Speculation If you were GameFreak

Should it go the other way, I'd hope to see the moves remain available in TMs 101-105+ for Gen VII onwards.

I never thought of them splitting the outside battle function and battle function into an HM and TM respectively. That might actually be a good idea. When you receive an HM, you'd get the TM, too, if you wanted the battle functionality.

See, there are just too many ways to go with this. No excuses anymore Gamefreak!

Then here's my new idea to use this. Move HMs to the Key Items section and make them work like the Gen VI Exp. Share. Pokémon capable of learning, say, Cut from TM101 can cut down bushes when HM1 Cut is enabled. With HM2 Fly enabled, a Pokémon compatible with TM102 Fly can carry you to a previously visited location like usual.

Sound good?

RBY: I would go overseas as early as Gen 3 instead of going to Kyushu. Alola would be the region for Gen 3, with a more explicitly Hawaiian cultures and characters prevalent throughout. The Pokémon line-up will also be slightly different - the Regi trio will be moved to Gen 5, while the Kami trio would be moved here (or taken out entirely). Furthermore, I would stick to real-life countries - thereby explaining the break between Gen 3 onwards from Gen 1-2, and for the transporter between HM!Alola and Kanto. Because you need special customs clearance to transfer Pokémon internationally, and you can't travel to Japan without a passport. I would have preferred GF did this like Yokai Watch did in their third main game, and keep the premise of an alternate version of our world with actual countries instead of downplaying them like they did.

DPPt: I'm not sure how this would go, but as my hypothetical Gen 3 would be Hawaiian, Gen 4 would also be non-Japanese in its region. Alaska, maybe, or Russia/Scandinavia? I'm not too sure how to tie my hypothetical region with HM!DPPt's story and legendary Pokémon...

HGSS: Finally make Leaf canon to the story. Either she is the champion if Lyra is your character, or if you did a "Kanto-Johto Link" like you did with Unova Link. As for Team Rocket, I might supersede GSC (and to some extent, FRLG) and add more backstory - maybe they are right-wing renegades that wishes to see the revival of the honor-based Japanese Empire; or they are formed by people who are trouble coping with the rapid changes in Kanto's/Japan's society etc.

BW1+2: Add all of the previous protagonists to the PWT as the ultimate champions. Their signature Pokémon depends on which game you are playing, and what gender you are playing as. However, data transfers from FRLG/RSE/DPPt/HGSS overrides all other data in terms of past protagonist's Pokémon starter. As for the region, it is further Americanised - any residue leftovers of Japanese culture would be further downplayed, being more like Yokai Watch 3's St Peanutsberg and Earthbound's Fourside. All the major character have their ancestry explicitly known - and I actually have some ideas of that in one of my blog entries. The American notion of liberty, freedom (of dissent and individuality), and democracy would be made more explicit in my version. Instead of the Kami Trio roaming, the Gen 1 elemental birds will appear - with Articuno in Winter, Moltres in Spring, and Zapdos in Summer.

XY: Most of the basic premise/region/culture will stay as they are - I have no objections to the reasonably accurate (for a Pokemon region; at least its better than the all the past regions except Johto) depiction of France. As for the Great Kalosian War though, I will make that either during the Hundred Years War, or the Napoleonic Wars, or World War II - something more recent. And Lysandre would be a right-wing terrorist that takes inspiration from both Deloncle, Le Pen, and Francois Coty - his notion of beauty is the beauty of European Kalos without the "undesirables" (think minorities, or communists or anything else that fascist organizations hate). Also, the Muketeer Trio may be caught as the roaming Pokémon here, either to replace, or to be in side with, the elemental birds.

interesting... i think hoenn should be Greece as Sootopolis is designed over santorini and there's a lot of greek architecture references.

and Sinnoh should be Russia. the battle frontier is already based on Russian territory, so would be better make the whole region based on Russia.

Anyway, i still want to see a region based on those countries as they are unique with really interesting architectures.

Are the Greek architectural references just Sootopolis? Or is it other parts of Hoenn? I've gone with Alola because that would be what I think one of the most logical option for a tropical region (besides, say, Queensland or Guam), and an overseas place that almost all Japanese would be familiar with.

