I don't mind the fact that Ash did not use any of his older Pokémon during the battles throughout the Journeys. Each of his Pokémon had their time, whether justified or with some missed opportunities, but they did. It was the time for his newest team to shine, so in my book it is fine. The execution may be questionable, but using reserves would not solve that problem either, so.
I'm not really disappointed by it since I kind of expected that they wouldn't use Ash's reserves early on in Journeys. It is one of the reasons why I don't believe Ash's departure was planned from the start of Journeys though. If this was always going to be his sendoff series, actually using his older Pokemon throughout the PWC instead of just having them support his new team would kind of make sense, especially when I'm not sure how many of his older Pokemon are able to stand out in the Aim To Be A Pokemon Master specials. Even then, it's more strange and confusing as opposed to disappointing or upsetting for me.
A little bummed since this ended up being Ash's final series. I would've at least had Ash use some of his reserves
during the Masters Tournament if not for occasionally using them in other PWC matches. But it makes sense with the production issues.
Using the reserves for the tournament would've required a lot of new battle and attack animation for them
which would've put a lot on Team Kato's shoulders when they were already at their max when animating the tournament and then some.
