Aretha Franklin
American Singer
Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer and songwriter. Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was minister. In 1960, at the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records but only achieving modest success. Following her signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem" and "Think". By the end of the 1960s she had gained the title "The Queen of Soul".

I found out when I went on the internet this morning, and it is worth noting that there are tributes to her on Rage tonight for those in Australia on the ABC, as well as on Foxtel. There was a story on SBS World News here in Australia about the death of Aretha Franklin, and this is quite scary but it was mentioned in the story that Aretha Franklin (the Queen of Soul) died 41 years to the day after Elvis Presley (the King of Rock and Roll) died.

When I read this, I felt my heart sink and my face turn pale. What a treasure of a man to lose. He will be missed by those who love his voice, and I hear he was a real gentleman to those around him. May he rest in peace.
