Re: The "Real or Not Real" Thread

they hyped up every pokemons type when it isn't revealed, that doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be a new type.

I was referring to all the fan hype, including #fairygate. But actually, as Silktree said, there has been hype regarding Sylveon's typing. They're deliberately playing it up more than Zekrom and Reshiram ever were...why, if not to reveal a new type?

Of course the less interesting answer is that Gamefreak are massive trolls, but I'm at least cautiously optimistic now.

Yosei actually just means fairy, it's essentially the same, as already pointed out in another thread. Actually, how did I not realize that before...

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

I wouldn't like Magic as a type as it would be ill-defined. Sylveon might have magical powers, but they should have a discernible source. That is why I'm currently favoring the Astral type theory. I don't think that the stars in the background are just there to be pretty, especially as Sylveon's move ends up bursting into the sky like fireworks.

Astral wouldn't be associated just with extraterrestial Pokémon. Earthly Pokémon can also draw their powers from their stars, as demonstrated by Gothorita and Gothitelle (the latter is classified as the Astral Body species). Astral projection pertains to the ability to leave one's body and observe not only the stars, but also supernatural realms (the afterlife). If Astral were a type, I think it would be given to the Clefairy line, Staryu line, Solrock, Lunatone, Jirachi, Cresselia, Gothorita and Gothitelle. Note that neither Deoxys nor the Elgyem line have anything to do with stars. Astral should replace Psychic for the Staryu line and Jirachi, but I feel uneasy about Lunatone and Solrock since they're Tate and Liza's signature Pokémon (even though their primary type is Rock); perhaps only their potential evolutions should be affected.

Swift, Morning Sun, Moonlight, Wish, Meteor Mash, Cosmic Power, Lunar Dance and Gravity would presumably be retyped. The funny thing is that the number of aforementioned retcons is perfectly reasonable, and yet it would already go a long way to make Astral sizeable relative to Ghost and Dragon. As of Generation V, Ghost has 27 Pokémon and 16 moves, while Dragon has 29 Pokémon and 13 moves. Astral could easily have around 22 Pokémon and 16 moves in just its debut.

Don't want to bring up the dreaded re-make discussion, but its possible that their Gym would either be retconned (in a remake) or simply changed in a future game that revisited Tate/Liza's gym. I'm not sure about it being called "astral" though, but at least that sounds better than simply "space." Isn't it all the same as cosmic energy or aether? The latter is often used in a lot of Greek myths to mean the energy of the stars as well.

It enveloped the mountain peaks, clouds, stars, sun and moon. The stars themselves were said to be formed from the concentrated fires of aither.

I would also wonder how Xerneas/Yveltal would get something like astral, but I'll wait to find out more about them first. Its also possible that only Sylveon gets a new typing while they in fact do not, which was the case back in Gen 2 with Ho-oh, Lugia, and Umbreon, as well as the Steel typing.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

Anyone got an explanation for all that glowing it did in the trailer?? I thought sites would explode with discussion after that but it seems like everyone just kinda ignored it?? Since when does flying type mean "mystic magical glowwy-ness" ... this is the most concrete evidence we have that it wont be normal or flying but perhaps DRAGONNN!!! I also really want a new type cause i want another type besides steel to resist dragon, but in that case all bets are off for speculation.

I honestly don't mind a massive retcon of pokes like togekiss and jirachi and celebi and chansey etc for this new/light/fairy/mystic/celestic/love-type. I mean it just wouldn't make sense for them not too change. And in gen 4 i never would have thought this would happen, but after rotom (one of the most competitevly used pokemon) got 5 type changes anything can happen. how many people would REALLY notice if 20 or so pokes change types especially if you couldnt encounter them before the league (so the five year olds arent confused when brick break doesnt necessarily KO clefairy anymore)

I don't think a new type (if it happens) should be limited to after the E4. A new type should be introduced fairly early, so that players can enjoy playing with and learning how to effectively use it. There's always tutorials (such as the Pokemon school, which usually shows up by the first or second gym) for people who might not use the internet or player guides. And most five year olds aren't experienced enough with the franchise to find the change in effective moves to be incredibly jolting. The group most likely to struggle with the typing shakeup would probably be competitive players; giving them the typing early would allow them to learn the new mechanics.

