Is there going to be gym challenges?

I suspect we're getting something more like Totem and Noble battles in this game. There's probably multiple cities, but I'm not sure there's going to be 8 of them and I think since it's open world, they'll want to emphasize the region's nature and wilderness. Something more like Totems/Nobles is better for that purpose.

I also think we'll be able to do them in any order. It's not much of an open world if they constantly open up 1/8th of the map over the course of the game, part of the appeal of an open world is being able to go anywhere you want. I think they'll do something like what they do in BotW with the Great Plateau, you'll start in a small section of the world that serves as a tutorial, learn how to use the field abilities like with the Runes in BotW, maybe the first gym/trial/whatever you won't have a choice, but then after that you're free to go anywhere you want and do things in whatever order you want, including the gyms/trials/whatever which will scale up based on how many badges/whatever you have.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as everyone else, I enjoy the gym challenges but with it being open world it would be nice if they could spice up the traditional gym battles a bit without completely reworking them. Being able to do them in whatever order you want - to an extent, I kind of suspect them being locked behind field abilities if we do have them, but even having the option to pick between 2 or 3 at a time would be nice - although if we are going with an academy setting I feel like gyms might feel a bit odd mixed with that.

Honestly I wouldn't mind them going all in with the academy theme and mixing it with gyms as well - perhaps they aren't traditional gyms but battling a teacher to pass a class. I feel like this could open to some interesting themes with the actual battles, perhaps instead of just a grass type gym leader we could have a teacher who specializes in something like sunny day / hyper beam setups, or instead of just a water gym leader it could be based around rain dance and rain dish or something of the like. You could have a teacher that specializes in held items - perhaps showing that evolite can make unevolved Pokemon stronger, or one that specializes in double battle and how a pokemon that is weak on is own can shine in those (ie. Plusle and minus) I think it would serve the purpose of teaching the students about different setups / abilities / items / whatnot yet remain reminiscent of the more traditional gyms in prior games.

They could split the difference and have powerful trainers who live in secluded parts of the world. (perhaps they live more closely to Pokemon, sort of like the wardens in Legends) So the "gym leaders" aren't necessarily located in towns/cities. (at least not exclusively)

Sort of like a Red at the top of Mt. Silver but spread across 8 different trainers.

I would still love themed teams to be used in a gym challenge one day. Instead of type experts, why not expand that concept into teams based on a specific attribute or theme: stat experts, rain teams, etc. heck maybe even something as straightforward as the environment (I’m a gym leader that has a gym in a forest, therefore my team is based on Pokémon that can be found in a forest). Idk, if gyms return I’d like to see them approaches differently than the usual type experts.

Regardless of whether we get gyms or not, I really hope we finally get a Ground-type specialist named Terra. I think it would fit well with a Spain region.

Open-world game = gyms can be challenged in any order = we can finally have Gym Leaders whose teams scale and change depending on how many Badges you have

Need Gyms now.

(why do I only have big ideas about this game when I'm high?)

I really want gyms back because I find the idea of challenging them in any order I want and having them scale accordingly very appealing. To me it would emphasize the openness of the world instead of removing altogether. But we'll see.

i'd like for gyms to return and for us to get something similar to HMs when we beat them, so that we can explore more of the world. i'm no fan of level scaling; it takes away from the feeling that you're constantly getting stronger. while we're at it, just ditch the whole open world idea. pokemon doesn't need to be open world.

It's too late for them to ditch open world, at least for this game. It's already confirmed to be open world. And if the game is as well received as LA, there's probably no going back period. Open world is just too popular and broadly appealing for them to ditch it for any reason other than low sales.

As far as taking away from the feeling of getting stronger, there are ways around it. Genshin Impact, for example, has a World Level system where you can level up your World Level by completing quests (and other activities such as finding treasure and hidden items), and the World Level will affect the level of enemies throughout the open world. There's also a mechanic where you can choose to decrease the World Level if the enemies get too strong for you. Pokemon could do something similar if you need to reverse the level scaling for whatever reason (although in Genshin's case, you could only lower the World Level by 1, Pokemon should let you lower it as much as you want).

Well, these games will be open world whether we like it or not, so we may as well put forward ideas that work in that format. I'm also not of the opinion that Pokemon needs to be open world, but well, that's what we're getting, so I figure it's best to keep an open mind.

Now that gyms are confirmed, I'm really hoping that we'll get some version exclusive leaders like we did last gen. I'm assuming Grusha will be in both games since they announced him first and nothing indicated he'd only be in one game. But I do hope we'll be getting at least a couple of different leaders.

I've looked over the map and honestly, there are some locations where I could see a few types for the gym. So personally I'm hoping this will indicate different types across the versions. There's also a possibly that the map is only for one version, like with Galar we got Sword's map at the very beginning showing Bea and Gordie's gyms.

Yeah, the first city on the right can be both Grass and Fire if we look at the fields colors. Second city on the left (The bottom left one i mark as the second city), can be Ghost or Poison (Cuz its purple). The others are likely set in as types, due to the way the colors of the fields are.

Also, is there anyone else that finds the gym buildings really boring.
