Generation IV Remake Speculation

Will there be remakes in Gen VIII?

I hope it happens; sans redesigns. Even though they're inevitable, I hope the old art is kept, after the monstrosities that are (most of) ORAS's redesigns. Also, I expect knocked down difficulty for the little children who spam their starter, which I think might taint the experience.

I think DP remakes at the earliest will be out by 2018, if not pushed somewhere into the early 20s. Gen 7 is definitely going to be a weird one again, there's no doubt about it. Nintendo's giving an overhaul to their development infrastructure, and I think its going to apply to Gamefreak as well.

IDK what's going to happen with Game Freak next gen. Nintendo seems to be headed in the direction of more unified hardware, something of a PS4/Vita relationship. So I suppose Nintendo might push for Game Freak to develop main games that could be played on consoles via crossplay, but I can't think of any other way that Game Freak might change next gen.

Off topic, but I can see them giving us something like BBS, where you have 2 stories taking place, but ones obviously 2 years before the other. Maybe even a 3rd epilogue chapter can be thrown in?

Never heard of BBS, I still don't understand what you're saying.
Exactly the unified structure is going to either force GF to raise the development time due to a necessity for much more advanced graphical assets then what they're used to, or they're simply not going to give a damn and just release something a bit more better then XY, but with better textures.
I mean Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. It has 3 stories set in a number of same worlds that the plot is placed in. Basically, You would have in 1 game the story of Hilbert/Hilda going through the BW plot, and on the other hand 2 years later you have Nate/Rosa going through the B2W2 plot in the same cart. An epilogue chapter would be something like I dunno, having Nate/Rosa meet Hilbert/Hilda, or something crazy like Unova's renovation being completed entirely.

To be honest, I'm not sure where we can go from here, graphics wise. How do you make them better?

Game Freak may not have a choice in the matter in that case.

I doubt this would work for Pokemon. How would this work as far as transferring Pokemon between BW1 and BW2? You'd either need to use Bank, which costs money, or you'd need an entirely contrived system for transferring Pokemon between storylines for it to work. Also, if you could do that anyway, what's stopping you from taking your Dragon and blowing through BW2 with it?

To be honest, I'm not sure where we can go from here, graphics wise. How do you make them better?

They can always make them better by increasing resolution, polygon count, etc. Whether or not they actually look better is an entirely different, more subjective matter. I'm inclined to think that from this point on, graphical changes are bound to get gradually less impressive, but I think when they switch to HD (which probably will happen next gen), it would be fairly significant.

I made a post about this before but I wanted to expand on it. Personally, I think Barry should be traded out as the primary rival for Lucas/Dawn. Here are the reasons why I'd like this to occur:

1. Barry isn't a believable rival. Yeah, he's very competitive and arrogant, trademarks of the typical rival, but he's a complete joke and thus can't be taken seriously as one. And this is coming from someone who had to put up with him on her first journey. But while he seemingly gets some development, all we see of it is a speech and after that, it hardly shows for the rest of the journey. Now, I'm not saying he shouldn't be a rival at all, but he should be the secondary rival instead and filling Lucas'/Dawn's role as Professor's assistant, a role I can much more easily imagine him playing (I guess I just like the idea of a bumbling Professor's assistant :)). Meanwhile, Lucas/Dawn seems more like the type of rival I could take seriously and could follow the same pattern as their predecessor Brendan/May.

2. Dawn seems to be a more believable default protagonist. From a roleplaying standpoint, I think whenever unique characters take up the role of rival (ex. Blue, Silver, Hugh), it's easier to imagine the male protagonist as the main hero. However, it seems a lot of people seem to express a certain dislike of Lucas, favoring Dawn instead. But there's more to this, it seems another common trend is that the hero, from my perspective, is usually best imagined with a fire type starter. I know it sounds petty but please bear with me. In all official Pokedexes, all the fire starters are listed in between the grass and water counterparts. Now, in a lot of media, the protagonist is typically seen in the middle of a group of main characters. And because the center of an image is where the best focus is, this creates a psychological reaction that makes the viewer believe they're the main protagonist, and they'd be right. Coincidence? I think not. There is also proof of this in various Pokemon media, in which the main character is typically seen with a fire-type as their go-to partner. For example, Gold and Black from Pokemon adventures chose Cyndaquil and Tepig respectively, Ash, despite his main partner being Pikachu, has both a fully evolved Charizard and Infernape and evolved any other fire starters he had at least once, Nate from the BW2 trailer, who is seen the most often, is seen at one point with an Emboar, and Red from Origins ends up picking Charmander and fully evolves it. That being said, I did an experiment on Powerpoint in which I compared the two player characters and rival with the starters to see which fit who best. My results were: Barry with Torterra, Dawn with Infernape, and Lucas with Empoleon. In addition to my aforementioned theory, I had also found that rivals seemed to be best when paired with water types and secondary rivals, or friends, with grass types. And based what's been said already, I think you know the rest.

