Speculation Gen 9 Predictions (Development predictions, New Regions, Version names)

Pokemon Balance
Pokemon Harmony

Usually they pick titles that are antonyms, not synonyms. They seem to like concepts that are complementary or equally opposing, especially with recent titles (a bit harder to see that for some of the colors and gems, but Black/White, X/Y, Alpha/Omega, Sun/Moon, and Sword/Shield are pretty clearly opposites). Balance and Harmony don't really offer that kind of contrast, they mean largely the same thing.

I only know what "Apex" means because I’m pursuing a botany degree… I doubt young kids are familiar about Undergraduate Botany vocabulary… Not to mention for most kids "Nadir" is just a random name.

Apex and Nadir specifically are astronomical terms, but they can also be used to refer to literary arcs.

I know Apex from the term "apex predator"... but yeah, Apex and Nadir aren't names for pokemon games. Pokemon uses words that are very elementary, like something a six year old would know and recognize. And I don't believe the reason for that is rooted in the games being meant for children, it's moreso that they use English words for the titles despite originating in Japanese-- it's English words that the developers know. So they're names that are going to be recognizable for a foreign-speaking audience. Therefor, very unlikely that they would use obscure upper-level words like Apex and Nadir.

I think we'd have better luck finding the next games' names in a first grade vocabulary list.

I don't know if Apex can be reduced to an astronomical term. As far as I understand, it's a Latin term which initially denoted a piece of religious attire of Roman priests, which was later used figuratively to denote "the highest point", and which more later also came to take on an astronomical meaning.

What I mean to say is that Apex probably holds correlation with word similes in all languages of Latin origin, like Ápice (in Portuguese). So it would not be uncommon for western audiences to understand such an expression, so much so that there is a popular game called Apex Legends.

In the case of Nadir, which seems to have Arabic or Hebrew origins, and is used only as an astronomical meaning in the Western world, its understanding would certainly be complicated.

@Maniacal Engineer does it really? You're fluent

After realizing what Nadir means, it does seem that it would be tricky, but in a Game Informer article a little ways back, they mentioned something about GF wanting their names to be fluent in multiple languages. So I dunno

Pretty sure they mean very basic words like Sun and Moon and Sword and Shield, that are easily understood and recognized. Definitely not something that even a native English speaker wouldn't recognize, like Nadir.

Hebrew, no. The closest words we have in Hebrew are נדר (Neder), which means “vow,” and נזיר (Nazir), which refers to someone who has taken a vow to be a Nazarite.
Neither of those are even close to the astronomical term “nadir.”

I think there is a word in Arabic that’s similar to nadir, but I’m not fluent in Arabic.

Hear me out: Pokémon Corn and Wheat

It checks all of the boxes: Ideas/Things that are opposite, easy to translate into another language, and capable of a remake (Golden Wheat and Pale Corn)
What would be the legendries for those games be though? Crops? Farmers? What's the lore behind them?

Okay, now I'm just imagining the box mascots as literally just two competing farmers. I mean, if the starters keep getting more humanoid with each new region, might as well have the legends follow suit! XD

Yes. Farmers made of the aforementioned plant for each game. The 3rd Legendary to complete the trio is a rich capitalist. Starters are a tractor, bull, and weed. Main plot is how there’s an evil team (though I suppose they would be good) trying to make a super-crop, requiring them to capture the legendaries.

Speaking as an Arab, the first thing I thought when I saw that word was the name...which was very confusing for me because it doesn't really mean the same thing in Arabic lol

If we're floating around potential names/themes here are my suggestions (although I think they'd be better for certain circumstances that will probably happen in later generations and not 9th gen):

Past and Future
Fantasy and Reality (I really want them to save that for a potential VR title in the future, the theming is just too perfect)
One and All (good theme for a Russian region if we ever get one, could make a good kid-friendly take on Russia's communist history and the debate surrounding capitalism vs. socialism)
Myth and Fact

And yes, I like @Timaeus' suggestion of Order and Chaos too.

Well, any suggestions as to what could be used to follow the "highest and lowest" theme naming I suggested? One word, too. Pokemon Sky High and Pokemon Rock Bottom don't necessarily sound like something GF and Nintendo would do.

It's not a celestial theme, it's actually a psychological one. Apex version's legendary represented alienation by virtue of success, whilst Nadir's represents demonization by way of prominent failure. The games have this obsession with the ancient Greek concept of "hamartia", which literally means to miss in archery, but colloquially means sin. On one hand, we have a paragon of virtue that cannot connect to anything around it because it is so perfect, and on the other we have an embodiment of vice that seethes with hate for all who rejected it for it's imperfections. The game even have a karma system a lot like dishonored (though it only increases with special actions and dialogue) and it's main themes are about choice in the face of mortality and chaos.
