Week 366: The Wounded Pyroar

(real tale: The Wounded Lion)

"There was once a poor girl that wandered the world doing whatever work she could find--we'll call her Wendy." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "One day she arrived at a cottage near a great city, and asked if they could give her any work for the day. The farmer said he was looking for someone to look after the cattle, so he gladly hired Wendy."

He continues "One morning, as she was driving the Miltanks to pasture, she heard a loud groan that almost sounded human. She hurried to the place the noise came from, and found a male Pyroar lying on the ground. Wendy was afraid at first, but it looked like the Pyroar was in pain. She was a kind young lady, so she decided to see what was bothering the Pyroar. It turned out the Pyroar had a large thorn stuck in one paw. Wendy gently pulled out the thorn, then cleaned and dressed the wound. The Pyroar was grateful for her help, and showered her with lots of Pyroar kisses."

"Aw"s fill the auditorium at this, but Brock intones "As Wendy was busy tending to the Pyroar, the Miltanks had wandered off. She looked all across the plains, but never found them. Her master was angry at this, and shooed Wendy away."

Some angry murmurs fill the air as Brock continues "As Wendy cried beneath a tree, she spotted a handsome young man coming down the path. When he had almost reached the tree, he pulled aside a rock and disappeared behind it."

He smiles. "Wendy couldn't believe her eyes! She promised herself that she would not move until she knew who the young man was."

Intrigued murmurs go up as Brock explains "She waited all night, and at dawn the next morning the rock moved to one side and a Pyroar came out. When he had disappeared, Wendy climbed down from the tree and went to the rock. She pushed it aside, and entered the opening before her."

The lights dim a little, creating the illusion Brock is underground. "The underground path led to a beautiful house. She went in, swept and dusted the furniture, and washed the clothes and the dishes. Then she ate dinner, and retreated to her tree."

The lights brighten as Brock continues "As the sun set, she saw the same young man. Like before, he pushed aside the rock and disappeared behind it. The Pyroar came the next morning. He looked around him for a minute or two, and then vanished into the forest. Wendy left the tree and returned to the underground house to clean it."

He continues "Three days passed like this. Eventually, Wendy found she was no closer to discovering the truth. She decided to get the story direct from the Ponyta's mouth."

The audience whispers excitedly as Brock continues "The young man looked pleased to see her, and said he figured she was the one who had kept his house clean for so long."

He then reveals the truth about the young man. "He explained that his name was Leo. He was a prince under a powerful giant's spell. This was why he was a Pyroar by day, and human by night. He added that the giant had stolen the Miltanks in revenge for her kindness."

"What can I do to break the spell?" he asks in a mimic of Serena for Wendy.

As himself, he narrates "Leo told Wendy that the only way to break the spell was to get a lock of hair from a princess' head. Next, she had to make a cloak for the giant, who lived up on the top of a high mountain."

"Very well. I will go to the royal city, and ask the princess to hire me as a servant." he vows as Wendy, to some light applause.

He continues as himself "With that, they parted. When she arrived in the royal city she asked around at all the worker's guilds. Although many people wanted to hire her, Wendy rejected every offer. Eventually, the princess' lady in waiting came. She offered to hire Wendy as a kitchen maid, and Wendy agreed. Wendy grew to be well loved and well liked in the palace. Before long, word of her kindness and skill came to the royal ears of the princess, Aurelia."

Applause goes up in approval of the princess' name. "Princess Aurelia summoned Wendy, and asked her to brush her hair." Brock explains. "Now, Princess Aurelia's hair was very thick and long, and nearly reached the floor in a long golden wave. Wendy combed it until it was brighter than ever. This pleased Princess Aurelia, and she appointed Wendy as one of her ladies. Every morning, Wendy brushed Princess Aurelia's hair until it shone."

He smiles. "One day, Wendy worked up the courage to ask permission to cut one of the long, thick locks."

He next explains "Now, Princess Aurelia was very proud of her hair. Of course, she didn't like the idea of cutting it, so she said no. But Wendy didn't lose hope, and every day she asked to cut just one golden strand."

"You may have it, on the condition that you find the handsomest prince in the world to marry me!" he demands in a mimic of Misty for Princess Aurelia.

As himself, he continues "Wendy gave her word, and cut a suitable strand. Next, she wove it into a coat that glittered like silk, and brought it to Leo. Leo instructed her to carry it straight to the giant's cave. He warned her to be careful to call out what she had with her, lest the giant kill her."