3. It would create balance. This corresponds with my previous point. Excluding Sinnoh, there have been three other regions where having the male playable character as the default protagonist made sense: Kanto, Johto, and Unova. Meanwhile there have been two so far where the female choice made more sense: Hoenn and Kalos. I personally see this as unfair and even saddening considering Pokemon is meant to be a gender neutral game. However, if Sinnoh ended up joining the latter group, it would create an even number of each protagonist for an even number of generations. Or, at least until gen seven comes along and tips the scales.

Overall, I really would like to see this happen in a potential remake for Gen 4. And considering they did something similar in Pokemon HGSS, I think it's far from unlikely.

First of all, Lucas/Dawn are even more forgettable than Barry, and you didn't even battle them. Second, they can also give him more character development so he can serve as more of a rival.

You're grasping at straws here. All of this is highly subjective, based on what you think fits the best, and I would disagree with pretty much all of it and say that these patterns don't exist.

Yes! I can't wait for the inevitable DPPt remakes! ^_^ Judging by the pattern of the past three sets of remakes, I'd guess we'll get them in around 2020. Sinnoh was my favorite region, Platinum is my favorite game, Dawn is my favorite PC and Empoleon is my favorite starter! I will forever be depressed if Sinnoh doesn't get a remake when Hoenn did... -.-

To be honest, I'd rather just get a Platinum remake with anything not catchable in the wild but still in the Dex (like Glameow) being available in the other versions of the new generation. Or even a sequel set during Black and White's time period, which would finally confirm the entire timeline! (But since Cynthia is on vacation in Unova and doesn't mention any recent events in Sinnoh, I doubt any sequel would happen during that time period. Unless it happens immediately after B/W's events...)

I want all the escort trainers (Cheryl, Riley, Marley, Mira and Buck) to have bigger roles. Not sure what, though.

I wouldn't mind them having a role similar to their Pokémon Adventures role (they helped fight Giratina and Charon in the Distortion World with all of Sinnoh's legendaries)

-Color Screen Poketch. If they can't do that at least, I dunno if it would be bearable to use.
-More Distortion World. Have it as some sort of recurring dungeon, advancing the plot when needed.
-Or better yet, introduce a Spacial Plane and a Time Rift or something. Having dimensions for each of the 3 would be much better then 1 funky world and 2 portals.
-Flesh out the companions. It was the best thing about gen 4, and I really wish they would have something like em again.

Otherwise, that's really it. Out of all the Pokemon games, Sinnoh has by far the most balanced region, with a story that doesn't suck. The only other thing I can think of right now is making the character clothing less bubbly, like Lucas' ridiculous(but awesome!)Platinum jacket.

The Pokétch could change colors if I remember correctly. I changed it from that tacky green to a nice purple. But you had to use Pal Park to migrate a Kecleon in order to get it. Migrating a Snorlax would get you a useless kitchen timer. I'd love more of the Distortion World and the inclusion of Dialga and Palkia dimensions. Those portals were so dumb.

And like I said above, I'd love for the stat trainers to help you out in battle. In fact, I could see something similar to all of the B/W gym leaders facing off with Team Plasma in N's Castle.

And before someone opens up a thread on "Will Generation 5 remakes happen" and someone inevitably replies "I don't think Gen 5 remakes are necessary/needed"
Yes they are going to happen!

I'm actually curious as to how 5th gen remakes would work on account of it having sequels.

Seeing as how it is such a unique case, I could actually see B2/W2 getting one unified sequel, making Unova a trilogy. Pokémon Gray version. You finally get to meet the original dragon that split into the Tao Trio by bringing them all together (I don't think you can gather all three without trading in one Unova game...)

calling it now 2019 pokemon dazzling diamond and precious pearl it will be after the third version of 7th gen if 7th gen is on a new console

I actually like the names someone else mentioned: ChronicDiamond and CosmicPearl. With FR/LG and HG/SS, the legendaries weren't the main focus and so the naming scheme was centered around the original names. With OR/AS the names were centered around the legendaries, but their Primal forms (Omega and Alpha).

