Not revealed to the public. Plus dev kits started going out in 2015.

Also, relevant: Pokémon X and Y Began Development Before Black and White Launched.

Doesn't this support that XY was in development three years before it was released, not two, which means same can happen with the Switch game (And if Sun and Moon development began before XY launched, doesn't that mean a three year development gap, despite being on the same console).

But you can see it this way as well:

2010 - 2012 (XY Development) 2013 - Polishing off the games rough edges
2013 - 2015 (SUMO Development) 2016 - Polishing the games rough edges
2016 - 2018 (Gen 8 development) 2019 - Polishing the games rough edges

You know it's funny people usually say no offense shortly before saying something offensive. I show the slightest bit of doubt about your pet theory and you're just like "oh look who's in denial" what the crud are you trying to accomplish by being insulting?

Well, excuse me, then. I've re-read my post and there's nothing insulting or personal about it at all as far as I can see; if there was, it was unintentional and I apologize. Just basic argumentation and logic. But if you really feel that I insulted you, there's a report button that helps avoid escalation. Regardless, my apologies. It's fine if your view is different than mine, but mine is no "pet theory." Nintendo and GF themselves have already stated that 2018 is the official goal (going as far as giving this info to their investors), we know the Switch dev kits started in 2015, and we know that GF typically has a 3 year development cycle, and we also know from interviews that GF almost always has two major projects going at once. It's all but certain at this point. I implore you to find any fact that goes against our "pet theory." I used to be on your side and thought that anything pre-2016 sounded a lil early, before I learned more about the situation.

Doesn't this support that XY was in development three years before it was released, not two, which means same can happen with the Switch game (And if Sun and Moon development began before XY launched, doesn't that mean a three year development gap, despite being on the same console).

Yes and no. XY did take 3 years. SM was the same. I would agree with you, but the fact is that official sales and investor documentation and interviews have already suggested repeatedly, for the past 6 months, that 2018 is the goal. We could see a delay, of course - a delay is completely possible and I have no disagreement with that fact - that's why the "or later" remains after "2018." But the term "2018 or later" is specifically used for when 2018 is the goal. That way, their investors can plan for the release. We got this documentation just yesterday, actually (I can find it for you if you wish). Whenever games are delayed in development and the "or later" becomes a reality, they would change the window to "TBA" or "2019," neither of which they did.

I would point to Black and White that came out on the DS when the 3DS had just come out as my evidence that GF kind of do what they want as far as these things go.

Pokémon X and Y Began Development Before Black and White Launched

XY began development as soon as the 3DS dev kits went out. It was only "late" because it was their first 3D game. BW was in development and nearly finished before the 3DS was even announced and before dev kits went out.

Yeah, it's possible that Pokemon Switch was started in 2015, but at that time the switch was just a rumor we didn't even know it was called the switch at the time. I recall specifically that someone from GF was interviewed about the switch and admitted that they thought it was going to fail and were surprised that it had done so well. Why would they be working on a game for a system they thought was going to fail? The only way that makes sense is if they were being made to do it by Nintendo but how much GF get's pushed around by Nintendo is debatable at this point in time. I would point to Black and White that came out on the DS when the 3DS had just come out as my evidence that GF kind of do what they want as far as these things go.

That being said it's not impossible that Nintendo put some presser on GF or GF decided to work on a game for the Switch anyways but it's far from the certainty you seem to have decided it is.

So if they had no plans to make a Pokémon game on Switch until recently like you claim, what were the Pokémon originally going to do for the next Pokémon gen? In order to make improvements both in both graphics and performance, they need to work on newer and more powerful hardware. And considering the state of Sun and Moon( I’m afraid my 3ds my explode when I get into double battles on my 3ds) and GF’s ties with Nintendo, GF were probably first in line to get a dev kit.

As far as the Game Freak president thinking the Switch might fail, that doesn’t mean anything. You could think the Switch might fail but if you have no other option, you’ll have to do it. At no point has anyone from Game Freak ever said “Yeah, we’ll wait and see how the Switch does before we decided to make game on it.”

I have to disagree with you here. Nintendo did put an official sale goal for this year, however that doesn't mean a main Pokemon game has to come in 2018, since if GF announces a game for 2019, the Switch will also sell because people are preparing for it. Imagine having a household with 2 kids (And we get 2 sets off games instead of one, this one is an assumption but likely looking at the past) and the kids wanting to play Pokemon at the same time. Do you really thing parents will spent around 800 (Whatever money) for 2 consoles and 2 games in the same timespan.

Nintendo also overlooks one thing though: Most people (Especially the Pokemon fans) have bought a Switch in 2017 when GF announced a Main Pokemon Game was coming for the Switch, thus its more than likely a Pokemon Switch Game in 2018 doesn't increase Switch sales at all, since most Pokemon Fans already have them anyways.

"It doesn't mean anything?" I don't think that's true at all it means a lot especially considering what had just happened with the Wii U people were doomsaying after the switch was revealed saying things like "Nintendo hasn't learned anything." With all that it's hard to not at least think that game companies were at least a little nervous about the whole thing. If GF swallowed their fear and anxiety and worked on the game anyway then that's what they did and I applaud them for their courage and we will have a Pokemon game in 2018 on an amazing system. And maybe they didn't have a choice in the matter maybe they are bound by contract to make games for Nintendo hardware until the end of time. But these are all things we can assume but never really know for sure. At least not until the game is announced with a release date.