Worried whispers fill the room as Brock continues "So Wendy traveled far, and climbed up the mountain. But before she reached the top, the giant heard her footsteps. He rushed out breathing fire and smoke, wielding a huge greatsword. But she cried that she had brought him the coat. This calmed the giant, and he invited her to come into his house. He tried on the coat, and it fit perfectly. He was well pleased, and asked her what he could give her in return. Wendy replied that the only reward he could give her was to restore Prince Leo to his true form."

The audience waits to see how the giant will react, but Brock goes on "For a long time the giant would not hear anything of it, but in the end he caved, and told her exactly what to do. She was to lay his hands on his fur and beseech Arceus directly with the Swanna's song."

"Oh"s go up as Brock sighs "But she left that place in tears, fearful of what the spell would do. Who was she to think that she could die by singing that song?"

He continues "She came down the mountain, and rejoined the prince, who was waiting for her at the bottom. When he had heard her story he comforted her, and told her to do what the giant said--everything would be okay in the end. In the morning, when he returned to the form of a Pyroar, form she laid her hands on his fur and sang the following..."

He then sings in character as Wendy Gatrandis favel, secret, edena...
Emusto ronzen fine el balaziis...
Katoradis favel siicletu edena..
Emusto koron zen fine, si...

Applause goes up as the last note fades away. "On the last 'si', there was a bright flash of light, and the prince emerged in his true form." Brock explains. "Prince Leo thanked Wendy for all she had done for him, and told her she would be his bride and none other. Wendy protested at first, and told Prince Leo about the promise she made to Princess Aurelia."

He then reveals the twist in the tale. "So they went together to the royal palace. When the king, the queen, and Princess Aurelia saw the young man, they recognized him immediately. Princess Aurelia explained that Prince Leo was her long lost elder brother, who she had long feared dead."

More applause fills the air at this. "Prince Leo explained everything to his parents and his sister, and they all agreed Wendy would be the rightful bride."

He concludes "And so it was that Wendy and Prince Leo were married in a beautiful wedding. The festivities lasted six months in all, and many were the minstrel's songs in praise of the young couple."

He smiles at the enthralled crowd. "As far as I know, they still reign over that land today."

"Aw"s and applause fill the air as Brock takes a bow...

Week 367: The Tale of Peakoa

(real tale: Bearskin)

Some "Oh"s go up as Ash and Misty arrive with Brock on the stage, all three in Alolan shirts. "Once a great king was traveling across what is today Alola, but he and his party were so far away from home that they had to stop at a mill for the night, because there was no town or city to be found." Brock begins. "As they had dinner, they heard the sound of a baby crying in the next room. The miller stood in the corner, his back to the stove, with his hat in his hand."

"What is that noise?" he asks in a gentle older voice for the king.

"It is another baby that the nui ali'i has blessed this house with." he sighs as an older man for the miller.

"That means 'the great chief' if you don't speak Native Alolan." Ash interjects.

"Now, there was a wise man, a great sage, traveling along with the king, who could read the stars and everything that they told as easily as the ABC's." Brock continues as himself. "The king, as a joke, decided to have him find out what the stars had to say about the miller's baby. So the sage went out and looked in the sky, and a few moments later, he came in again."

"What did the stars tell you?" he asks as the king.

"The stars tell me that you will have a daughter, and that the miller's son will marry her when they come of age." he replies in an older form of Prof. Oak for the astrologer.

As himself, Brock continues "The king did not take this very well. So, the next day, the miller was paid two hundred gold pieces, and the king rode off with the baby. As soon as he came home to the castle he called his chief huntsman to him. He ordered the baby killed, and its heart brought back as proof."

Gasps fill the air, but Brock quickly assures the audience "The huntsman was a kind person, and thought long and hard about his predicament. On the one hand, an order was an order, and he had to do what the king said. But on the other hand, killing an innocent baby when its only crime was living would surely anger the Tapu, and the nui ali'i." He remembered his wife was a wise and kind woman, so he decided to ask her what to do. So he went home to his wife, and explained the situation to her."

"Such a harsh order!" Misty gasps as the wife. "Why does an innocent like this deserve a cruel fate? I have a better idea--remember the Buneary you caught this morning? A Buneary heart is the same size is a human baby's heart, so the king will not know the difference."

