That's the thing though. It's not the same for everyone. A real time battle system may feel livelier however I have never found turn based to be stagnant either. I always though Pokemon, the games at least, was more about decision making than reflexes. In terms of battles, Sun and Moon were pretty lively in my opinion. And another good example would be Persona 5. Even though turn based, it is bursting with style and movement. It is anything but stagnant. I feel a change in aesthetic or some additions like a stamina bar are enough and we don't need to overhaul the entire system to make it fresh. There are other areas which are in need of those. For example, like many have said, the exploration aspect. What I mean to say in that a change in real time direction may be fresh but it might not be necessary for everyone. And in my opinion is certainly not needed.Actually it wouldnt be change for the sake of change, it would be progress. Since the begining they have been trying to make things more lively and real. When color finally came out, sprites where no longer colourless. Then sprites gradually improved and finally in Black and White they where animated. Then X and Y made the leap to 3D models and since its been future proofed, it is likely to stay. Right now graphics in Pokemon are at its peak, they cant progress much farther with it (unless they want to make super realistic models), now its time to make battles more lively. They did that with weather and terrain, then in X and Y with in battle form changes, then in Sun and Moon with super flashy moves. Dropping the turn based system would be the next step and would create a much more lively Pokemon...
The battle system has been the same for the last 20 years, I think right now would be the perfect time for an upgrade