Again I'm not saying anyone is wrong about the whole 2018 thing it makes perfect sense what you're saying. But everyone seems so sure about this and people on these forums have been sure about a lot of things over that past few years that turned out not to be true. I'm just saying we don't know for 100% certain.

It doesn't make sense to assume the game will get a sequel, because they've never made proper sequels.
It doesn't make sense to assume the game will release on an HD console, because they've never made such a game.
It doesn't make sense to introduce a new type, because they haven't done that in over a decade.
It doesn't make sense to have customization, because we've never had customization before.
It doesn't make sense to have a whole game in 3D, because they've never done that before.
It doesn't make sense to fuse Pokemon together, because they've never fused Pokemon before.
It doesn't make sense for a Legendary Pokemon to evolve, because Legendaries have never evolved.
It doesn't make sense to have a simultaneous worldwide release, because they've never done one.
It doesn't make sense to have a starter Pokemon change secondary typing, much less to become a Ghost type, because they've never done that before.
It doesn't make sense to add brand new Pokemon mid-gen, because they've never done that before.

Even if Game Freak does whathever they want there wasn't any other choice.
There isn't another system Nintendo is going to release soon. Even if Ishihara (TPC president) believed Switch was going to be a failure there wasn't another option for Pokémon games.

Simple as that.

I didn't mean to imply that it must come in 2018. There's every possibility that it could be delayed a couple months into 2019. They've done that before. All I mean is that 2018 is definitely their official goal - regardless of what pans out.

"It doesn't mean anything?"

In regard to Pokemon Switch's development... probably not much. They didn't have any other choice than to go ahead and develop a Switch game. The 3DS is dying and Gen VII already maxed out its hardware capabilities. What else could they do besides go ahead and start making a Switch game?

There was an option, since the 3ds exist. There has always been an option.

It really wasn't though... Gen VII is clear evidence that they can't make any more technical progress on the 3DS. It couldn't handle any more. Gen VII chugs. Unless they were willing to hold off for Gen VIII for a couple extra years until something besides the Switch existed or had a successful release, then they could only move forward.

With gen 1, they didn't have an option because before the regular gameboy, there wasn't a console. But ever since gen 2, there has always been an option. They choose (Thus the option) to bring out games on new consoles when those where revealed, but the option to bring out a game on a previous console/current console has always been there. That is what i meant by there has always been an option.

Like they could have chosen not to bring USUM to it max limitations, but the next gen for example.

Yes, they always had the option to bring out games for older consoles, but if they don't continue to innovate, fans will get tired of playing in the same game engine repeatedly. Thus, they can either: create a new game engine (like they did on the DS with Black and White and on the 3DS with Sun and Moon) or create games on a new system. They can't realistically create anything more advanced for the 3DS, so they can either keep making games with the Sun/Moon engine, which people will get tired of eventually, or move to the Switch.

Yeah, the 3ds chugs when in a double battle and taking out triple and rotation battles is certainly evidence that they are pushing what the 3ds could do but if they wanted they could remove the trainer models during battle it's not like they do a whole lot anyway.

And even at that there is an underlying assumption here, you're assuming the next games have to look better/perform better than the current ones. I've been thinking of calling this the gamers fallacy the strange assumption that better graphics=better games. The fact that red/blue vc release sold so well should be an indication of the contrary.

Now we know well enough that GF are working on a Switch game I'm not trying to overturn that bit. But I think it is still entirely possible they could have been working on something else before the Switch ended up doing so well. And again I'm not saying that's 100% for sure what was happening, nor am I saying that's even the most likely possibility. But that's what I thought when the Pokemon Switch announcement came about. It seemed so half-hearted and uninterested. Plus it was strange to me that they needed to announce that there was a Switch game at all when quite a few people were already assuming that it existed.

On a somewhat related note, I still find that whole Pokemon Switch announcement to be strange. If Pokemon for the Switch was planned for 2018 why not wait until 2018 to announce it especially with us/um on the way? They had plenty of good games lined up for 2017 and people already had a good reason to get the switch in 2017 why not make Pokemon a good reason to have a switch in 2018 since they have fewer big games this year anyways.

As for their exact reasons, I'm unsure. Maybe just to begin building hype?

They essentially did the same thing for Diamond and Pearl around the time Emerald was releasing, iirc.

And then Dimond and Peral ended up getting pushed back anyways right?

That's the part of this that seems off to me, they've done this before and regretted it. Why not wait until 2018 when they could be surer of a solid release date? That's the part of this that seems off to me and it just gives me that strange feeling like there is something about this we're missing.

Some people say maybe Game Freak is aiming for a 2018 release but is not totally sure if they can make it out and I kinda believe this statement, somewhat.
This "2018 or later" thing is pretty ambiguous anyway.

The Problem of Induction (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Sir, I think you just won the whole thread. This is a perfect post. As for 3 years worth of development, if they got the Dev Kit in 2015, 2015 + 3 is 2018, and don't be drawn in to this theory that the jump from 3DS to Switch is a bigger jump than the jump from DS to 3DS. Creating 800+ brand new fully rendered 3D models completely from scratch is a much bigger deal than simply upscaling those models to HD/4K, something we've seen many Youtubers able to do.

As others have said, the most likely release date is December 2018, however they do have to add the caveat of (or later) just in case some bolt out of the blue pushes them back into January when it's no longer technically 2018 (see FRLG)