"With that, the huntsman returned to the king with the Buneary's heart, and the king was none the wiser." Brock picks up the tale again. "Meanwhile, the huntsman's wife gently set the baby in a floating basket, and sent it down the river, in hopes someone would find it and give the baby the love and care it needed. The basket drifted on and on down the river, until it washed up among the reeds that grew along the bank. An Ursaring named Lokomai came to the river, and she discovered the basket. She felt sorry for the apparently abandoned human child, and decided to raise the baby as if it was one of her own cubs, naming it Peakoa, which means 'Ursaring-hero' in Native Alolan."

The audience applauds in approval of the name. "Peakoa grew up into a strong young man--he was ten times stronger than the strongest man in the world." Brock continues, to some "wow"s and awed chatter. "One day, as he was walking through the forest, he came across a woodcutter cutting trees--the first time he had seen a human like him up close. When he asked his adopted mother Lokomai what he had seen, Lokomai told him..."

"That is the most wicked and most cruel of all the creatures of the world." Misty growls in older female voice for Lokomai.

"That may be true, and it may not be true." Ash protests as Peakoa. "But all the same, I feel like it is my calling to be among those creatures. I have long desired to go out into the wild world, and find others like me."

"If you want to go out into the wild world, I won't try to stop you--you may well yet convince me that not all humans are cunning and cruel." Misty smiles as Lokomai. "Remember that the ways of the world are not as peaceful and simple as they are here in the forest."

She then presents Ash with a familiar silver trumpet. "Take this horn--If you ever need anything, just blow it, and I will come to help you, no matter where in the world you are."

The lights go down, leaving Brock in a spotlight. "And so, Peakoa ventured out into the world, with only an Ursaring-skin coat for clothing--so everyone affectionately called him 'Ursaring-skin'. He walked along the road, until he came to the king's castle, unaware that the one on the throne was the same person that had tried to kill him years before."

He explains to the crowd "Now, the king's royal Tepig-herd was in need of a servant, and so he immediately hired Peakoa. All he had to do was help drive the Tepigs into the forest, and bring them back safely at sunset."

Intrigued murmurs fill the auditorium as Brock continues "One day, there was a great uproar in the royal city. Peakoa asked what had happened, and the Tepig-herd explained that a terrifying Kommo'o--a powerful dragon Pokemon native to Alola--had threatened to lay waste to all Alola, unless the princess Kalea was given to him. Despite the king's pleas to spare his only daughter, this was the day that the Kommo'o was to come for her."

"Is there no one on the islands that is brave enough to face that Pokemon? I will go myself, and rescue the lady Kalea." Ash vows as Peakoa, to cheers as he turns his cap back for effect.

"Despite his master's pleas, Peakoa meant every word of what he had said, and so he was allowed to go." Brock continues, aware of Ash hurrying to retrieve the trumpet from the wings. "Peakoa left the city, and traveled to a nearby plain where no one would find him. Once sure he had not been followed, and no one could see him, he took the horn Lokomai had given him..."

Some in the audience jump as Ash plays a trumpet call for effect. "Lokomai arrived in moments--for the Tapu had blessed her with magical power--and asked her adopted son what he needed." Brock narrates as Misty arrives and pantomimes asking Ash the question.

"I need a fine Ponyta, a suit of gold and silver armor that nothing can pierce, and a sword that can cut through iron and steel; for I am going up on the hill to fight the Kommo'o and free the princess Kalea." Ash explains, to excited cheers.

"Very well--you will find what you need behind that tree over there." Misty points off towards the wings at stage left, where the rest of their props are waiting.

"Sure enough, Peakoa found the divine steed Epona waiting for him, as well as a suit of gold and silver armor and a sword fit for a king." Brock continues. "So he put on the armor and mounted Epona, and off he rode to the high hill. Before long, Princess Kalea and her steward came to the high hill where the Kommo'o's cave stood But the steward stayed at the bottom of the hill, for he was afraid, and so Princess Kalea had to climb it alone, though she could hardly see the road before her, she cried so hard. But when she reached the top of the hill she found a fine fellow dressed in gold and silver armor."

Some "ooh"s and "ah"s fill the air as Ash arrives in a costume similar to what Brock described. "Alola. Dry your eyes and cry no more; I have come to rescue you." he assures a "crying" Misty. "Hide in the bushes over there, and I will deal with the Kommo'o."

Misty hurries offstage and the lights go down as Brock continues "Princess Kalea eagerly retreated into the bushes, and Peakoa waited for the Kommo'o to come. He did not have to wait for very long; for it soon came flying through the air, so that the wind rang with the sound of his scales. "

The sound effect of Kommo'o scales ringing plays for effect. "The battle was a very long and drawn out affair, but it was well worth seeing, and that you may believe." Brock smiles. "The Kommo'o spat out white hot fire and smoke, and it looked like the hill itself was burning. But he could do no harm to Peakoa, for the gold and silver armor protected him so well that not so much as a single hair on his head was singed. Peakoa kept fighting, until finally the mighty Pokemon was slain."