If Russia should be the region for DPPt, I might change the legendaries to be of more Russian (or Mongolian/Slavic, depending on where in Russia) references then.

At any rate, I agree, I would like to see Russia/Greece/Italy and their architectural stuff to be a Pokémon region. For me, the prevalence of European architecture and French culture is why I loved XY. Ditto with GSC and with its actual traditional Japanese culture.

yeah, makes sense. But even so, i particuarly think Russia with the cold war, fits Sinnoh theme: dimensions, space time, robots, etc...

As for Greek references in Hoenn, besides the santorini based city, there's the sky pilar that has greek architecture.. Even if nowadays this style is not strict to Greece, i think it would fit well. The main land being continental Greece, with Rustboro being Athens (?), and the surrounding islands being the minor greek islands.
Hawaii would fit Hoenn perfctly as well.

-Make games for the current gen consoles and for PC rather than handhelds and ofcourse, with realistic graphics.
-Not a turn based battle system instead, a battle system similar to the one in Anime. It is just great.
-More appearances of characters from previous games.
-Continue with more mega evolutions instead of creating Z-moves.
-better storylines
-if a person loses against a rival, we would have to give them cash just like they give us and the story will continue and we will not have a battle with him again at that point. This would make it much more competitive. In current games, we just keep crushing everyone.

- Allow you to see every Pokemon in the Pokedex without trading
- Have a location similar to the nature preserve in every game
- Kept Pokestar Studios in gen 6
- Made the B/W protagonist the super-boss of B2/W2
- Didn't scrap Honoguma or the Clefairy Hitmontop fusion

Ok so, for some of this I'm just gonna echo some other people who already posted. Also. I think about things like this a lot. This is probably gonna be huge.

Hms would never exist and instead you would have a metroidvania like returning to old areas after you found useful items setup (like hedge clippers). Either that or all HM moves would be strong attacks that would be useful (Rock Smash is Brick Break or Cross Chop ect)

Many Normal and Flying dual type birds would be just flying type or have a different dual Flying type (Staraptor would be fighting and have it's design changed in some ways to go along with that).

Persian would be Purrsian (and I would get bricked. why would I get heat as opposed to anybody else in GF that makes pokepuns? thats a story for another day).
It would also gain an ability that would let Purrsian still use crit spam past gen 1 (not like persian has anything else going for it), but maybe turn it down a notch, and the ability wouldn't stack with the higher crit chance on some moves (like slash). It would also have already been part dark type (maybe make it's cousin Liepard some kind of ghost cat instead).

The Kami Trio would have never had human forms, either that or there would be one human like pokemon along with the 3 animals instead of 3 extremely similar human/genie things.

Various beta pokemon concepts would have gone through (possibly later if time constraints were a factor).

Throh and Sawk would still have their Oni horns, Bellossom would have kept it's Oddish line coloring, Kakuna would have kept its arm stingers, Torchic would still have the huge bunny ears (they're cute), Quilfish's old design would have been kept, Girafarig's old design would have been kept or better yet used as an evolotion, Politoad would have the original king design for the poly line final evo or the design would be mixed in with Polywrath's (maybe just give it big fighter fists and a scowl), Poliwag would never get it's weird lips, the Dolly sheep would have gone through because I doubt anyone would care enough for there to be a controversy, and Honoguma and ESPECIALLY Kurusu would be pokemon.

Hidden Abilities would just be extra alt abilities given after the fact.

Mega Audino would have Regenerator and base Audino would be Fairy type. Infact all the abilities that megas have would probably just be alt abilities that even the base form could have, and they would be the same after Mega Evolving. Megas also would not necessarily ware off after battle. Instead it would be controllable wether they do or do not, and you wouldn't need a keystone to evolve them (so you could potentially see wild megas roaming around without humans).
*i would make 6 moves instead of 4 OR add one or two slots just for the HMs. with that, it would allow more status moves (for players like me who only use attack type moves) and/or not force you to give up on a good move just to pass through a freaking bush
If I remember right I think in an interview someone from GF actually said they considered doubling the amount of moves you can have at a time once. I can't find the interview again at the moment, but if the idea came up and I was in charge I would go through with it (maybe not double though? 5 or 6 maybe)

I would also eventually try to do something to very significantly change the battle system itself, probably something like the ATB system from Final Fantasy.

