I've been hearing from others that episode ratings to the S&M series in Japan haven't been doing well recently, Is this true or false?
 
They somewhat fell through recent months.

From what I can see, so far, the time slot change has done nothing to help the ratings. If anything, it has hurt the ratings, both in numbers, as martianmister above me has shown, but also in its placement in the Top 10. Before the change, it was routinely in the Top 10 with it only missing it a handful of times. Now, save for the premier in the new time slot, it has been outside the Top 10 in both subsequent episodes. The ratings for this past Sunday's episode will be indicative, to me, whether or not this is merely a fluke, or a trend.

Have past season experienced drops this low? Is it common for this to occur?
 
@martianmister Thanks for the data! It seems that low numbers are more common after the UlaUla arc ended, and the Necrozma arc didn't raise them at all.

The last 10-15 episodes of Season 1 Best Wishes performed terribly, but Dawn raised them back to high levels.
The last episodes of AG were below average.
XY also had a low point but I don't remember when exactly, condensed data is hard to find.

From what I can tell, the numbers are lower, at least now, than they were at other points in most series. Still, XYZ had some pretty low ratings and were out of the Top 10 on a number of occasions, while Sun and Moon have routinely been in the Top 10. At the beginning I remember SM having higher ratings than the end of XYZ, though I don't have the numbers on me, there have been some 4s and above sprinkled about in Sun and Moon. Still, I think that XY (not Z) had noticeably higher ratings than the Sun and Moon did at the beginning. I don't know about the rankings regarding XY, though., or how they compare to the rankings for Sun and Moon before the time slot switch.

If it says "less than", I would suspect that the show did not make the Top 10 that week. What actual number counts as being bad changes considering the shift in viewing habits and the likely increase of DVR viewing.
 
SuMo's ratings seem so mediocre and bordering on embarrassing lately, but it's not surprising given how lame the Necrozma stuff was.
 
Given the recent ratings, viewers clearly like when Sun & Moon is doing Sun & Moon things (i.e. Trials, Grand Trials, Pokemon Development, etc.); myself, included. Not that the writers seem to care though.
 
A few things worth noting:

- The show started streaming on services like Hulu and Amazon Video starting from XY so watching the show "live" hasn't been the only (legal) option for a while now. The ratings dropping aren't surprising.
- "Bad ratings" are in the eye of the beholder; there are so many shows out there that would absolutely kill for what's seen as "bad" ratings for Pocket Monsters. It's all relative.
- TV ratings (good or bad) aren't the only factor keeping Pocket Monsters on the air. The show's viewership could absolutely tank but as long as the merchandise still sells (which it absolutely will) the show's in no danger of being cancelled.
 
From the looks of it, the new timeslot has taken a minor hit on the anime, however, it still reached 2.6 (this past week) which is serviceable given it's competition. However, its interesting to note that the ratings started to tumble when the quality of the anime fell as well. BW benefited for a short period due to how fresh it originally felt, but it eventually fell flat when the quality of the show dropped to a level that made it nearly unwatchable. I also think the whole playing around with the anime has hurt the show's popularity. BW, XY AND SM are so far apart from each other that they almost feel like different shows. Conversely, the original series up until the end of diamond and pearl felt like a natural progression and thus it was easy to follow. What I'm trying to say is that you needed to watch diamond and pearl because you wanted to see how ash has progressed. While you don't need to watch sun and moon, because it's an admittedly trivial show that presents no importance and will be forgotten once it's over. It won't have any result on ash's journey and the characters probably won't reappear again. I wonder what they will for the next generation, but given how well the movies have been doing lately i think the series returning to its traditional routes is the only way to go. Give ash brock as a companion (lets face it, while he outgrew his welcome he would bring viewers back as well as his successors providing to be worse alternatives) and obviously the female protag for the games
 
Seems like a natural decline that can happen to any long-running show.

A new arc or a whole new series for Fall '19 would push the ratings to 3-3.5. Though the timeslot change definitely affected its ratings.
