The topic is simple; name one or a few people who traveled with Ash or is just a friend (ex; Ritchie) that you want to see in X and Y. No need for doubting and gloom here, this is just for you to explain what qualities you think they could bring to the show. For example, here's my lists;
Who; Misty and Brock
Role; Traveling companions
Why; Well for starters, they are essentially Ash's best friends. They're the people who were lucky enough to have been with Ash as he started his journey and they were there during critical moments and achievements he experienced as a trainer. Each exhibit their own traits well; dear ol' Ash is of course our confident yet rash protagonist. Misty is fierce and brings Ash down to earth, but that is complimented by her kindness for both people and Pokemon when they are in need or feeling down. Brock is the mature older brother figure that takes care of his friends and their Pokemon, keeps them from strangling each other, and always has wise advice for them. Not only are they popular with older fans, but younger fans are sure to enjoy them just as they would an all new group. With proper handling, I strongly feel this would be a win-win move for everyone. To compliment this, I'd like newcomers Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor to appear, but as their own traveling group whom Ash and co meet up with (now there's an interesting idea, hmm?)
Who; Ritchie
Role; friendly rival
Why; wait, what? RITCHIE!? You mean that Ash clone that makes people angry because he'snot the almighty "Red" a copy of Ash? Well....yes . Of all the non-hostile rivals, Ritchie is interesting to me because the writers do not utilize quirks or just...juvenile mannerisms to make his character. Instead, he's actually a down to earth guy whose genuinely nice and loves Pokemon. No catch needed. Its his connection to Ash fostered in the indigo league episodes that gives him value that in my opinion, transcends his "clone" status. We accept Nurse Joys and Officer Jenny's don't we? I say the thing that makes or breaks a character is not necessarily who they're based on, but what their personality is like and how they interact with other characters.
Who; Gary
Role; rival/recurring character
Why; While I'm tired of juvenile rivals, if the writers absolutely had to include one of them, then I'd prefer they take Gary and make him the smarmy, arrogant, Pallet Town #1 again. Because of all the rivalries of that kind, the one between Ash and Gary still had depth and meaning beyond the endless going at each other. Again, character connections are the driving force in my opinion that are the highest points of Pokemon. Furthermore, there's a double edged sword here; they could instead choose to keep Gary's current maturity and the relationship with Ash would work in a similar manner to Ritchie. There's just a lot of flexibility of what they can do with Gary and so it would be interesting if they one day decide to focus on him again.
