I think they are both coincidences, honestly.

I think they are both coincidences, honestly.

I definitely think the Helmasaur one is just a coincidence especially since Shushupu seems to draw more heavily in concept with plague doctors. With upside down squids....yeah it could be a coincidence but that's why I'm wondering if there's a Japanese story or myth about upside down squids that inspired both designs.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I like the dark/psychic combination. Even if it's a squid, we already have Tentacool/cruel that are squids with the Water/Poison typing, and Frillish/Jellicent with the Ghost/Water, I'm glad they went with something different for these guys.

Tentacool and Frillish families are jellyfishes, not squids. Both animal species are as different as a bee to a bird.

About their typing, we had already non-Water Pokémon based after acuatic animals, specificaly in Gen V. Stunfisk, Tynamo family.

I guess since a Pokémon can't have three types, sometimes GF is forced to choose the two more important for what's intended. So, we have Beedrill and Venomoth (Bug/Poison), Volcarona (Bug/Fire), and Genesect (Bug/Steel), all of them based after flying bugs, but don't have Flying type, because their respective secondary type was important for their design and description. On the other hand we have Flygon, a flying dragonfly described as the spirit of the desert. Bug, Flying, Dragon and Ground, 4 types in a single Pokémon, buth we have to choose two. GF went for Ground/Dragon, despite Flygon learns Fly and is in the Bug egg group.

So, Stunfisk is not Water because Ground and Electric were priority. Tynamo is a special case, because it hasn't a secondary type, but I guess GF wanted the novelty of a Pokémon with no weaknesses while avoiding another Dark/Ghost combination.

If Maaiika/Calamanero aren't Water-typed, is just because GF considered more important for them to be Dark an Psychic than Water.

For the record, "Calamar" is Spanish for squid.

Tentacruel is based off a jellyfish, but there's obvious some squid thrown in there as well, specifically its beak-like nose.

Personally I always saw Tentacool as being inspired by DBZ aliens, he's got the shoulder pads and his eyes remind me of Gurd from the Ginyu Force.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I really like most of the New Pokemon conceptually and look forward to seeing them in the show and such, but I honestly can't say any have struck me as being ones that I'd necessarily use on a team. But that'll change once we see evolutions and such.

Is anyone else bothered by Inkay being Dark/Psychic? It works for Malimar, but...it just doesn't fit Inkay in any way, really. I can kinda see Psychic, but it's not Dark whatsoever. I think Inkay should've been pure-Psychic.

I personally don't really see Dark in either one of them, and I think it's a bit of an awkward type combo. Sort of off topic: Makes me wish even more that Gothitelle would've ended up as Dark/Psychic as many thought it would.

They are Dark because Dark represent unconventional way of thinking or doing things, hence the upside down and the Contrary ability and the move.

I thought that the whole Gothitelle Family should have been Psychic/Dark in my opinion. After looking into the whole family for quite some time I saw that the one with the most affinity to the Dark Typing was Gothorita just by looking at one of its Dex entries that says "They use hypnosis to control people and Pokémon. Tales of Gothorita leading people astray are told in every corner."

Maybe they could give Gothorita a split evolution where it would actually go down that dark path and have the Psychic/Dark Typing. My only worries are that the Gothitelle and Reuniclus Families are version exclusives so Duosion might need one as well in that case maybe a Psychic/Electric split evolution for Duosion which to me sounds pretty cool.

What do you think?

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

Alright, my opinion on the new Pokémon:

- Goronda looks amazing and I love its design, pretty much as cool as Pancham. I bet the new evolution method is the one involving another dark type so Pancham can evolve only in its presence.
- Maika/Karamanero certainly have strange designs but unique typing. They're okay, I guess.
- Shushupu looks adorable, though why isn't it also Flying type? It looks like a small bird. XD
- Peropuff is so adorable, omg. I can't handle this much sweetness. :p

All these fairy types are cute and fluffy, sans Xenreas, but what I would really like is a different kind of fairy, something mischievous, something darker. I hope we get something like that soon enough. Overall, I'm content with these designs - imo, XY has yet to fail me.

