If you've watched shows like Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2 or Full Metal Panic you'll know it's a very common trope in anime where the Girl beats up her Love Interest as a Comedic Gag.
It's not as big of a thing in anime nowadays as it used to be but obviously Misty was a product of her time

This episode had more to offer than I was expecting. Go actually battling a Pokémon to catch it (or at least doing something other than just throwing the Poké Ball), a Team Rocket battle with a certain degree of strategy involved, more character interactions like Ash and Koharu. Team Rocket were also decently written. This is how a standard Journeys episode should be IMO.
I also love little continuity nods like James saying it's been a while since they last sneaked into somewhere (which is true), and the Pokémon Center actually looking like it did back in the original series. I like having these subtle aknowledgements instead of just ignoring every detail and then making it up with explicit flashbacks or mentions.
