In Memoriam: Celebrities

Professional wrestler Windham Rotunda, better known as "Bray Wyatt", died on August 24, 2023 from a heart attack. He was just 36 years old. We also lost two big name members of Congress this month as well. We lost former Senator James Buckley (who represented New York from 1971 to 1977) at the ripe old age of 100. Al Quie, who represented Minnesota in the House of Representatives from 1958 to 1979 and served as Governor of Minnesota from 1979 to 1983, died at the age of 99. At the time of his death, Al Quie was the earliest elected former member of the House of Representatives who was still alive.

And now two more stars have died. We lost longtime Price is Right host Bob Barker at the ripe old age of 99 on the 26th. He hosted The Price is Right from 1972 to 2007 and Truth or Consequences from 1956 to 1975. And on the 24th we lost Arleen Sorkin at the age of 67 to multiple sclerosis. She was best known for portraying Calliope Jones on the classic sitcom Days of Our Lives and for being the voice of Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series.

Actor Sir Michael Gambon has died at the age of 82 of pneumonia. He was best known for TV shows The Singing Detective and Maigret, and taking over the role of Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films following the passing of Dumbledore's previous actor Richard Harris.

He also voiced Uncle Pastuzo in the Paddington films.

Forgot to mention the loss of Jimmy Buffet earlier this month at the age of 76, who was a singer best known for the hit song "Margaritaville", among other classics. Although the big death today was that of Senator Dianne Feinstein at the age of 90. Senator Feinstein first came into the Senate in 1992, after she won a special election for the seat of then Senator Pete Wilson, who resigned his seat to become Governor of California. She was a trailblazing woman in politics who chaired several committees during her long tenure in the Senate, including both the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee (and was the first woman to chair both). Her and fellow California Senator Barbara Boxer were the first women to simultaneously hold both of a State's Senate seats. Before entering the Senate, she served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and eventually Mayor of San Francisco, California.

If we count trees as celebrities, the Sycamore Tree featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) has also passed away, having been chopped down by some stupid teenager. On Facebook, the tree is being just as mourned as Michael Gambon. Coincidently, both had some ties to Alan Rickman, who died in 2016.

Australia has also lost a beloved VFL/AFL football legend this month. Ron Barassi, who helped Melbourne win three VFL premierships in the mid-1950s and is considered one of the greatest Australian football players of all time, passed away on September 16; I think the AFL Grand Final being held tomorrow intends to honor him, as they've been talking about introducing an award named in his honor. (UPDATE: Mike Brady paid homage to Barassi during his yearly Grand Final performance of "Up There Cazaly". The full footage is not yet available on YouTube, though).

Things like that make me furious, stupid kids doing stupid things and innocent living things have to suffer/die because of it.

Watched the Grand Final. And in regards to the award named in his honour, it was talk about renaming the Premiership Cup in his memory.

Also passed on is comic writer Keith Giffen. Have single issues or trades with his work.

Among his work, he is the creator of Rocket Raccoon for Marvel and Lobo the Main Man for DC Comics.

Piper Laurie passed away last night at the age of 91. Other than the Stephen King movie "Carrie", she was probably best known for her role as the villainous Catherine Martell in David Lynch's mystery drama "Twin Peaks" which I am currently watching right now and am saddened to see her go.

Bobi died last Saturday. He was a Rafeiro do Alentejo purebred dog who has the longest verified lifespan of any dog in recorded history, living to the age of 31 years old. He lived his whole life in Portugal. The previous record holder was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey who lived to the age of 29 years old before being euthanized in 1939.

RIP Richard Moll: Richard Moll, Bull the Bailiff on ‘Night Court,’ Dies at 80

I might have seen Night Court very young (Watched stuff like M.A.S.H. and WVRK in Cincinnati), but namely a lot of characters voiced by him.

- Harvey Dent/Two-Face on Batman The Animated Series, Krick on The Zeta Project and Java on Justice League.

- Voiced an associate of Joe Chill's, Lee Moxon on Batman The Brave and the Bold episode "Chill of the Night" Had some VAs based on those in Batman '66 and BTAS.

- The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk from 1996 and second voice of Mac Gargan/The Scorpion from Spider-Man 1994.

Some LA roles I do know are Dementor from Jingle All the Way, Camp Chef Jimmy from Summertime Switch, The Drifter from 101 Good Deeds for Eddie McDowd and Smallville's Season 2 episode "Nocturne" as Mr. Moore.

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who shaped the Cold War history of the United States of America has died aged 100 (Henry Kissinger Is Dead at 100; Shaped Nation’s Cold War History). What should be noted is that he was a controversial figure in not just US political history, but global history. While he was celebrated for paving the way for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China in the 1970s, he was also reviled for the bombing of Cambodia at around the same time.

And we have now lost a third political icon in such a short amount of time. That being Sandra Day O'Connor, who served as a justice on the United States Supreme Court from 1981 to 2006. She died today at the age of 93. She was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and was most famous for being the very first ever female Supreme Court justice in history. She also served in the Arizona State Senate from 1969 to 1975 and also served as Chancellor of the College of William & Mary from 2005 to 2012.

A pretty hyperlocal thing, so hyperlocal that even people outside Melbourne, Australia won't probably get this story. Businessman Franco Cosso, famous for his ads on television selling furniture here in Melbourne, Australia has died aged 87. He had stores in Footscray (near Footscray station, near where I did a TAFE course after completing Year 12) and Brunswick in Melbourne. A couple of years ago, he was at the centre of a documentary, which was aired nationally on ABC TV Plus a couple of years ago. The building that housed his business in Footscray is still around, and there is even a mural of him near the Footscray store.

You can check out the ad here, which watching it was part of the Melbourne childhood:
