makes it angry as it faces the pair.

"You won't stand a chance, honey muncher ! Glam, use Hypnosis !", Romy shouts. Glameow spins its tail in a hypnotic manner, but Munchlax is too focused on the little girl to observe her Pokémon's move. It tries to tackle Romy, but Glameow jumps in the way and does its best to block the charge. "Glam !", the girl shouts. The cat Pokémon gets knocked away, only to notice that Munchlax is waggling its finger. Thinking it is taunting her, Romy advances towards the Big Eater Pokémon, trying to scare it away herself. The little girl's grumpy expression turns to shock as sand starts rising from the grass, trapping and hurting her in the process. "What is this !?", Romy shouts with slight fear in her voice. Munchlax pumps itself up, then waggles its finger again. Romy now realises what's happening. "It's using Metronome like a Clefairy...", she thinks. Her worried look turns to terror as Munchlax starts glowing.

Glameow slowly gets up after recovering from the earlier tackle, and sees Romy trapped in a small sandstorm as Munchlax is glowing. Glameow senses what's about to happen and has a terrified look on its face. It wants to protect Romy at all costs, but the Pokémon has trouble walking for a bit. It eventually reaches them, but Munchlax keeps on glowing, to the point where the rain starts to avoid it. It opens its mouth and shouts a beam of light. Instinctively, Glameow jumps in-between them, attempting to resist the attack. "Glam, no !", Romy says, worried about the safety of her Pokémon. During the struggle, Glameow starts pushing back with great difficulty. As its strength about to give out, Glameow is looking desperate. It begins to glow as well. Romy's eyes widen, wondering what's happening. Eventually, the light-coated Pokémon pushes back Munchlax's beam, and gets in close enough range to swipe its paw at the Big Eater Pokémon, breaking the latter's concentration and cancelling the beam.

As Romy and Munchlax look on, the light starts morphing in front of them. Eventually, Glameow stops glowing, but its shape has changed : its ears shape themselves into a crescent moon form, its tail coils around its body like a corset, and its facial expression changes from a sly smile into a begrudging one. Glameow had evolved into Purugly. It begins staring down at the Big Eater Pokémon with a scary face, making the latter run away into the woods. As the sand dissipates, Romy carefully approaches the evolved Pokémon. "Glam... Is that you ?", she whispers hesitantly. Purugly turns around slowly, meows softly before collapsing to the ground in great pain. Romy starts panicking, not knowing what to do. With tears in her eyes, she darts her eyes around the area and spots a Black Belt approaching her in a hurry.

"What happened, little one ? I heard cries of help and saw light coming from here !", he says as he hands out a Potion to Romy. She sprays the item on Purugly, but it only helps slightly as her Pokémon opens its eyes again but doesn't get up. The Black Belt gets worried as well. "Something isn't right. Your Pokémon must have evolved to protect you... But Puruglies are usually much wider than that, yet it is the same size as its previous form... That's not good. Come on, we have to bring it to the Pokémon Center quickly", he says, helping Romy carry Purugly to safety.

Later at the Veilstone Pokémon Center, Romy is awaiting the results with her parents. Eventually, a nurse comes to them and tells them what happened : Glameow forced itself to evolve early to protect its trainer. In doing so, it caused the Pokémon's metabolism to be thrown out of whack. Seeing Romy holding back her tears, the nurse reassures her that it is not permanent, but great care must be taken to ensure the Pokémon's eventual recovery and it will take a long time. The little girl nods slowly without saying a word. Later in the evening, Romy brings Purugly's Poké Ball to her bedroom, silently crying all the while. "I'm so sorry, Glam...", she whispers. The little girl stares at the Poké Ball for a short while before drying her tears. "I promise you I'll become stronger and better so I can protect you too, Glam", she vows as her voice cracks a bit. As Romy is about to fall asleep, Purugly comes out of its Poké Ball and slowly curls up in the bed, reassuring the little girl that it doesn't hate her.