Cheers go up as the lights come up on Ash inspecting a "dead" Kommo'o doll. "He took a sapphire that was hidden in the Kommo'o's cheek, as a battle trophy, and put it in a bag for safekeeping." Brock narrates." Princess Kalea emerged from the brush, and begged Peakoa to go back with her to the castle, for the king had said that if anyone killed the Kommo'o, he would have her for a bride. Peakoa replied he had other things to do, so Princess Kalea give him her favorite emerald ring, and a kiss on the cheek as thanks."

"Aw"s fill the room as Misty does this to Ash. "Of course, Peakoa's master did not believe him when he said the Kommo'o was slain." Brock interjects as the lights go down. Meanwhile, the steward came up the hill to see what had happened, and there he found Princess Kalea safe and sound, and the Kommo'o dead. He forced Princess Kalea not to say a word about what had really happened, cut off the Kommo'o's head, and led Princess Kalea back to the castle. Once there, the steward claimed he had been the one that had slain the Kommo'o, and brought back its head as proof. As much as Princess Kalea wanted to tell her father what had really happened, she could not, out of fear of what the steward would do to her. And so wedding plans were made."

Angry murmurs waft down the rows as Brock continues "Before long, the wedding day came, and Peakoa wanted some of the food from the wedding luau. The Tepig-herd laughed even more at this request, and thought Peakoa was out of his mind. But Peakoa persisted, and the Tepig-herd was forced to relent. Peakoa gave his master the emerald ring, and instructed him to everything he could to get it back to Princess Kalea--he had a plan to expose the steward for the fraud he was.

He smiles "Imagine Princess Kalea's shock when she saw her ring! She confided to the kitchen staff what had really happened, and a place for Peakoa was set at the table."

Ash--now back in his Alolan shirt--returns to the stage with the trumpet as Brock goes on "Meanwhile, Peakoa went to the plain where no one could see him, and played the magical horn again..."

Ash plays another trumpet call for effect, to excited cheers. "What is it?" Misty asks as she joins Ash in the role of Lokomai.

"I need a fine suit of clothes made of gold and silver cloth, and a Ponyta to ride to the castle, for I am going to marry Princess Kalea." Ash requests as Peakoa.

"Everything he asked for was behind the tree, like before." Brock narrates as the lights go down again. "Imagine how the people stared when he rode up to the castle. The king assumed that Peakoa was some great lord. But Princess Kalea knew him the moment she saw him--the true hero!"

Cheers go up in agreement. "The king brought Peakoa into the dining hall, to the place the kitchen staff had prepared earlier." Brock explains. "Peakoa saw the steward was present, and during a lull in the festivities, he asked all that were present..."

"Suppose someone killed a Kommo'o and saved a princess, but then another came and claimed that he did it." Ash--now in the costume he requested--explains to the audience as Peakoa. "How should the false hero be punished?"

"The steward, believing this to be a thought exercise, replied that such a liar should be put in a cask full of nails, and dragged behind three wild Rapidashes." Brock narrates.

"You have pronounced your own sentence!" Ash announces. "For I killed the Kommo'o up on the hill, and you stole the glory of the deed."

"But, how?" Brock protests as the steward. "I cut off the Kommo'o's head--shouldn't that make me the hero?"

"But what else was in there that was not there when you cut off the head?" Ash shoots back.

"With that, he laid the sapphire on the table, to the astonishment of all. " Brock narrates as Ash does this. "The steward turned white as a Gastly as Princess Kalea told the crowd what had really happened."

Laughter fills the air at Misty doing this. "So when the wedding came it was Peakoa, and not the steward, who married Princess Kalea, with the entire city, Lokomai, the Tapu, and Arceus as their witnesses." Brock continues. The steward was punished as he deserved--he was put in a cask full of nails, and dragged behind three wild Rapidashes."

He concludes "As for the king, he was satisfied that the princess had married a great hero. But he never had any clue that Peakoa was the miller's son!"

The crowd laughs and applauds as the Trio takes a bow together...

Week 368a: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 1

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"There was once a king long ago who had two sons and a daughter old enough to have a child." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "One day, the daughter walked into her father's garden, where she saw a Leppa Berry tree with a single berry on it. As she was hungry, she ate the berry, thinking nothing of it."