Idk if this is true, but I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo will have VERY LITTLE to no importance at this year's E4, and that nothing is expected for Pokemon. But i could be mistaken...

AND I really think that our metagame needs some desperate revisions. The wifi and official metagame is essentially a game of Steel, Dragon, Rain and its making the whole thing extremely bland and boring. Only places that have banned Ubers like Thundurus and Rain teams are any fun, and since these metagames are not Nintendo's or in their control I think they want to make their own more fair. A new type that resists the most common offensive types (dragon fighting) and that are weak to others like grass and poison that need a boost could round it out more and make play more strategy based than "who can use a copy-paste moveset first" . just my humble opinion though

I want to one day see sylveon tank a garchomp's outrage and counter with FAIRY BLAST !!!

By E4, I meant the Elite Four, not the gaming convention/expo.

No, but it would be a bit odd if, after hiding Sylveon's type (and the new legendaries') for several months and constantly asking 'what is it what is it what is it?' GF turn around and say loljks its just Normal. In a couple of days, we will have known about Sylveon for 3 months, and it's been just over 4 months since the announcement of X&Y (and therefore Xerneas and Yveltal's reveal). They gave us the types of the 3 starters pretty quick (all with dropping possible hints about potential secondary types for their evolutions, who knows), so why hold out for soooo long for the rest of them?

If they had just come out with 'This is Sylveon, the new eeveelution.' and not made any fuss at all about its possible typing, then I wouldn't expect there to be anything interesting about it. I think everyone would be in agreement with it being normal along with all the other cream/pink whimsical normal types. However, they are taking very deliberate actions to hide and confuse its type, such as:

- never before used colour to represent Sylveon
- change of psychic's colour to purple, instead of the slightly pinker colour we've had for previous gens.
- vague symbols that currently represent no existing type
- weird-ass acid trip abilities
- revealed on Valentines Day (might be coincidence, doubt it)
- whole bunch of other stuff I'm too lazy to type out

I personally don't think they would go to so much effort for it to basically nothing interesting.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they went for so far to hide it only for it to be an existing type. They have a lot of time to hype up the games and keeping a lot of information, including Sylveon's type, to keep the fanbase speculating on it only for the reveal to be nothing groundbreaking sounds exactly like something Game Freak would do. That's not to say that it isn't possible that Sylveon couldn't be a new type. I'm not really buying it myself, but I can see why others would come to that conclusion. I just wouldn't be surprised if after all of the long months of speculation, Sylveon's type isn't new.

I do not see how it would be odd for it to just be an existing type. I think it could still make perfect sense to keep it a secret

Re: The "Real or Not Real" Thread

Pink, as well as purple, have also represented the poison type as well. And in some cases, ghost type too. Several typings have shared common colors before, it really doesn't mean anything. Sylveon's primary color is pink, that's why they chose it.

Also, Eevee was represented by the color brown instead of white. Eevee's primary color is brown. Does this make Eevee rock or ground typed now? No, it doesn't. Colors don't necessarily mean a thing.

We dont know for a fact that there will be new Pokemon revealed or even what we will get, though a few new Pokemon certainly would be nice to see.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

alright guys, according to this ポケモンスマッシュ! | ポケットモンスターオフィシャルサイト
sylveon info will be coming on May 12th, and on May 19th, masuda will be giving us some more info on X and Y (presumably new pokemon)

I'm hoping against hope that they're going to reveal the entire dex!
meh highly doubtful. the only reason that happened before, was because Melkor leaked the gen V dex they never actually released it

I'm not sure about it being called "astral" though, but at least that sounds better than simply "space." Isn't it all the same as cosmic energy or aether? The latter is often used in a lot of Greek myths to mean the energy of the stars as well.
The undelying element is aether, which medieval alchemists described as the substance filling the region of the universe above the terrestrial sphere. They proposed that a little of the quintessence was present in things on earth, making them affected by what happened in the heavens or in outer space.