The reason Gothithelle family looks that way could be due to the reference of how psychics in real life tense to be unhappy because they either see things other can't see, things they don't want to see, horrible futures, and sometimes being isolated by people. It could also be reference to the Japanese version of a school witch, which is a really smart girl who is always doing things herself inside a room in school like reading books, doing occult stuffs, and wear goth-loli. It's quite a popular trope that many manga and visual novel use, a dark-emo, smart girl who has few to no friend.

Just checked tvtropes, apparently Peropuff is a fairy type because the Australian term for cotton candy is fairy floss. Fairies don't have to be dark but still dangerous. They can look cutes but be dangerous, that's more fairy. One of the traditional fairy ability is glamour, which alter the perception of the lookers.

I tend to think of it like this. Dangerous looking are not very dangerous because other will run away from those things and make them less dangerous. Innocent looking but in fact really dangerous is more dangerous because they are unsuspecting. This, to me, suit fairy more.

Alright then, I hope we get some creepy dex entries to make sure some of those fairies are kinda dangerous.

I mean, there are plenty of such dex entries so I hope we get some for these Pokémon. :D

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I heard there was a pun in Inkay's Japanese name, Maika. Something like "Maa ii ka" means "well, whatever" and ika means squid.

It seems that Gorondo is one of those high school punks with heart-of-gold according to the info it came with.

I'm cool with the legendaries' revealed types. I still can't decided who I like more. Taking into consideration the new info we got about it I'm guess that Yveltal is like the grim reaper of Kalos or something.

Cotton candy puppy is cool. I bet it evolves into a St. Bernard or a Poodle. Really any excessively fluffy dog will do. I hear those Australians are facepalming at the pun in it's design.

From yesterday's leaks my utmost favorite Pokemon revealed is Shushup. There is literally nothing in existence that is cuter than this little guy! I'm all up for Doctor Flamingo, teaming up with Nurse Joy and ailing the wretchedly sick:
icVlOeq.jpg
Apparently Shushup is the third smallest Pokemon, right behind Flabebe and Joltik:
fS20Dkj.jpg
(Though not this small to be honest.)

Between Skrelp and plague-doctor bird, clearly Y is the superior option.

God there are just so many awesome Pokemon this generation! Gamefreak better accommodate this by increasing the party size. 40 sounds like a reasonable party size for this gen.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I don't have anything against the legendary, except that their 3d look in the trailer was a big turn off for me, especially Xerneas until I saw the profile look in Sugimori's art, which can only be described by one word, "majesty". Most people thought Xerneas was part steel because its color scheme was similar to Dialga, part grass because it's standing in the forest, but fairy monotype to me was the best. All this and I'm still getting Pokemon Y instead of X.

Now looking back at Yveltal's design, I can see the destruction. The lines on its underside are the cracks of the earth. Red the color of flame and blood. Its neck feathers is the smoke from a ruin after a raid while Xerneas' horns look like the phylogenetic tree.

Oh my God, you are so right. A Pink fluffy, cotton candy poodle dog with that fancy poodle cut? GENIUS. UTTER BRILLIANCE. Assuming this happens, it will no longer be me least liked pokemon so far.

Pangoro is brilliant. Hopefully owned by the Dark leader that is dancer Zachary.
Inkay and Malimar are just beautiful. If Malimar isn't owned by Zachary then it'll be owned by an Elite Four member.
Shushup and Peropuff... Perfume bird and a candy floss poodle! I love them <3

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I'm loving so many of the new reveals. There really hasn't been anything disapointing at all so far in this gen. I really feel like gamefreak has gone above and beyond to try to knock our socks off. I have never been a fan (at least at first) of brand new pokemon. I remember being so dissapointed when I found out that all I could catch in Unova was pokemon from the new gen. I don't feel that way at all this time around. IMO these new pokemon designs are already blowing gen 5 out of the water.

Here is what I am thinking for my team so far, although I am really torn because I like so many. I agree with the thought that they should increase party size, but realize that's not going to happen.

1. Fennekin > Evolution
2. Fletchling > Talonflame (to be replaced by Yveltal once obtained)
3. Panchem > Pangoro
4. Helioptile > Evolution
5. Squirtle > Blastoise Yes, this is happening. ;)
6. Sylveon (Gotta have a dragon killer, may replace with new Mewtwo form if the phycic/fairy typing is true)

Professor *q*

Also, Flare looks significantly less dorky in their 3D models.

And Swirlix (that's the cotton candy one?) Looks better with feet.
