How Much More Fleshed Out Could Misty, Iris, and Serena's Goals Have Went/Be?

I thought that they should promote more the pokemon?
characters can be implemented as vilians, rivals and co.
Really? do we need every generation a new girl and a change of people?
Why then not change main character then for the next series of generations and then let both meet in the middle.
Maybne a short secondary series about a rivals journey in future, after we get full 12 generations and still fans would want more.

Yes, every generations needs a new girl and a new group. They obviously don't want to get rid of Ash and getting rid of the main lead twenty years later sounds like a pretty bad idea for multiple reasons. Ash getting new friends to travel with is probably their attempt of having it both ways. They get new characters to promote the newest games, while their iconic leads Ash and Pikachu stick around. A secondary series about a rival's journey sounds cool, but I doubt that will happen, if only because they don't do a lot beyond the main series and a few specials every now and then.

The funny thing is a female lead with a tangible goal is the only way they get any proper screentime in this show. Look at Serena for the first year of XY...she did practically nothing and only had 1 pokemon. She was literally just there to crush on Ash and that's it. Now all of a sudden she has a goal and her screentime has increased tremendously, she's capturing/evolving pokemon and she's competed in numerous tripokalon's. She doesn't really battle, but oh well.

To be fair, I did prefer when the Contests resembled battle competitions like May's did in AG rather than the focus on appeals and looking pretty like they turned into during DP and now the tripokalon's. The Contests in AG were barely different than normal battles half the time just with a point bar, so you just felt like you were watching May in battle tournaments. Since May also didn't wear dresses and won most of her battles by KOing her opponent like a Gym battler, it made May feel more like a trainer than a coordinator.

Obviously the writers decided to differentiate Contests from normal battling more once DP rolled around, but its pretty funny in retrospect how May comes across as being a battler rather than coordinator.