Astral is a simpler name to grasp than Aether is, but what made me think of it was the star-themed gym in the first trailer. Not only does it feature a starlit background, but it also curiously transforms into a normal living room. That made me think of astral projection, which could be one of the type's main themes. The trailer also featured a space observatory.

They don't have to be associated with any new type, but aether is a fitting element for them provided that they have anything to do with Greek mythology. I think that they may be tied to the Gaia hypothesis in terms of explaining how Earth maintains conditions for life, and how the evolution of life and its environment affect each other.

Re: Revealed Gen VI Pokemon Discussion/Speculation Thread

Aether is probably my second favorite choice for a potential new type, after Light. There's some talk about Aether being too "esoteric" or difficult to understand, but I think in the context of the fantasy genre it's pretty appropriate. After all, the whole point of aether conceptually is that it is mysterious and otherworldly, so if the reference to archaic metaphysical concepts is obscure to some children, if anything, that will probably heighten its appeal. Compare to the concept of psychic, which the average child probably isn't well acquainted with, either. And translates fairly easily into Japanese as ki, so both Western and Eastern classical elemental systems can be represented in the type system.

At this point, if Sylveon ends up being an existing type, it seems to me to be a pretty anticlimactic marketing tactic. It's one of the first things we've seen from X and Y, the type not being revealed a ploy to generate hype. If it were an existing type, it seems like an odd choice as an opening centerpiece to discussion of a new game. Presumably if they had other new material that was more exciting, they would want to use that instead of a new, strangely ambiguous eeveelution. Announcing that Sylveon is flying type or especially normal type seems pretty much guaranteed to be widely disappointing. And the fact that it is ambiguous goes strongly against the eeveelution pattern. Each eeveelution is, as people have said, paradigms of their type (relative to the context of those types, e.g., Espeon). The fact that there have been flying types, for example, that don't have wings is pretty much irrelevant to the point that a flying type paradigm would almost certainly have wings or something else that made its typing, you know, unambiguous. A new type, whether it was fairy or aether or whatever else, would be able to establish the context for its paradigm relative to the other pokémon introduced or retconned in generation VI with that type. Namely, using pink coloring and sharing other features with Sylveon's design. But there is little that can be done in order to make Sylveon's association with an existing type anything but tenuous (besides, perhaps, normal type). But while Syvleon's body design may bear some similarities with other normal types, its abilities generally do not.

About the argument of a new type not happening in a long time: if types were added too frequently, they would accumulate beyond reason. 17 types is already a lot, so it seems necessary to slow the pace of any new type introductions to the game. Which also means that long term metagame considerations can be made. Game mechanic development does not always make changes to everything at a rapid pace, and this is a good thing. A new type may not be necessary, but changes to the game aren't made out of necessity. There's nothing necessary about you stopping play of Red or Blue, buying a new game, and playing that instead. The only questions on the issue of adding a new type or not is if the addition expands and enriches design space while appealing to a large enough demographic of players... and, of course, balance.

On the other hand, if there were to be a new type, hypothetically, introducing it through Sylveon would be a highly likely means. This being because it mixes the new with the familiar, a new type on a new pokémon which has ties to an old pokémon. It makes the transition seem more fluid and comfortable, and the possibility of a new typing is the obvious question that comes up with Sylveon. An old pokémon with a retconned type or a new pokémon with similarly ambiguous design themes as choices for introducing a new type might not even inspire that discussion. Sylveon does, because criterion-wise, it's more conservative to maintain the eeveelution pattern than to break it.

At this point we're left with an inductive inference, based off mainly negative evidence, that it's more likely for Sylveon to be a new type than an old type. Make of that what you will.

WHAT IF SYLVEON IS THAT TYPE!!!??! In February, they hinted at it being Flying in Smash, and in the preview of the next episode, they're hinting at fighting. Though it wouldn't really fit in with the rest of the Eeveelutions, I see it as a possibility. I called it first!!
