I'm not sure of anything before gen.4. I cant remember. But in DPPt, I started with each of them (Chimchar in Pearl, Piplup in Diamond, Turtwig in Platinum)
In Soulsilver, I started with Totodile.
In White, I started with Snivy

I have everything but Black and Blue and I reset non-main-files a lot, so I've played through every starter at least once but Turtwig, Snivy, and Tepig. I never really liked Turtwig. :X I'll choose Snivy as a starter when I get Black, though.

It's usually hard for me to decide on any particular starter in most games, and if I have more than one version of the same region's game, I'll choose a different starter for that game.
