Better late than never, I decided to write a Gen VII version of Generation VI: What's New for Pokémon Battles. With Sun and Moon, we’ve again got new Abilities, new moves, new items, and new ways to battle. And while most of you probably know all of this already, it’s always nice to have all info in one place.

So here’s a list of all the changes:

  • Z-Moves
The biggest new mechanic Sun and Moon introduced are Z-Moves. A Z-Move is a special type of move in which a Trainer and their Pokémon’s wishes combine to unleash an attack compromising the full power of both.

More about Z-Moves:
There are three different kinds of Z-Moves:
  • Z-Moves which can be used by any Pokémon, with one Z-Move for each of the 18 types
  • Status moves that have been turned into Z-Moves by one of the 18 type-specific Z-Crystals
  • Z-Moves that can only be used by specific Pokémon
A list of all Z-Moves and their effects can be found here.

Using Z-Moves
The Z-Move that a Pokémon can perform depends on the Z-Crystal it holds. There are 18 different Z-Crystals that correspond to each of the 18 types, and several others that correspond to specific Pokémon. Z-Moves work by powering up one of the Pokémon’s normal moves, so the Pokémon must also know an appropriate move. For the type-related Z-Crystals, the Pokémon must know a move of the same type as the Z-Crystal it is holding. For the Pokémon-specific Z-Crystals, the move required differs for each Pokémon.

When the Z-Move option is chosen in battle, a list of Z-Moves overlays the Pokémon's original list of moves, with each compatible move of the Pokémon's original moves overlain by a Z-Move option that draws upon that move. If the Pokémon knows more than one compatible move, it will be able to choose among different versions of the Z-Move with different stats, with the instance that has the highest power sparkling.

Z-Moves can only be used once per battle and draw upon the PP of the Pokémon’s original moves in order to execute, requiring and consuming PP upon use.

Mega Pokémon cannot use Z-Moves, even when holding an appropriate Z-Crystal (such as after Transform).

Damaging Z-Moves
Damaging Z-Moves derive their category (physical or special) and power from the original move. For example, a Gigavolt Havoc based on Nuzzle (with a power of 20) will have a power of 100 and be a physical move. While one based on Thunderbolt (with a power of 90) will have a power of 175 and be a special move.

Damaging Z-Moves bypass accuracy checks to always hit, unless the opponent is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Fly.

Status Z-Moves

Z-Moves based on status moves are enhanced versions of the original moves, having a Z-prefixed to the start of the status move’s name. While they have the effect of the original status move, the user also receives the effect of Z-Power, which is executed before the move itself. For example, Z-Splash also boosts the user’s Attack by 3 stages, while Z-Parting Shot also restores the switch-in ally’s HP by 100%. These effects are not affected by Contrary, Simple, or Heal Block.

Exclusive Z-Moves
Exclusive Z-Moves can be used only be specific Pokémon, and require a specific move to be upgraded. They have a fixed category and power. Exclusive Z-Moves can be used by a Pokémon transformed into an appropriate species regardless of its original species, if it holds the corresponding Z-Crystal. However, a transformed Pokémon cannot use its own species’ exclusive Z-Move unless it is transformed into another Pokémon of the same species.

Effects of Other Moves on Z-Moves
Protection moves (such as Protect and Spiky Shield) cannot fully protect against damaging Z-Moves. Instead, they will deal 25% of the original damage. Status Z-Moves can be blocked by protection moves, but will apply their Z-Power effect regardless.

Z-Moves may be used without regard to the effects of Taunt, Torment, Disable, Encore, Imprison, and Heal Block. However, the Pokémon never has an opportunity to select a Z-Move if it is forced to use Struggle (e.g. if it’s affected by Taunt and only knows status moves). Even if the target of Z-Heal Pulse or Z-Floral Healing is affected by Heal Block, that Pokémon’s HP will still be restored.