Intrigued murmurs fill the auditorium at this. "The months went by, and the time came for the child to be born." Brock continues. "She gave birth to a son with shining gold hair, and a silver moon on his forehead. He was so beautiful not even all the Legendaries combined could compare. But something was different about the boy--he did not grow by years, but by minutes. He grew so quickly, that soon he was the same age as the king's sons, his siblings, and longed to be a great hero like his father."

"Wow"s go up at this. "One day, the two sons were contemplating where the most beautiful princess in the world was." Brock continues. "They discussed and debated the matter all day, and when evening came, they asked the the court wizard where the most beautiful lady in the world was. The court wizard was curious, and asked why they sought such a lady--they could find plenty of beautiful ladies right there at home. But the princes persisted, and so the court wizard said..."

"The most beautiful princess in the world is Eliana, the daughter of the king of the kingdom of the White Strand." he explains in a mimic of Prof. Oak for the court wizard. "Hundreds of heroes have died trying to win her; and I fear that if you embark on this quest, you will die too."

"We do not mind that; we will still go." he replies in a mimic of Gary for the eldest son.

As himself, Brock continues "The brothers had no vessel to take them to the kingdom of the White Strand; and since they knew nothing of shipbuilding, they wasted two days building nothing that even remotely resembled a ship."

Laughter goes up at this. "The following morning, the miracle child--whose name is not important to us just yet--said..." Brock narrates

"Give me the tools, and let me try." he requests in a mimic of Ash for the hero.

"How do you expect to succeed where your brothers have failed?" he gasps as the king.

"That doesn't matter--I KNOW I can succeed!" he replies as his hero, to cheers.

As himself, Brock narrates "He left the castle; and the voice of Arceus spoke to him, just as he had spoke to his brothers..."

"What are you going to do, Brian of the Leppas?" he asks in a mimic of Arceus.

"I am going to build a ship." he replies as Ash for Brian.

"So may it be."he smiles as Arceus.

As himself, Brock continues "He went off to the edge of a forest near the shore, and with every tree he cut down, it went to its proper place in the vessel. By the time evening came, Brian had the nicest ship that had ever sailed the sea. When the two brothers saw the ship in the harbor, they were delighted to see the fine vessel, as they themselves could not build it. Arceus had built it with Brian in return for his telling the truth."

Applause goes up at this. "The next morning, enough provisions to last for a year and a day were placed in the cargo hold." Brock explains. "The two princes went on board, set the sails, and were moving out towards the sea, forgetting all about Brian. Try as his parents might to convince him to stay home, Brian would not take no as an answer!"

"Well, what I have not done for another I will do now for you. I will give you my sword; and you will never be defeated by anyone while you wield that blade." he assures someone as the king.

He continues as himself "Brian left the castle, where he saw the ship was outside the harbor already. He ran to the edge of the harbor, placed the hilt of his sword on the edge of the shore, and managed to make a flying leap aboard. The two princes were amazed when they saw what their brother had done, and were happy to have him with them."

Applause goes up at this. "What adventures awaited Brian of the Leppas? I will tell you more next week!" Brock assures the crowd.

Week 368b: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 2

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"After a week, they came to a place where no wave lapped the shore, no wind rocked the trees, no sun to light it--not even a Murkrow landed there." Brock continues as he arrives onstage. "They weighed anchor there, promising to return in a year and a day--never mind they would only be back in an hour."

Giggles go up at the snarky comment. "On the following day they saw a forest that stretched as far as the eye could see." Brock explains. "The eldest son volunteered to go inside and explore first, but before long, came running back in terror. Then the middle son went, but he fared no better. Brian, meanwhile, bade his brothers farewell, and entered the forest. It was not long until he saw the flashing lights. He did not mind them, but went forward; and when he had gone a good distance, he found the trees farther apart and scattered. Leaving the trees, he came out onto a broad, open plain; in the middle of the plain was a castle; in front of the castle twelve heroes were sparring with all manner of weapons. He realized that the flashes from the blades clashing and ranged weapons flying were the flashing lights his brothers had seen."

"Oh"s go up at this. "By the side of the path there was a small hut, and as he was passing the door, an old woman came out, and called to him. He turned, and she said..."

"A hundred thousand welcomes to you, Brian of the Leppas." he smiles in a gentle female voice for the old woman.

"Well, good woman, you know me; but how do I know you?"he asks as Brian.

