So... considering those 2 dudes didn't know what they were doing with the Z-move, i doubt they even have done a trial, which means the Z-Move shouldn't even work in the first place.

We do not know for sure. And hey, even if they haven't, Ash was able to use a Z-Move without passing a trial first, too.

I don't think it was any less devastating than any other Z-Move. The only thing was that the crystal broke afterwards, but that could've been Tapu Koko's doing.

All the SM kids completed a trial and they all needed to practice their Z-Moves. This doesn't indicate anything.

I wouldn't nessarily call this filler, as it has lots of buildup to the next episode, but yeah, definitely a very fine episode!

The ending was weird with Ash's next opponent being Volkner. They were in Sinnoh the previous two episodes and now they're going back? Feels the next episode should've been first, or this episode should've been before the two parter with Cresselia and Darkrai.

It was good it happened in Alola, since 1) it gives a good reason for Ash to retrieve his Z-Power Ring for the battle, and 2) the battle was scheduled to be one week away anyway.