Z-Moves are affected normally by Powder and weather. Weather-changing moves turned into Z-Moves (except Defog) will fail as usual during heavy rain, extremely harsh sunlight, and a mysterious air current, but will apply their Z-Power effects regardless.

The types of damaging Z-Moves are unaffected by type-modifying Abilities (although status Z-Moves’ types are). However, their types are affected by Ion Deluge (if the Z-Move would be Normal-type) and Electrify.

Despite only being able to be used once per battle, Z-Moves can be disable by Cursed Body. If this occurs, the move that was upgraded into a Z-Move is unaffected.

  • Battle Types
Sun and Moon removed a few battle types, and also introduced a new one.

Removed Battle Types
Triple and Rotation Battles are no longer present in the game.

New Battle Types
Sun and Moon introduce a new kind of battle: SOS Battles. An SOS Battle is a battle in which a wild Pokémon calls for help from allies, turning a normal one-on-one wild battle into a two-on-one battle. These new type of wild battles start appearing once you clear the first trial with Ilima at Verdant Cavern.

Trial Pokémon (except Totem Pokémon), Island Scan Pokémon, Legendary Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, and the guardian deities do not call for help. Totem Pokémon always call for help, but use different mechanics than other wild Pokémon.

A list of all SOS Battle allies can be found here.

Totem Pokémon
A Totem Pokémon always calls for help at the end of the first turn and these calls are always answered. Totem Pokémon only have a preset set of allies they can call during battle (usually two) and once those allies have fainted, they cannot be called again. If a Totem Pokémon has multiple possible allies it can call, the ally it calls depends on the Totem Pokémon’s current HP.

Other Wild Pokémon
If there is only one wild Pokémon on the field, it may call for an ally at the end of a turn. In USUM using an Adrenaline Orb is the only way to make more than 1 Pokémon appear. Sometimes, no ally answers this call. The likelihood that a given Pokémon will call for help depends in part of its species. Some species cannot call for help (including most Pokémon that can appear exclusively as allies in SOS Battles).

Most Pokémon can summon allies of the same species, some can also summon other Pokémon in their family, and others can also summon other unrelated Pokémon. For some species, the allies that they can call vary with location.

Wild Pokémon are more likely to call for help if you:
  • send out a Pokémon with the Ability Intimidate, Pressure, or Unnerve;
  • if your Pokémon immediately uses super-effective moves on new allies called into battle;
  • if you use an Adrenaline Orb. (SUMO only since it's required for 2 or more successful calls in USUM)
The Adrenaline Orb can only be used once per battle and will fail if used repeatedly (wasting a turn without being consumed).

Wild Pokémon that have a non-volatile status condition will attempt to call for allies less often.

Within an SOS Battle, the chance for the called Pokémon to be Shiny, have perfect IVs, or have its Hidden Ability, increases with the number of answered calls. After 255 Pokémon have been called into battle, the counter rolls over and these rates go back to their default values, but will continue to rise as usual after more Pokémon are called in.

If a Pokémon originally called as an ally is defeated, all EVs earned by defeating it are doubled (including those from EV-enhancing items).

  • Abilities
In Sun/Moon new Abilities were introduced, some Abilities got modified, and some Pokémon gained new Abilities.

Modified Abilities:
  • Gale Wings now works only if the user has full HP.
  • Dark-type Pokémon are now immune to opposing Pokémon’s moves that gain priority due to Prankster, including moves called by moves that call other moves (e.g. Assist and Nature Power). Ally Dark-type Pokémon can still be hit by the user’s status moves.

  • Weak Armor now raises Speed by two stages (previously one stage)

There's also some new items, and some changes were made to existing items.

