  • The two traveling companions were Kanto gym leaders
  • Satoshi faced the 8 Kanto gym leaders and 8 Johto gym leaders (with the Rocket trio standing in for Sakaki)
  • The villainous team from those games was in every episode, with the Lake of Rage Gen II plot being adapted in the Johto arc
  • Most game locations were visited from both regions, more or less in order of how they were visited in the games.
Pocket Monsters 2019, on the other hand, has spent more time in Kanto than Galar. It took almost a dozen episodes to start bringing in any notable game characters, theres no sign of doing the main games’ badge quest. Hardly any of the game music has been remixed.

Like of all the things to argue about this show, saying that the original series wasn’t based on the first two generations is just...factually untrue. Sure Kanto’s storyline especially wasn’t a 1:1 adaptation of the games but that’s never been the case for this show. Are you going to tell me Best Wishes wasn’t based on Gen V because of all the liberties it took?

The way the games were adapted may have been different, but it was still adapting them. This isn’t a matter of opinion, that series was objectively based on the games.

None of those are enough reason to assume that OS is planned as an adaption of only first two gens, unless you believe that they planned to make a distinct AG series five years before it's airing.

It's based on franchise in general, not certain games or generations, as happen with other series. Hence it's basically "Pokémon: the Anime."

That's literally never been the case until now.

The anime has always been based on the current generation of games, not the "franchise in general". Every series up until now has been based on a set of games, featuring the same characters and similar story elements.

The only time you could argue this wasn't the case was with SM, but even then, it still took place in the same region and featured the same characters. And after the first arc, it did start adapting the plots of the games.

PM has more episodes in Kanto than in Galar and features almost no characters or even Pokemon from Sword & Shield outside of cameos.

The Ruby and Sapphire games weren’t planned in 1997. Of course they weren’t planning on that. But they were planning on ending the series after Kanto.

Regardless though, once Generation III was planned, they ended the series. Because it was only based on the first two generations, not the whole franchise.

Didn't they originally expect to the anime to just cover the Kanto arc? With the games and the anime being much bigger successes than they expected, that basically led them to keep making more episodes and later on series. I don't think that they initially planned for the original series to adapt the first generations, but that's basically what they did with it. I'm not sure why they didn't make a separate series for Johto, but that might have been due to the games being delayed, which is basically why the Orange Island arc exists, or they only had the original trio traveling together again as opposed to any new characters from the second generation within the cast.

I think it's just because there seemed to be no reason to at the time, since Ash had the same companions and brought his old Pokémon with him, even if several of them were shifted away over time--this is similar to how the gen 2 games follow up from the gen 1 games more directly than later Pokémon eras.
In addition it was less certain at the time if Pokémon was going to become a full franchise or just a flash for a few years that would die out.

When the advance era came the anime followed the games lead of being a less direct followup, so it made sense to split it into a new series since Ash had new companions and mostly a new team.

If the creators knew Pokémon was going to become a full and successful franchise like Mario or Zelda and not just a few very successful games I think Johto would have gotten the same treatment in the anime as later shows--Pikachu only and a separate series.

Disagree.

GSC isn't like RS and DP. The former are direct sequels to RBY and aren't standalone games like RS and DP. So Ash doing the leaving everyone at the lab besides Pikachu schtick doesn't really work with Johto. IMO, what would have happened if they could have change things is just to ax the OI arc and just lead directly into Johto and have Ash's character arc come into full circle there, instead of coming in full circle at "Charizard Chills".

Depends if they want a strict Sword and Shield or will make a change up to make it feel like gen 4, or 6 more.

For me this gen could last 4 or 5 seasons taking the amount of new pokemon and potential of doing gyms, league and arcs, taking legendaries, expansions and unused past generation pokemon and moves...

I would want to see a collision of Z-moves, Megas, Dynamax and Giganta-max at some point.

Till now this season feels more like a Battle tree arc where Ash meets his future oponents and Galar and will probably make a decision when to go there for a journey.

In this arc I hoped he would battle some league champions like Cynthia and Elite four in full 3vs3 or 6vs6 battles using past gen pokemon. Greninja, Incineroar and others would deserve to shine more just now before beggining new gen arc and changing up the team a little more.

Hoped to see maybe his pikachu G-max via training , the expansions... getting a new team of 5 pokemon.
Maybe Gigantamaxing more pokemon like Melmetal?

Would be actually cool.

All of these shows are roughly the same length so it'll probably go on for about three years. But who knows? Now that we have DLC as an option maybe it's go on longer.

Another reason why it's not based on first two generation games.
Flawed logic. It’s based on the first two generations, and they decided to make a new series when a third generation came along.

That’s like saying that, suppose someone made a movie based on a book. The book suddenly has a sequel released and now you’re arguing that the movie is not based on the first book "because they originally only expected to cover Book 1".

They didn’t have the knowledge of how long the series would last, but that doesn’t mean that OS isn’t based on the first and second generation of Pokémon games.

Difference is, pokémon anime is a continuous medium, not static like a written book, it can be based on unlimited number of different games, generations, mediums, etc.

Doesn’t change anything. The creators themselves lacked knowledge that it’ll be continuous back then. They adapted according to the situation of the franchise continuing. It doesn’t erase the fact that the anime was based on the first and second generation games then.

So? The creators themselves lacked knowledge that it’ll cover the second generation back then. There was nothing suggests that it won't cover all future generations.
