One of my ideas would be mentions of Silver's mother included in the story.

If they do it my only hope is one I wished they had done with HGSS. The games will tell if you have previous save data from the Kanto game, and it will ask something like "did you like the team you entered the hall of Fame with?" And if you say yes it gives red your team from the last time you entered the elite 4. Also it picks the correct gendered character that you played as.

That's what I want them to do, with that fight being between Chase/Elaine and their team being the most recent team that you entered the Hall of Fame with in the original LGPE.

If it's a few degrees of separation from the events of the original games like LeGo, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be Gold, with the first game's protags being hidden bosses like Red and Blue were (unlocked by challenging 10 Master trainers and clearing Cerulean Cave)

Well, having Ethan and maybe Kris (and Silver if they replace him in the story) as super bosses wouldn't be a bad idea.
