Gender of Ash's Pokémon that are unconfirmed.

All this time I thought I was the only person that liked to imagine Swellow was female.

That being said, NPCs in the games tend to end up catching Pokémon that match their own gender most of the time, so the same logic could apply to anime characters.
I suspect that might be why Ash only has a few confirmed female Pokémon.

Not really sure why that would be a factor considering that Ash is a stand-in for the male player character. So unless the writers are just assuming that players will only catch Pokémon that match their own gender, which would be presumptuous of them and a bit sexist, I can’t see that being a reason.

I added Corphish is anyone still here?

My headcanons regarding the genders of Ash's Pokemon:
  • Dragonite = Female
  • Gengar = Female
  • Farfetch'd = Male
  • Lucario = Male
  • Incineroar = Female
  • Lycanroc = Female
  • Goodra = Female
  • Greninja = Male (as Ash's can transform into the Ash-Greninja form)
  • Quilava = Female

P.S.
Both Fushigidane and Zenigame use the "ore" pronouns in Episode 017 of the original series "The Island of Giant Pokémon!?" which implies that they're both meant to be seen as male.

No, Iris's Axew was confirmed to be male in the Unova saga. Goh's Cinderace's gender meanwhile is still uncomfirmed.

Also, most of these are my speculations. the only ones that aren't are the ones who have "confirmed" next to them.

I am really curious to know what Goh's Cinderace's gender is. I've always considered it a female for some reason. But there's a very good possibility that it's probably a male if the anime follows the game's gender ratio percentage for starter Pokemon.

One of the things I liked about the BW Series was that many of the Pokemon's genders were confirmed due to Ash's Snivy and Iris' Emolga (both confirmed to be female), and Bianca's Minccino (confirmed male) constantly using the move Attract.

I find it extremely difficult for myself to believe that the gender of Ash's Butterfree remains unknown.
It is most likely male, as in the episode “bye bye butterfree”, the butterfree ash’s one wants to mate with is pink, which is mainly a feminine colour.

Unless it's stated otherwise, I'll go with:

Voice Actor Male = Male
Voice Actor Female = Female

If you trust the Masters 8 SWSH Mystery Gift genders then we now have confirmed genders for them with Dragonite being Female, Dracovish being Genderless and the rest being male.
It does seem like Horizons is sticking with the whole be vague and call all Pokemon it thing too.

That's why I said "unless it's stated otherwise."

But its never stated Donphan/Phanpy is a male though... despite that it had a female VA as a Phanpy.

So the way you are doing it, is already problematic, since many unconfirmed genders are already voiced by male or females.

For example Cynthia's Garchomp, who is confirmed female, is voiced by a male VA. So this already shows males can also voice female Pokemon, despite their gender not being confirmed.

I don't see why would it be problematic. If it's not confirmed, their gender doesn't matter anyway.

Nowdays Ash's Butterfree is confirmed to be male by gender differences in the main series.

In the past we couldn't use this because Ash's Butterfree was shown before those gender differences were a thing. But at the end of the JN series and in flashbacks in SM we saw Ash's Butterfree and the pink Butterfree. In the past they both had the male design because gender differences for Butterfree weren't introduced yet. However, nowdays the pink Butterfree has the female characteristics, while Ash's Butterfree had the male ones. The anime staff did update the appearance of an old pokémon to correspondent with the new canon around genders. If Ash's Butterfree was female, it would also have been updated. At least this is what I think.
