This is what I've always wondered. If you're putting it into written form, how long would the Pokemon that's going to lose be able to hold out from the start to the end, however long that may be?

Well, it would depend on a variety of factors. If the one that's going to lose has the type advantage, then it should take quite some time, unless the winning Pokemon has a move with a type advantage against it.

Then there's the stats. If the loser's got high defensive abilities, then it should hold out for an extended period of time, unless it can also dodge fast.

I'd recommend carefully analyzing both Pokemon, and then start imagining how long you'd expect the losing Pokemon to realistically take before finally biting the dust.

However long you need it to be. I think the length of a battle should depend on the importance of the battle. If it means a lot to the trainer, then the Pokémon will be struggling throughout the battle to keep the reader guessing. If it's just a quick training battle, it would go faster.