"I know you well, and I fear for you now that you are here." he explains as the woman. "Do you see those twelve men out there? You are going to meet them; but rest here, and let the dawn of another day come to you."

As himself, Brock continues "Brian went inside, and the old woman prepared him a fine meal and a fine bed. When the day dawned, he rose, got ready, and commended his spirit to Arceus. The old woman prepared breakfast in the best way she could, and it was a fine way. He went off in good spirits to the castle."

He explains "Now, there was a pole of combat in front of the castle which someone wanting to battle--regardless if it was a battle with weapons, a battle with Pokemon or other creatures, a battle with wits, or a battle of skill--would strike. Our hero struck the pole so hard, it was heard throughout the whole kingdom. The king peeked out the window, and saw Brian outside.

Nervous giggles fill the air at this. "Now, around the rear of the castle was a high wall set with iron spikes, with the skull of a monster adorning each one." Brock goes on. "It was a terrifying sight to see; and struck fear in even the bravest of heroes."

"What do you want?" he sighs as the king, to some laughter.

"Your daughter as my bride, or battle." he counters as Brian, to some cheers.

As himself, he continues "The king decreed that Brian was to battle; and the twelve heroes from before charged forth to meet him together. It was a very long and drawn out battle, but by the time the dust settled at dusk, Brian was victorious!"

Cheers go up at this. "He left the palace wounded and weary from the fight, and went back to the old woman's cabin." Brock explains. "She was happy to see him, and rubbed a healing balm on his wounds that made him good as new, as if the battle had never happened."

"May Arceus grant you victory and prosperity, brave one." he smiles as the woman. "I think you will do something good; for the twelve heroes you defeated were the strongest and the best of all the king's forces. You have done more than anyone that ever passed this way before."

He continues as himself "They then had dinner for the night, enjoyed each other's company in story and in song, and finally went to bed for the night with joyful hearts."

Brock looks out on the enthralled crowd with a grin. "But Brian's adventure was only getting started--I will tell you more next week!"

Week 368c: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 3

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"The next morning, he returned to the castle, and struck the pole again." Brock continues as he arrives on the stage.

"What do you want?"he sighs as the king, to some laughter.

"Seven hundred men at my right hand, seven hundred at my left, seven hundred behind me, and as many as on the three sides out before me." he requests as Brian.

As himself, Brock narrates the play-by-play. "Twenty eight hundred heroes in all were sent to him through four gates. He went through them like a Talonflame capturing its prey, and easily defeated them all. And oh, how the king trembled when he saw all twenty-eight hundred defeated by an army of one!"

Applause goes up at this. "Meanwhile, Brian returned to the old woman's cabin." Brock continues when the applause quiets.

"Victory and prosperity to you, Brian." he smiles as the woman. "You have all his forces stretched thin, unless he comes out against you himself. I'm sure that he will not, if he values his life. He'll give you Princess Eliana."

He narrates as himself "She fed him a good dinner. He had fought so well, there was not a wound in sight. He had not let a single one the forty two hundred heroes come within arm's length of his body. He spent the night as before."

"Wow"s fill the auditorium at this. "The next morning, he went to the castle, and with one blow made pencil shavings out of the combat pole." Brock continues, to laughter. "The king went down to Brian, led him up to the high chamber where Princess Eliana was, and put her hand in his. Princess Eliana kissed Brian, embraced him, and gave him a ring with her name on it. This was enough for a marriage ceremony."

"Aw"s go up at this. "The next day Brian, thinking that his brothers had returned home, said to the king..." Brock narrates

"I will visit my brothers, and then return here." he explains as Brian, before role-playing the conversation himself:

"Something else is troubling me now. There are three giants, neighbors of mine, and they are notorious rogues and thieves. I fear that before a day passes the giants will come and throw me out of the kingdom."

"Well, I will not leave you until I rid you of the giants. Tell me where they are now."

As himself, Brock continues "The king told Brian everything he had to do. Brian first went to the house of the youngest giant. He struck the combat pole so hard, the sound was heard over all that giant's kingdom."

"A nerve burning of the heart to you, you miserable wretch! Great was your impudence to come to my castle at all." he growls as the giant.

"I do not come to give you pleasure, but to knock a tormenting satisfaction out of your ribs." he shoots back as Brian, to cheers.

"All right, do you wish to fight by fist or by sword?" he requests as the giant.

"By sword." he confidently replies as Brian.