  • The Power Items (Power Weight, etc.) now add 8 EVs (previously 4 EVs).
  • The Battle Items (X Attack, etc.) now increase a stat by 2 stages (previously one stage).
Some healing items now heal a different amount of HP:

  • Hyper Potion now heals 120HP (previously 200)
  • Fresh Water now heals 30HP (previously 50)
  • Soda Pop now heals 60HP (previously 50)
  • Lemonade now heals 70HP (previously 80)
  • Aguav, Figy, Iapapa, Mago, and Wiki Berries now restore 50% of a Pokémon’s HP (previously 1/8).

New Items:
  • Adrenaline Orb - Makes wild Pokémon more likely to call allies for help in an SOS Battle + if held, increases the Speed of the holder by one stage if the holder is affected by Intimidate.
  • Beast Ball – A Poké Ball that works better on Ultra Beasts.
  • Big Malasada - Used to heal poison, paralysis, sleep, burn, freeze, and confusion.
  • Bottle Cap - Can be traded to Mr. Hyper to maximize one of a Pokémon's IVs in Hyper Training.
  • Gold Bottle Cap - Can be traded to Mr. Hyper to maximize all of a Pokémon's IVs in Hyper Training.
  • Electric Seed - A one-time use item that raises the holder's Defense by one stage upon activation of Electric Terrain.
  • Grassy Seed - A one-time use item that raises the holder's Defense by one stage upon activation of Grassy Terrain.
  • Memories – Change Silvally’s type.

  • Psychic Seed - A one-time use item that raises the holder's Sp. Defense by one stage upon activation of Psychic Terrain.
  • Protective Pads - Protects the holder from effects caused by using moves that make contact with the target.
  • Terrain Extender - Lengthens duration of Electric Terrain, Psychic Terrain, Grassy Terrain, Misty Terrain, as well as Electric Surge, Psychic Surge, Grassy Surge, and Misty Surge from 5 turns to 8 turns when used by the holder.
  • Z-Crystals - Required to upgrade moves to Z-Moves through the use of a Z-Ring.

  • Breeding Mechanics
Though there hasn't changed much about breeding itself, some changes were made when it comes to inheriting Poké Balls:
Previously, it was always the Poké Ball of the female Pokémon that was passed down to its offspring. In Sun/Moon, if a male and female Pokémon of the same species (e.g. a Bulbasaur with a Bulbasaur, not a Bulbasaur with an Ivysaur) are bred, the offspring will have an equal chance of inheriting either parent’s Poké Ball.

(Despite being able to produce offspring of either species when bred together, Nidoran♀ / Nidoran♂ and Volbeat / Illumise are still considered different species and the male's Poké Ball will not be inherited when breeding with its female counterpart.)

Furthermore, when a male or genderless Pokémon is bred with a Ditto, the offspring now inherits the Pokéball of the non-Ditto Pokémon instead of always being in a standard Poké Ball.

  • Base Stat Changes
Some Pokémon have gotten changes made to their base stats, the table below lists what has changed. The base stats are listed as HP/Attack/Defense/Special Attack/Special Defense/Speed.

  • Status Conditions
Some changes have also been made to the mechanics of some status conditions:
  • A burned Pokémon now takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum HP at the end of each turn (1/8 in gen VI).
  • When a Pokémon is confused, it now has a 33% chance to hurt itself (previously 50%).
  • The Speed of a paralyzed Pokémon is decreased by 50% (previously 75%).

  • Mega Evolution
Last, but not least, the way the turn order is decided during Mega Evolution has changed:
When Mega Evolution is used in a battle, the turn order is now determined by a Pokémon’s Speed after Mega Evolution, not its Speed before. Likewise, if a Pokémon only has an Ability such as Prankster before Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will not gain priority. If a Pokémon gains Prankster upon Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will gain priority.

Please let me know if there’s anything that’s missing or needs to be fixed, thanks!

Some things:
1) Adrenaline Orb also increases Speed (+1) of the holder if they are affected by Intimidate (ability)
2) Dark Void is now only useable by Darkrai, similar to how Hoopa-Unbound can only use Hyperspace Fury

Thanks for reading.

Both these points have now been added, thank you! :D