Megas would have been introduced after Z Moves or Z Moves would have just been scrapped all together. Either some or all Megas would just be the same as Alola forms, and some of the really busted ones or ones that belong to pokemon that don't need them, might not even exist. At the very least, things like Mega Garchomp and Salamence would still only be one per team.

The Battle Frontier from Emerald, Walking Pokemon from HG/SS and Challenge Mode from BW2 would be reintroduced in every game after their introduction. Challenge Mode would not have to be unlocked and would be an option from the start. Customization would be in ORAS and every game after 6th gen, and you be able to customize your pokemon as well by dressing them up in the same way you do in the Pokemon Musicals, you also would be able to remove your hat before now.

There would be more references to Pokemon spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon (alt universe shenanigans), and the Orre region games (just flat out canonize them).

The battle with Red in HG/SS would be with Leaf if you played as Lyra, and a similar special battle with Hilda or Hilbert would happen in BW2. If Memory Link is used they use either the latest team of pokemon that you have in the Hall of Fame, or just the party you currently have in B&W.

The Mega Stones for Mewtwo would have been outright stated to be artificially made for a second Mewtwo, Lucario would have an alternate Mega, and Venusaur and Blastoise would have 2 megas to match Charizard.

Badges would determine obedience for pokemon over a certain level even if they are not traded in pokemon, and pokemon that have low friendship would also be disobedient instead of just making frustration stronger.
Oh yes. Burn that awful thing into nothingness. Or at the very least, give Brendan an equally garish Pop Star outfit... actually, come to think of it, why can't we do that anyway? Choose from five coordinated outfits for each Contest category, I mean. It's like, how the hell am I supposed to coordinate Rock Star Brendan with Pikachu, Ph. D.? Giving them five outfits each would also allow this to happen, and that's just too f*cking cool.

I remember seeing that art a while ago. I loved it a lot then and I still do! I would make that happen. The outfits from the Super Contests would also be reused and be unisex.

There would be buffs for Ice type. Ice would resist dragon and be immune to water and water would be weak to ice. Ice would also get a stat boost in hail. Normal would become a Neutral type that does no super effective damage but takes none as well, either that or a neutral type would be introduced.

Other Mix Battles would come back and be available online. Inverse Battles would also be online and Multi Battles would allow you to have up to 12 pokemon on a team made up of you and a partner's pokemon.

Friendly rivals and friends like the friends and alt player from x&y would not exist or be toned up in jerkyness. Barry and Cheren would be bigger jerks. Wally and Bianca are ok, but Wally would get much more time in the spotlight and would probably take Brendan/May's place as a character, and Brendan/May would not exist as in game characters of their own. Losing rival battles would not cause you to restart and instead the game would continue on and the rival's next party would be different if you lost compared to if you won.

The old Exp Share that only gave exp to the holder regardless of if they were used in battle would be a separate item from the version that exists now and The current version would be called the Exp All.

Rematching Gym Leaders with updated parties would always be possible. Steven stepping down as champion and Wallace taking his place would be an actual in game event that would happen after the main story and you be able to fight Steven again after in a different location with an updated stronger party, and you would be able to fight Juan at this point as well. Professor Oak is explicitly pointed out as the past champion before Blue. Blue doesn't know this.

I think thats about all I got.

I drop Customization from the games completely. Give Milotic and Flygon mega evolutions for ORAS. Gym leader rematches in XY and ORAS with full teams with mega evolution.