As himself, Brock continues "So the giant put on a suit of iron armor that had seen many a battle. Then he took his pale-red shield and his spear. Brian, meanwhile, slipped on some fine leggings and boots. He next put on a suit of crystal mail which three craftsmen had made. As his side was his sword. It was an enchanted blade that would not leave a remnant uncut. If it did, what it left at the first blow it took at the second. He swore a solemn vow to always maintain the spirit of light. In this vow he promised to fight for justice and resist evil in whatever form it presented itself."

He looks out at the excited crowd. "How did the battle turn out? I will tell you more next week!"

Week 368d: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 4

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"They charged like two wild Tauros." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "They made sand out of the rock, and rock out of the sand. They made hills out of the mountains, and mountains out of the hills. They made whirling circles in the earth, and fire in the sky. If anyone were to come from another world, it was to see those two."

"Wow"s and awed whistles fill the auditorium as the crowds picture the fight in their minds. "They were at this until the height of the evening." Brock explains. "By then, Brian was growing hungry. He mustered one last burst of courage, and with one stroke of his sword cut off the giant's head."

Cheers fill the air at the giant's demise. "As he approached the castle with the giant's head, he met a man tied up in a tree--his name is not important to us yet." Brock continues.

"Victory and prosperity to you, young hero." he smiles in an older version of himself for the man. "You have done well so far; now release me from this."

"How long have you been there?" he asks as Brian.

"Seven years." he replies as the man.

He interjects as himself "Brian felt a sick feeling in his stomach. Something didn't feel right about this captive."

"Many a man passed this way during that time. As none of them released you, I see no reason why I should release you." he smirks as Brian, to some laughter.

As himself, Brock goes on "He returned home, and threw down the head by the side of the castle. The head was so heavy, the castle shook to its foundations. The king came to the hall-door, shook Brian's hand, and kissed him. They spent that night like the previous night."

He continues "The next day he went to meet the second giant, came to his house, and struck the combat pole."

"You rascal, I wager it was you who killed my younger brother yesterday. You'll pay for it now, but I do not know the best way to kill you." he growls as the giant.

"I do not come to offer my life, but to give you the same judgement as your brother." he retorts as Brian, to excited cheers

"How should we battle? By fist or by sword?"

"By fist--I have practiced many a martial art!"

Brock proceeds to demonstrate some martial arts moves of his own as he narrates the battle. "With that, they grabbed each other, and went at it in a grand display of martial arts. They made rock out of the sand, and sand out of the rock. They brought forth water through the ground. This created a small swamp, and before long, the giant was sinking. Brian then grabbed him."

"Please! Spare me, and I will give you my treasure room, and all that I have." he pleads as the giant.

"If I were in your place, and you in mine, would you let me go free?" he asks as Brian.

"No." he replies as the giant.

As himself, Brock continues "Brian drew his sword; and with one blow he took the two heads off the giant, and carried the heads to the castle. He passed by the hanging man, who asked him to release him; but he refused. When Brian threw the heads down, much as the castle shook the first day, it shook more the second."

He smiles "The king and Princess Eliana were elated. They showered him with kisses, drowned him with happy tears, and dried him with silk and satin. They gave him the taste of every food and drink, and passed that night as the night before. The next morning, Brian was very tired and weary after two days of fighting, and the third giant's land was far away."

"Have you a Ponyta of any kind for me to ride?" he asks as Brian.

"There is a mare in my stable whose fur shines like the moon. If you think you can ride that Ponyta, you may take her." he offers as the king.

As himself, Brock announces "So Brian went to the stable. The Ponyta in question was none other than the Ponyta of legend, Epona!"

Excited cheers go up at this. "Brian bridled and saddled her, her silvery fur and sapphire flames lighting up the sky." Brock continues. "He now went on, and could overtake the wind that was before him. The wind that was behind could not overtake him."

He looks out at his enthralled audience. "How did our hero's third match go? And who was that hanging man, anyway? I will tell you that and more next week!"

Week 368e: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 5

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"Brian never stopped until he arrived at the giant's castle; and this giant had three heads." Brock intones as he arrives onstage. "He dismounted, and struck the pole so hard, it rang throughout the kingdom. The giant looked out, and said..."

"Oh, you villain! I'll wager it was you that killed my two brothers. It is enough to see you; but I don't know how I should kill you." he growls as the giant.

"It is not to give satisfaction to you that I am here, you vile worm!" he retorts as Brian. "Ugly is the smile of your laugh; and it must be that your crying will be uglier still."

"All right...do you prefer to battle by fist or by sword?" he asks as the giant.

