It will still be more than a week before we know anything.

I've been saying this from the beginning. I think they started in 2015. Sure not their entire was was working on it, but I'd imagine many were. That's why I'm a bit confused why people think the game will be rushed if it comes this year. If we knew for sure development started in 2016 then sure, but people are jumping to conclusions. I'm more than certain now that we'll see an announcement by the end of March.

The cave bear looks like something Game Freak would create, with the luminescence and scary face combination. Pretty cool, so props to whoever made it. (It's pretty cute too.) Makes me wonder what the real starters will be based on.

I never understood why they think the game will be rushed if it's released this year instead of next. One extra year does not make the difference. Diamond and Pearl together with Sun and Moon were all released after a 'break year' and I'm pretty sure that the general consensus about these games is that they are rather messy and unfinished (S/M were actually conformed to be rushed). If the creative team has a clear vision what the game is supposed to look like then there should be no issues. If they do not then it doesn't matter if they release the game this year or in 2025, it will still be disappointing.

It had a troubled production much like RS did. Though I've yet to see anyone call the latter rushed.
I honestly believe we should stop calling something "rushed" just because it has aspects we don't like.

I think it's more of people wanting GF to take a bit longer and put more time into the game so it can be better. They just want the game to be the best it can be even if it means waiting longer.

Indeed. Getting a good and well-polished game a little later is much preferred to getting a sloppily made, unpolished game a little sooner.

Yeah but you don't even know if the game is shoddily made. You're only shaken up the game might sell sooner than expected, and it makes you worry. In other words you're scared because of something unexpected.

And why will they start in 2015 (The Switch wasn't even revealed) And even then, its a new console, so the counter argument can be made they began working on XY in 2009, but the 3ds was officially revealed in 2010, which means they started working on XY a year/alongside BW and still the gap was three years, meaning it took them 4 years to develop XY on a new console since they didn't have experience with 3d (So if thats the case, 2019 is more likely than 2018, seeing its a whole new experience for them, being a hybrid and all with requirments they never have gotten before).

But that's a silly notion since we really can't say how long they've been developing it. Saying that they should take a little more time to make makes it sound like we know exactly when they started and what their game plan is. We don't so it makes no sense to assume the game will be rushed just because it's possibly coming this year

And thus it also doesn't make sense to assume the game will come out in 2018, because the gap between every gen has at least been 3 years, but never less.

Except the Ultra games when other 3 versions take just as to make, yet they came out practically in 2 years time

I think as far as I can say I assumed that Pokemon for the switch had started development in 2017 or 2016 at the soonest this idea that they actually started in 2015 seems to be just as much of an assumption though. They announced that they were working on the game in 2017 and didn't have anything to show off. To me, that means they were not ready to show anything off and everything was still in the concept stage, thus it makes no sense for a 2018 release when the game had only been worked on for a year. But if the game has been in development since 2015 then yeah it makes perfect sense that we should be getting it this year. I just don't see any evidence to support the 2015 hypothesis other than theory crafting.

Oh, absolutely. Especially seeing that they're very clearly intending to release this year, there's no doubt. We know GF got a Switch dev kit sometime in 2015, plus they always have two projects going on at once, so there's no reason to doubt that the Switch game was in its first half of development at the same time that SM was in its second half of development.

They announced that they were working on the game in 2017 and didn't have anything to show off. To me, that means they were not ready to show anything off

This doesn't mean anything. They did the same exact thing when Diamond and Pearl were in development for the DS. They had an early announcement that a new game for the next platform was in development before showing any actual content. Not to mention the very fact that multiple sources (sales forecasts, Nintendo execs, release window of "2018 or later" in their earnings report, and the E3 announcement video itself) have all suggested 2018. And of course they already have plenty of things finished that they could show off - but why would they?? They had USUM coming out soon, plus they never show anything until within 10 months prior to release.

I just don't see any evidence to support the 2015 hypothesis

They had a Switch dev kit in 2015 and they almost always have 2 games being developed concurrently. Plus, they wouldn't have even done that video last year (while also stating late 2018 as their goal) if they weren't planning for 2018. They said they expected to have the game done in about a year or slightly more, which confirms they must have already completed about 2 years of their standard 3-year development cycle for the game. Given that this video was in summer 2017, it practically confirms that the game started its development cycle in 2015 - the same time they got Switch dev kits.