  • Agreed on the Diantha thing. She was very plain compared to the other champions before her. She had no real personality, a very flat champion. I would have much rathe r saw someone else be champion, or Diantha take more of a place in the storyline.
  • Top Pokemon in your party always follow you, no matter what game, and you can turn this feature on and off.
  • The experience share from Generation 6 be in every game, but there experience share from the previous generations also be in the game. You can turn on/off the Gen 6 one whenever you like.
  • Trainer Customization earlier on, and make sure that the base trainer still has it's own unique features, and isn't just generic, for the people who don't want to customize their trainers.
  • Less friendly rivals, more competitive, and even jerk ones.
  • All the games should have had settings, Easy, Medium, Hard. You don't have to unlock hard mode, and if you find the middle of the game the levels are just too high or too low, you can switch it mid-game.
  • Being able to rechallenge all trainers, from the first games to the last, including gym leaders, elite 4, and champions. I remember in HGSS some trainers would call you if they wanted to battle again. That was cool, but they don't even have to call you. If you need to train just go to a route and rebattle some trainers. You would have to go up to them.
  • NO trainers that would continuously battle you upon sight, like they had BW2. There were a couple of them in there, and gosh they were annoying.
  • The PokeRadio. This thing just needs to be in every Pokemon game. it's great. If you don't want to use it, don't turn it on. If you're training on a route and you're just sick of listening to the same route music, being able to change it to some different ones would be nice.

I would have made Fairy super effective against Ghost. Ghost has the same problem of "weak only to itself and one other type" that Dragon had. Plus, trapping moves/abilities no longer work on Ghost, and it's also resisted by only one type since Steel got nerfed. Ghost isn't exactly OP since Ghost moves are fairly weak and Ghost-types generally don't have the stats Dragons and Gen I Psychics had, but it'd still be a bit of a balance.

GEN 1: HM's can be deleted/ an HM deleter in every town. The Bulbasaur line is only Grass type. More pure Rock and Grass type. Voltorb is only in the power plant. No silph co, Giovanni is in the Elite four, with Bruno as Viridian city's gym leader, and no trade evolutions.
GEN 2: No Kanto it cuts the game in half. Jhoto Pokemon's stay in Jhoto. Fix the level curve. Getting stones is easier. Thunderbolt, Ice beam and Flamethrower are TMs.
GEN 4: Improved the game speed.

I can think of an entire laundry list of things:

General:
-Change the following Pokemon's types:

Psyduck/Golduck- Water/Psychic
Sunkern/Sunflora- Grass/Fire
Masquerain- Bug/Water
Huntail- Water/Dark
Gorebyss- Water/Psychic
Luxray- Electric/Dark
Watchog- Normal/Psychic
Beartic- Ice/Water
Flabebe/Floette/Florges- Grass/Fairy
Xerneas- Fairy/Grass

-Ice would never have just resisted itself. At some point in the series it would have another resistance, maybe to Ground and Dragon.

RBY:
-Sabrina would be replaced with another gym leader. With the lack of Ghost and Bug types in those games, there never should've been a Psychic specialist in those games.

GS:
-Use more Johto Pokemon in the gym rosters. Give Falkner a Hoothoot, Bugsy Ledyba and Spinarak, Whitney a Snubbull, Morty a Misdreavus, Jasmine a Skarmory, and Pryce a Sneasel.
-Shuffle around the Pokemon so we see more Johto Pokemon in Johto and some of the Kanto Pokemon could be moved to Kanto.
-Meowth and Persian would be retconned to be Normal/Dark.
-The Nidorans would be able to breed with each other.

RS:
-They should've made it clear from the start that older Pokemon were going to be accessible in future games and give you the National Dex post game. Maybe throw in a handful of bonus Pokemon in post game.

FRLG:
-Cross gen evolutions would be obtainable in the game instead of being restricted to the National Dex.
-The Day Care on Rt. 5 would take two Pokemon and allow you to breed.
-The story would be fleshed out more to feel more like RS', the Rocket Executives from GS would appear in the game and become specific characters and the plot would be more detailed to give TR more motivation behind their random schemes and make them come off as more of a threat.
-Red/Leaf serves as a secondary rival in the game.
-Rt. 3, Rt. 4, Rt. 9, and Rt. 10 would be redesigned to be more vertical like some of the areas in RS and feel more mountainous.
-Rt. 7, Rt. 16, and Rt. 18 would be lengthened so they don't feel like a waste of an area.
-Rock Tunnel would be redesigned since the original design makes no sense (seriously, look up a map on Google and try to connect the ladders. They make no logical sense whatsoever). It would still vaguely resemble the original design, but it would be more vertical and the areas would logically match up with each other.

