Does nyone know how many different kinds of spinda there are?

According to serebii.net, there were estimted to be around 256 variations around the release of Ruby and Sapphire.

EDIT: Odd. Bulbapedia puts the number at over 4 billion.

EDIT 2: This is from Spinda's article at Wikipedia:

In the game, a Spinda's spot placement depends on a variable called the "personality value", which is randomly determined upon encountering a Pokémon and usually just determines its gender and nature. In Spinda's case, each personality value also corresponds to a certain spot variation. Since there are 4,294,967,296 possible personality values, the claim that each Spinda looks different from every other seems convincing.

I didn't realize the game could differentiate Spinda THAT much.

Meowth calculated it for a small feature he once had on Pokefor that allowed you to see all the combinations you could have. He came up with the 4 billion number and there's really no reason to believe he's wrong in that.

Actually, 4 billion (232) is (far) overestimating it.

While it is true that there are more than 4 billion unique personality values... not all of them result in visually distinct Spinda.

The theory being that if you divide the personality value into 4 parts to represent the 4 spots - you could simply rearrange those 4 parts to put together a different personality value that still looks just like the first Spinda.

If we factor this in, then, assuming there are 256 locations for each spot, theoretically we have something like:
256C[sub]1[/sub] + 256C[sub]2[/sub] + 256C[sub]3[/sub] + 256C[sub]4[/sub]
Which comes to about 177,589,056.

And then, the fact that not all spot locations are visible means that number will have to be further reduced...

Already considered - if 2 spots overlap perfectly, then it's combinatorically speaking equivalent to only 3 spots. If they do not overlap perfectly, well, it becomes just a barely visible 4th spot. The problem is when the spots are not on the visible areas...

What if you were insane enough to catch all the different spindas?
and you know trading them to other games or releasing them? would the game make another spinda that looked the same as another or would you not be able to find anymore?

It is impossible to catch all the Spinda.

The most you could have is filling up an entire Pokemon Box save and you can only get 1,500 on that. In the games, I think the most you can have is 800 or something.

but what if you transerred them to a game and then deleted it. the original game wouldn't know the spinda were gone

The game does not guarantee that all Spinda are different. It cannot, and it would be stupid to do so.

It just relies on the fact that there is such a poor chance of even two Spinda being the same. 1 in 272 - or worse.

There are only Two kinds of Spinda: Live Spinda or Dead Spinda. All Spinda fall into one of these two catagories (with the exception of Zombie Spinda, which may or may not be real).