No offense, but any denial about the fact that Pokemon Switch started development in 2015 (or early 2016 at the latest) is just that - plain old denial. You can call it speculation, sure, but every single fact and every bit of info we have all agree that Pokemon Switch began in 2015 (conceptual and planning at the very least, which is still development) and that their official goal is to release in late 2018 (even if it does get delayed a couple months into early 2019 like what happened with Diamond and Pearl).

It’s not that they didn’t have anything to show off, it’s that Game Freak never shows gameplay for a game more then a year before it releases. Why would they show gameplay in June 2017 when the game (presumably) comes out in Oct 2018 or later. That would be foolish and completely unnecessary. And considering the Mario trailer stole the show, there would also be concerns of a Pokémon being overshadowed.

Not revealed to the public. Dev kits started going out in 2015.

Also, relevant: Pokémon X and Y Began Development Before Black and White Launched

And thus it also doesn't make sense to assume the game will come out in 2018, because the gap between every gen has at least been 3 years, but never less.

It doesn't make sense to assume the game will get a sequel, because they've never made proper sequels.
It doesn't make sense to assume the game will release on an HD console, because they've never made such a game.
It doesn't make sense to introduce a new type, because they haven't done that in over a decade.
It doesn't make sense to have customization, because we've never had customization before.
It doesn't make sense to have a whole game in 3D, because they've never done that before.
It doesn't make sense to fuse Pokemon together, because they've never fused Pokemon before.
It doesn't make sense for a Legendary Pokemon to evolve, because Legendaries have never evolved.
It doesn't make sense to have a simultaneous worldwide release, because they've never done one.
It doesn't make sense to have a starter Pokemon change secondary typing, much less to become a Ghost type, because they've never done that before.
It doesn't make sense to add brand new Pokemon mid-gen, because they've never done that before.

They've already said it took them 3 years to develop XY so no they definitely didn't start in 2009. The big difference here is that XY were their first 3d Pokemon game and the new game isn't. They already have all the experience they need making HD models. Most of the models in the 3ds era games were super high res ones that were compressed to fit into the 3ds and that's why battles with more than 2 Pokemon on the field were super janky. Sure the Switch is a different system than the 3ds, but acting like they're completely starting from scratch is ridiculous. They already know how to create a 3d model world that's in HD. It's not about that. It's about learning the gimmicks that come with the Switch. The latter being less time consuming as most of their game play will largely be the same as it ever was. The only differences are that they'll need to figure out a good UI for the battles (lack of duel screen) and if they want to utilize the Joycons as more than just standard controllers.

Also I'm not sure why they couldn't possibly have known about the Switch in 2015. Just because we didn't learn about it until fall of 2016 doesn't mean Nintendo wasn't handing out dev kits to all their close 3rd party developers. The Switch didn't just suddenly start existing in that October. GF were one of the first companies to get the 3DS dev kits so it stands to reason that they'd get the Switch dev kits early too. So if they got it sometime in 2015 then I'm not sure how it's impossible for them to get a game out this year. They'd clearly start doing some kind of development on it given that the Switch doesn't have 2 screens and is different than the 3DS. In addition to all this you have to take all the pieces of info that we do know. The anime is rushing like mad, merch for gen 7 seemingly starts to slow by the end of the year, and at the Nintendo investors meeting they still have it listed as "2018 or later". If they weren't pushing to get it out this year they wouldn't even put 2018 in the timeline. They'd say TBA or 2019. They won't mislead or lie to their investors. They may play games with the fans, but if they straight up lie or mislead investors then they're risking losing major support. And even if the original release date was getting pushed back at this point they would have updated the timeline for this last meeting to reflect that. Otherwise it'd make no sense to keep saying 2018 is in the window.

You know it's funny people usually say no offense shortly before saying something offensive. I show the slightest bit of doubt about your pet theory and you're just like "oh look who's in denial" what the crud are you trying to accomplish by being insulting?

Yeah, it's possible that Pokemon Switch was started in 2015, but at that time the switch was just a rumor we didn't even know it was called the switch at the time. I recall specifically that someone from GF was interviewed about the switch and admitted that they thought it was going to fail and were surprised that it had done so well. Why would they be working on a game for a system they thought was going to fail? The only way that makes sense is if they were being made to do it by Nintendo but how much GF get's pushed around by Nintendo is debatable at this point in time. I would point to Black and White that came out on the DS when the 3DS had just come out as my evidence that GF kind of do what they want as far as these things go.

That being said it's not impossible that Nintendo put some presser on GF or GF decided to work on a game for the Switch anyways but it's far from the certainty you seem to have decided it is.
