The golden age of the GBA. Emerald is awesome beyond your mind! I can't believe you people don't know the awesomeness that is the GBA. It's like the awesomeness of the NES. Grasp the power...
The DS games have an overall better story IMO, but Hoenn is so prettyyyyy.......overall though having the mainstream pokemon games in semi 3d was fun and the stories felt more complex.
I prefer the DS games, mainly for the physical/special split, the addition of cross-gen evolutions like Togekiss, Weavile, and Roserade, as well as the new attacks like Close Combat, Brave Bird, Iron Head, Draco Meteor, Stone Edge, and X-Scissor.
This thread may've been focused on the main series (which already means 1 set of original games: RSE, versus 2 or arguably 3: DPPt / BW / B2W2), but we can't ignore we got the entire Ranger series, Explorers of Sky and Pokémon Conquest on Nintendo DS. GBA did have Pinball but there's no contest here.
The NDS games do it for me, and for pretty obvious reasons. The Generation 4 and 5 games are better game-play wise and aesthetically than their GBA counterparts. Of particular, the physical-special split by the advent of the NDS era, pretty much make playing the GBA games a bit cumbersome for me.
That is not to say, I don't like the GBA games. Of course, leaving the battle mechanics and Pokémon movepools aside, they are very well done, and I absolutely love playing them whenever I do.
not hating on the gba games, i've had tons of fun playing rse, but i've had more positive memories playing dpp, spinoff games like pokemon mystery dungeon, hgss, etc. lots to like about the nds pokemon games!
The DS games, easily. I did not much care for a lot of aspects of Ruby. FireRed I thought was a solid remake, but it isn't enough to make up for how disappointing Gen III was for me overall. Gen IV was a "return to form" for me, and I really liked Diamond. HG/SS are great G/S remakes, too.
EDIT: Totally forgot for some bizarre reason (probably because I played them only after I got a 3DS... long story) that Gen V was on the DS. B/W are my top favorite Pokemon games. So that puts the DS way ahead in this category.
The DS games, gen IV is my top favorite generation within the games and gen V isn't too far behind either. I also get way more replay value and enjoyment out of Platinum, HGSS, and BW/2 than I do with RSE and FRLG (they're fine, just not ones I'd likely go back to nowadays).
DS for sure. While I loved Hoenn, I'd say HGSS and Black and White are the ones I prefer for main series games. When it comes to spinoffs I also think the DS had the best ones overall with Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Conquest.
Even though I started with Sapphire and love Hoenn a bit too much, DS era was what I personally considered the peak of Pokemon gaming, especially Black/White 2. Don't get me wrong I like pretty much everything except XY (it was good early on then got very lackluster) in Gens 3-7, but BW2 was that peak in the middle I think.