Platinum:
-Sinnoh Dex would be expanded even further to 225, throwing in more Dragon types and a couple of assorted other Pokemon to round things out.

HGSS:
-All cross gen evolutions would be obtainable in the games. Eevee could evolve into Leafeon in Ilex Forest, Eevee could evolve into Glaceon in Ice Path, and Magneton could evolve into Magnezone on Rt. 32.
-Lyra plays more of a role in the storyline and teams up with you at one or more points in the game.
-The Rt. 7-8 Underground Path would also be open after restoring the Power Plant, and the two Underground Paths would physically intersect with each other allowing you to bypass Saffron City in any direction you want.
-Mt. Moon would be redesigned to resemble its original design and size. There would also be trainers in the area again.
-Cinnibar Island's volcano would be explorable and have wild Pokemon. Moltres is moved to the top of Cinnibar Island instead of Mt. Silver.

BW1:
-Old Pokemon would show up in BW1 instead of being only new Pokemon. Obvious clone Pokemon such as Timburr, Woobat and Roggenrola wouldn't exist. Frillish can stay because Water/Ghost.
-Emolga would be an evolution of Pachirisu and Alomomola would be an evolution of Luvdisc instead of a separate line.
-Less linear region design.
-The C Gear would have actual apps like past regional gadgets instead of just being a glorified communication device.
-Instead of outright nerfing field moves, they would have HMs occupy a completely different moveslot.

BW2:
-Challenge Mode would be available from the start without the use of a key system, and would be a permanent feature in the series.
-Version differences in areas could be changed by keys and the Pokemon that show up in the opposite version's area would be catchable when you change keys (for example, if you're playing Black 2 and you get the key for White 2's Route 4, you can catch Mincinno and Braviary).
-The Pokemon distribution would be reconfigured so all Unova Dex Pokemon would be catchable before beating the game and post game areas would contain Pokemon that were DW exclusive, so that all non-legendary Pokemon would be catchable without needing the DW or PokeTransfer (although you would still need the DW to get certain HAs).
-There would be more Hidden Grottoes in the game and the Pokemon appearance ratio would be more reasonable.
-Fossil restoration would take place in Driftveil City until post game.
-The Day Care is now moved to Rt. 5.
-The entrance to Twist Mountain would have a grass patch that allows you to catch Ice types to use against Drayden.
-Breeders don't continually annoy you with rematches. You have to talk to them to rematch them.
-Relic Castle would be less nerfed from its original design and the two halves would remain connected (although you would need to use Strength to allow you to go from the Resort Desert section of Relic Castle down to where Volcarona is). The bottom section of Relic Castle would be more mazelike and you would have to use quicksand pits to reach Volcarona.
-Challenger's Cave would still be accessible in BW2, this time from Rt. 10 which is reopened. At the bottom you would catch Mewtwo.
-Accumula Town, in keeping with its theme of being a fast growing town, has become a full city and expanded east to the sea.
-Hilbert/Hilda can be battled through Memory Link.

XY:
-Mega Evolution would be a little more balanced along with cross gen evolutions. Megas would be for more subtle changes to Pokemon or for Pokemon who aren't normally capable of evolving, whereas more drastic changes or Pokemon that need major power boosts would get actual evolutions. For example, Sableye and Mawile would have evolutions, while the Kanto starters, legendaries, and third stage Pokemon like Ampharos would have Megas.
-Rhyhorn Racing would be a minigame in the games.
-Retool the storyline to have more of a buildup to the final confrontation with Team Flare. Also give Diantha more of a role in the storyline and have her help you at some point.
-Instead of having Inver run Inverse Battles, it would be a battle type in the Battle Maison.
-Battle Chateau trainers would have full rosters instead of nerfed rosters.
-The PSS would be part of a larger regional gadget called the PokeTablet, this time based around a tablet like device. Once again, it would have more apps like what we've seen in past regional gadgets.
-The Elite 4 would have rematch rosters the second time around.
-Post game legendaries would be more evenly spread in this game, with Reshiram/Zekrom appearing in Parfum Palace, Kyurem appearing in Frost Cavern, and the Lake Trio settling on various spots in the region (Uxie would appear in Ambrette Town, Mesprit would appear in Pokemon Village, and Azelf would be on top of the Tower of Mastery).
-Sea Spirit's Den would allude more to a connection between the Bird trio and Lugia.
-Kalos fossils would be obtainable in the Friend Safari.

