Just a fun hypothetical thread.
Let's pretend that Misty and Brock left the show after Orange Islands (or rather Tracey did), and never reprised their place on the cast. Instead, every saga was made of just new characters from its respective games, bar Ash and Team Rocket, like BW and XY did.
So the main team set-ups went like this:
Johto: Ash, and two GS Game Characters, preferably one of them female.
Advanced: Ash, May, Max, and a RS Game Character
Diamond and Pearl: Ash, Dawn, and a DP Game Character.
What Game Characters would you cast for each saga, what would their personality be like, akin to the games, or a new interpretation? What would their goal be? What Pokemon would they use? Who would voice them, if you want to have fun?
For me, Johto would star Janine and Professor Elm joining Ash.
Janine is, of course, a ninja girl with various ninja abilities, who is on a training journey to prepare for taking over the role of Fuchsia Gym Leader (her slightly canon counterpart, Aya, would not exist in this alternate timeline), and vows to protect Ash from Team Rocket as her ultimate training mission. She'd be usually very stoic and strict, but often her facade would fall and a goofier, clumsy side would emerge. Her main Pokemon would be Spinarak, and she'd get other "ninja-ish" Pokemon, perhaps like Sneasel. In the end of Johto, she battles Koga and takes over as the new Gym Leader, and in Battle Frontier she'd make a cameo appearance as the Fuchsia Gym Leader.
Professor Elm is quite "young" for a Professor, thus I think it'd be interesting to see him join the cast. Realizing his inexperience, he'd leave his aides in charge while shadowing Ash, hoping to get a more hands-on approach to Pokemon Training, and learning more about Pokemon Eggs along the way. His main Pokemon would be, I dunno, I guess a Baby Pokemon? Maybe in this time line Misty never got Togepi, and instead Elm got it since he discovered the egg in GS? Maybe give him other Baby Pokemon. His personality would be observational and passive, as well as scatterbrained and nervous. He'd try to act like the adult most of the time, but often fail. In the end he returns to his laboratory, giving out Pokemon once more, and would cameo during the DP saga where he journeys to Sinnoh with Lyra and, uh, that other dude.

Advanced would star Mr. Briney
More or less the same character, the "old man of the sea", he'd be the adult of the group and the caretaker, his goal to explore the seven seas, and would help ferry Ash and co. around the various water routes of Hoenn. I was thinking as a favor to Norman he'd join the group to watch his kids and keep them safe, so would have sort of a distant authority figure vibe to him, but would take on Brock's more positive, caretaker roles as time went on, particularly towards Max. And, hell, maybe make him an occasional anime-style lecher who'd hit on cute girls. Give him Peeko, of course, and maybe throw in Mudkip and Lotad to him, since giving him Water Pokemon works pretty well. He'd be a surprisingly competent battler, and would often help stop Team Rocket. We really need a cool old man in Pokemon as a companion, honestly. In the end, after journeying back to Kanto with Ash for the Battle Frontier, he'd take Max and May back to Hoenn, and then set off to explore the seas (and appear far later when Hoenn was remade!)

Diamond and Pearl would star Marley
Roughly the same as her appearance in the actual show, a goth girl who's a bit blunt and negative, contrasting with Dawn. Despite her glum demeanor, her secret talent would be sewing and would help make Dawn's costumes, as well as generally helping Dawn out with her Contests. She'd also cook, but would make comically bad food. Her goal is to overcome her dark personality and make friends, perhaps she'd live in Dawn's town and would be sort of a stalker (in a light hearted way), who decides to join Dawn on her journey to befriend her. Her and Ash would often fight and have a more difficult relationship, but she'd win him over eventually as well. Give her Brock's Croagunk, since it'd fit her personality, and maybe throw in her Arcanine from the games as her main battler. They'd move the Shaymin episode to the end of the saga, where she feels comfortable in her personality and realizes she has great friends, and decides to chase after Shaymin and use its power to bring joy to the rest of the world.
So, yeah, have fun! Also, don't feel like you gotta stick to major named characters, like with Max, you can turn an otherwise nameless NPC or Trainer Class into a full character if you want!