But assuming (for now) that they won't Mega Evolve Dialga or Palkia, or Primally reverse them, then they would focus the names around the original pairs' powers. Time and Space.

And this is also assuming they wouldn't make a DarkPlatinum, a remake of the best Pokémon game to date, or even a direct sequel to Platinum.

Yeah, but what if they end up following through with the suggestion of giving Lucas/Dawn a bigger role in the game, or even have said bigger role be your rival? Also, please remember that this is something that I would like to happen, so, naturally, my personal bias would be influencing my opinion here, but it's not overrunning it. The only reason I included an argument was because I didn't want to feel like the only person who had this desire. Besides, I can hope. In addition, I found it rather disrespectful that you blatantly disregarded my opinion when that's exactly what I came to this thread to express without at least discussing it. I don't know if you meant to or not, I just wanted you to know.

As long as they keep Platinum's Sinnoh Dex, I don't care what they do with Platinum.

They need to expand it. To 217. There's seven Pokémon without a regional Dex to call home. (Heatran, Regigigas, Cresselia, Phione, Darkrai, Shaymin and Lord Arceus) I can understand Arceus, maybe even Shaymin and Darkrai. But Regigigas, Cresselia and Heatran can all be found without events and Phione is breedable from Manaphy, an actual Sinnoh Dex 'mon, so that never made sense to me.

217 is kind of an odd number, and I don't really see a need to include Pokemon that are simply post game, so no. If there's any Pokemon they absolutely need to add, it's Sylveon.

Which would make it 218. An even number. :) And why not make them main game? Cresselia is Level 50, Regigigas is Level 1, Phione can be obtained at any point as long as you have Manaphy, and Shaymin is Level 30. Darkrai, Arceus and Heatran could be left for further on, but they should still be in the regional dex. Every Pokémon's in at least one dex.

Perhaps I should've used the word "random" instead of "odd". Most regional dexes end on a multiple of 10 (not counting events), so they may not want to just leave it at 217/218.

Why put a Pokemon in the regional dex if you can't even obtain it until you have the National Dex? It's redundant.

Why put Mew and Celebi and all other event legendaries in their regional Dexes when you can't catch them at all? For consistency. It makes no sense for 7 Pokémon exclusive to Sinnoh not being in the Sinnoh Regional Pokédex. It'd never been done before and it's never been done again.

I think the reveal of the new 3DS model means that they want this generation to last a bit longer, so I think DP remakes might be pushed back a bit. So this is what I see happening now:

2015- Z for 3DS
2016- 7th gen games for New 3DS
2017/2018- 7th gen third versions/sequels for New 3DS
2019- 8th gen games for 3DS successor
2020- DP remakes for 3DS successor

Quite frankly, I would be more on board with another 5th gen situation if this is the case, I think New 3DS will be enough of a hardware upgrade for them to do some neat things with them.

I agree about the Generation VII prediction, but a third version being released in 2015 would be quite excessive. B2W2-XY-ORAS already constitute three consecutive release; there needs to be a break in 2015 or we'll end up with five consecutive releases, which really isn't a good idea both in terms of development and reception. Every generation has had a breather year and I see no reason why that should stop now. Not only that, but a third version is unlikely to utilize the New 3DS (at least significantly), so it wouldn't do Nintendo any favors.

I think that Generation VII should be released for the New 3DS in early 2016, with a sequel being released a year later before the 3DS' proper successor follows suit (I doubt that this won't happen by late 2017). Generation VIII could be released by the end of 2018, but in that case 2019 should be a breather year.

If they did make dppt remakes, I would love the distortion world to return, but more twisty and puzzley and stuff. That thing has awesome 3d potential. I'd also like to see the return of hair/clothing customisation, as dawn is obsessed with her looks. A bigger, more complicated hearthome city would be nice, as well as a redesign of mt. Coronet. I can work my way through that thing backwards. But yes, wibbly wobbly timey wimey twisty wisty spacey wacey stuff has so much potential in 3d, Pokemon would be losing out if they didn't develop them.
