Gym Discussion/Speculation

i was being facetious. i boggled when i saw flint's team. so many options by gen 4 and they do ... THAT *shudder* at least they fixed him for platinum

There was really nothing that could be done to salvage Flint's team with DP's Pokedex, that's why I said they should've either had more Fire types in the Sinnoh Dex in the first place or simply not created a Fire specialist in that game.

Then what other typing could they have chose then? The other typings not shared by the gym leaders and rest of the Elite Four would have been Normal, Poison, Dark and Flying. With the exception of maybe Dark, the rest of the typings were already being well covered by other trainers and Team Galactic.

Either way, I don't think a gym leader or Elite Four does not necessarily need to have their theme based solely on typing. Having some surprising twists for XY's gym leaders and Elite 4 would give some decent, unexpected challenge. Although I don't think they will go that route.

You forgot Dragon.

But yeah, Poison, Dark, or Flying would've been good choices.

thats just rocking one to watch up, i am impressed with it, thanks for sharing it with us here

I'm not too bothered with gyms sticking to type, simply cause the type themes are amazing so far. I mean:
Bug gym, shaped like a jungle, with the photographist leader standing in a tent, as if we're on a wildlife adventure.
Fighting Gym, that features the roller skates. This allows for deeper puzzles, as skate tricks will probably be needed to pass certain obstacles.
Rock Gym(?), probably a vertical gym. I guess that the rock climbing theme Grant has would have us go from a lower level to a high pedestal where Grant will be.
Electric Gym(?), probably gonna have lots of contraptions. Also guessing that its another vertical gym, thanks to the shape of the tower.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't mind the types, because now the leaders are so characterstic that even the puzzles are based on them.

I was kinda, eh, about another electric-type gym though as long as there's either a fairy or dark gym leader I'll be okay.

Very true. I love that this gen and last gen they went all out in giving gym leaders character, backstory, day jobs and hobbies. They are much more unique and interesting than most of the past gym leaders who were just basically 'there'.

I hope the Gym leaders have more side-stories with them. (Like how Skyla had to go to Celestial Tower and nurse a sick Pokemon back to health.) Maybe a Dark Gym Leader could be mistaken for an villain because of people stereotyping his Pokemon? I don't know, it would be cool to have them go through more trials and personal development outside of the player character.

There's one sometimes two gym leaders with side stories that cause them not to be at the gym in every generation:

Giovanni was the leader of Team Rocket and wasn't there when you first got to Viridian.
Jasmine had to nurse Amphy back to health before fighting you.
Norman was the player's father and couldn't be battled in order.
Roark needed to be brought back from the mine and Volkner needed to be motivated.
Skyla had to nurse a pokemon she saw back to health.

I might be forgetting some. But I really don't see this gen not having at least one leader with a side story. Out of the reveled gym leaders, Viola, Clemont, and Korrina are looking like the most likely candidates.

Well Korinna already has the whole Tower of Mastery and Mega-evolution teachings going for her, and assuming we don't fight Clemont the first arrival at Lumiose he could have a story on the side too.

They have always had at least one gym leader who was absent at first; but the last two gens have had the majority of the leaders (and the Champion) participating more in the story. I like that. No reason to think they won't include it this gen, but I'll be disappointed if they don't. It makes them feel like more than checkpoints, and makes the world you're exploring seem more real.

It was also implied in Granite's dialogue, that we might not battle him either until later or afterwards.

I would like a Dark type gym this go-round--they always seem to save it for the Elite 4.

I do hope we get an Ice type trainer for Elite 4 this time around though. Loved me some Lorelei, and it's past due IMO. :p

I'm not even a Dark fan, and I'd like them to have a Dark-type gym. Just because they never have, and it would be fun.

I think it's going to be Clemont.

He's located in Lumiose it seems, which its position on the map could easily be revisited...plus, according to what the Italian girl who is reviewing the game and leaked the PokeCenter pic, Electric is the fifth. Plus the Anime is also doing the "Clemont isn't at his Gym" and it seems like Ash won't battle him right away in a Gym Battle.

Leave it to the blonde guy to never be around when you need him to be.

I only say this, as I am one. :p

Anyone thinking about the fact that Santalune's theme is a spider-web but the only bug reveal so far is a butterfly? Maybe Viola will have some spider-like Pokemon? Personally I'm hoping for a bug-dark instead of another bug-poison but that's just me...

i am curious where these things from the italian reviewer can be found? all i remember is someone put a bunch of text with those images but none of it was actually written by the original leaker.

I find it odd that you didn't mention Grant as a likely candidate, seeing as his dialogue seemingly blatantly says we won't battle him right away for some reason. I agree that Korrina and Clemont may also have something preventing us from battling them right away, but I think Viola will be there, seeing as Alexa directs you to the Gym.
