Ash captured many Abanded Pokemon and trained them to not only serve his own benifit, but to show their previous trainers how wrong they were about these Pokemon;i.e, infernape and pignite... Only then to be ditched at Oaks at the end of the series and never seen again. Ironic how ash abandens the Pokemon that he seeks to save. Really undermines his character a bit, doesn't it? The worst offender is, likewise, bayleaf. Who has shown an obsessive behaviour over ash while Ash goes out of his way to ignore her. He even says that it's been a long time when bayleaf returned in sinnoh, however, he doesn't even use this Pokemon and likewise hasn't even reached out to it since. Even when he returned to Kanto, he only interacted with Bulbasaur. Why not his other Pokemon? Especially one's like infernape whose purpose is to show how powerful and useful it really can be? Yet, left to wander Oaks lab. Completely ignored and without any purpose. If Gou is a psychopath, then surely ash is too? In fact, he is a greater offender as he often ignores his Pokemon when they don't serve his purpose and behaves like they never existed at all. No mention of them are also never made. Ever. Especially after best wishes. How can anyone defend a character let alone like a character who has shown no motivation to acknowledge and reach out to his pre-existing pokemon? And a character that seemingly strips any agency and purpose and even hope of these pokemon just to stick them at some ranch from a professor who seems more interested in spending time with Ash's mum?

He isn't a psychopath. But his treatment of his older Pokemon does undermine his character. However, older fans are supposed to suspend their disbelief when it comes to this sort of thing since Ash ditching his Pokemon is really due to marketing.