ORAS:
-4th, 5th, and 6th gen Pokemon would appear in the Hoenn Dex.
-The Battle Frontier would reappear in the games.
-Instead of Mirage Spots, there would be actual post game areas in the game. They are accessed from the Battle Frontier once you defeat Sudowoodo and gain access to Artisan Cave. Visiting these areas would be required to start the Delta Episode.
-Soaring would be obtained after completing the Delta Episode instead of after beating Primal Groudon/Kyogre.
-4th and 5th gen starters would appear through other methods in the game instead of getting them all from Professor Birch.
-The Emerald expansion of the Safari Zone would reappear in this game as this game's equivalent to the Friend Safari and would contain all HAs that didn't appear in Kalos (including the remaining starters and Skrelp/Dragalge).
-Victory Road would resemble more recent Victory Roads, with a mix of indoor and outdoor sections, a variety of environments, and a diverse amount of wild Pokemon.
-The Game Corner would be retooled as an arcade with minigames that could be played for prizes. The in game lore for this could parallel the real world, where the Hoenn region pressured the Game Corner to be more family friendly and less gambling focused.
-Instead of random Hoopa holes everywhere, the remaining legendaries would be obtainable through various methods and sidequests in post game. The Beast trio would be runners, Lugia and Ho-oh would be obtainable in Navel Rock, Dialga/Palkia appearing in Meteor Falls, Giratina appearing in a portal to the Distortion World from Mt. Pyre, Heatran would be on Mt. Chimney (with Volcarona taking its place in Scorched Slab) the Muskedeers appear in various areas of the game similar to how they did in BW2 (Cobalion would be on Rt. 114, Terrakion would be in that hidden section of Rt. 116, and Virizion would be on Rt. 119), Regigigas appearing in Sealed Cavern after catching the other Regis, and the Kami trio you have to chase while Soaring.
-Jirachi would also be catchable in a sidequest starting from Mossdeep City.
-Match Call would be fully implemented in the game and you could rematch gym leaders once again with it.
-Trainer customization would stay from XY and Hoenn's outfits would be more adventurous and rugged.
-Desert Underpass would be explorable in the game and you could obtain fossils and post game Pokemon there. It would also lead to a secret ruins area where you could catch Unown.

Not going to go into a lot of detail here on changes to rosters and distribution, maybe in another post. There is soooo much to cover just on that topic alone.

I would have implemented customized trainers much sooner and allowed for darker skin tones. Also I would have had Celebi distributed outside of Japan.

Really interesting stuff over here! Why am I such a morron by only checking the Gen VII-threads..

I can think of a few things that bug me the most:

  • Rename Mr. Mime.
  • Make the Gothorita-line female-only
  • Make better seats, so that Brendan and May can sit normally next to each other at the end of the Delta Episode.
  • Make Dragon weak to Fairy as opposed to immune. I agree that Dragon-types needed a nerfing, but for a type that is only supereffective against itself, Fairy being immune was (and still is) a complete overhaul in my humble opinion.
  • Give Ledian a stat boost, dammit.
  • This is just for fun and near impossible: make an event Ditto. But not just any Ditto: the anime's transform-everything-but-the-face Ditto. Can you imagine a Ditto-faced Xerneas?

1: Once you use an HM(like Cut, Rock Smash, or Strength) you will not have to use it again on the same thing(eventually getting rid of the useless HM party-slots).
2: You have a chance to capture every Mon in the game without being forced to trade. In turn, adding at least one Mon that has a different form depending on the version(ex. Lycanroc)
3: Instead of the player always going "...", insert in the missing dialog in the conversation(ex. If your rival is talking to you and replies to what you say).
4: Add an extra save slot and modes(ex. Two save slots, Adventure mode/Nuzlocke mode)

I feel like I could go on forever with this kind of topic, as the more you dig into it the more you find, so I won't bother and I'll keep it to one major thing: I definitely would have introduced trainer customization a lot sooner.
