So what happens if you leave town without a starter pokémon in Sword and Shield? According to this video, I saw a player try to encounter pokémon without any of his own, but he couldn't find any. He later tried to battle a trainer, but the game crashed. And when he tries to go into the grass again, the game crashed again. So what would happen if you actually battle a pokémon or trainer without a pokémon of your own? Would you lose the battle instantly like in Colosseum and XD, or does the game just crash?

In most Pokemon games, you send out a placeholder Pokemon and you just lose the battle right away. Or send out a glitch Pokemon. In Gen two, though, a battle will act as though you just won it.

If you could actually battle a Pokemon or trainer without a Pokemon in SW/SH you'd probably just lose or the game would just crash. It's a failsafe, if anything, really. I do miss the day you'd send out an Invisible Shiny Bulbasaur when you tried to hack the game in a way to battle without any Pokemon, but those are truly the days of the past.