He draws a prop sword before replying as Brian "By sword."

As himself, Brock proceeds to pantomime fight an imagined opponent as he speaks. "With that, they charged at each other like two wild Tauros. Toward the end of the afternoon, the heavier blows were falling on Brian. Just then, a Fletchling landed on a bush in front of him, and said..."

"Oh, Brian of the Leppas! Far away are you from the women who would cry for you!" he sighs in a mimic of Serena for the Fletchling. "There would be no one to care for you unless I were to put two leaves on your eyes to protect them from the Murkrows. Stand between the sun and the giant."

As himself, he resumes his pantomime fight. "Brian followed the Fletchling's advice. The two combatants kept at it; but the giant had to bend often to look at his foe. One time, when he stretched forward, his helmet lifted a little. Brian got a glimpse of his neck, near the ear. He got him at that moment."

Cheers go up as Brock delivers a spin attack to his imagined opponent. "Then Brian cut the three heads off him, and carried them home on the pommel of his saddle." he continues as he sheathes his weapon. Brian then went to the castle. He found the king sitting by the table. His head was in his hands, and a stream of tears flowed from the table to the floor."

"What's the matter, milord?" he asks as Brian.

"Someone named Willow came, claimed he was the one who killed the giant; and took Eliana." he sighs in feigned sadness as the king.

He explains as himself "Brian put two and two together. Someone had released the one called Willow, and he was to blame for the king's sadness. He vowed he would go to the ends of the world for his beloved Eliana."

"Oh"s go up as Brock continues "The next morning the king brought a table-cloth, and said..."

"You may often need food, and not know where to find it. Wherever you spread this and invoke it, what food you need will be there." he explains as the king, showing off a prop tablecloth to his audience.

He continues "Brian accepted the mystical cloth, learned the words to invoke it, and set out. He traveled all day, and at nightfall came to a sheltered spot, where he saw the remains of a campfire. After a few minutes he pulled out the tablecloth, invoked it..."

After hiding his Mega Ring under the tablecloth he sings as Brian Imultaos, ame no hao bakezo.... making his Mega Ring glow and making the tablecloth glow green.

He smiles. "...and a feast fit for a king appeared."

Awed murmurs fill the air at the glowing tablecloth. "As he ate, an Arcanine approached the camp." Brock goes on.

"Traveler, do you have anything that you would give me to take to my children? For three days I have not been able to find any food for them." he asks in a gentle older female voice for the Arcanine.

"Come, eat what you like, and take what you can." he smiles as Brian.

"Thank you, traveler. You are not like the thief that was here three nights ago." he explains as the Arcanine. "When I asked him for help, he threw a log at me, and almost broke my shoulder. Sad was the lady who was with him; she ate no food and drank no drink the whole night, but was shedding tears. If ever you are in danger, and need my help, call for Anya, the Guardian of Tranamee, and I will come to help you."

"Please, stay with me. I am alone, and you may take what food you can carry as payment." he requests as Brian.

As himself, Brock continues "So Anya kept watch for Brian as thanks for the food she received, She also taught him the words to call her. Brian was in high spirits the next morning from the news about his wife. He journeyed all day, thinking he would reach Willow's castle that evening; but it was still far away. He came to another clearing, and made camp there. As he ate his dinner, a Pidgeot landed on a branch, and asked...

He performs the whole rigamarole again, using a powerful female voice for the Pidgeot. "Traveler, have you any food for me to give my children?"

"Come, eat what you like, and take what you can."

"Thank you, traveler. this is not how I was treated by the thief who was here three nights ago. When I asked him for food, he flung a log at me, and almost broke my wing."

"Please, stay with me tonight."

He interjects as himself "So the Pidgeot kept watch that night."

"If you ever need help, you have only to call for Mina, the Guardian of the Cold Cliff, and I will come." he explains as the Pidgeot.

He continues as himself "After Mina had taught Brian the words to call her, they parted. Brian's spirits were so high, he passed a mountain in a leap, a valley in a step, and a field in a hop. He made camp in a glen near a stream. As he ate dinner, a Floatzel approached the camp from the water."

Brock performs the rigamarole a third time, using a breathy female voice for the Floatzel. "Traveler, have you any food for me to give my children?"

"Come, eat what you like, and take what you can."

"Thank you, traveler. When you need help, call on Celes of the Misty Pool, and I will come. You are not like the thief who was here three nights ago, having your wife with him. She cried all night with tears, and did not eat or drink. You will reach Willow's castle tomorrow at noon. It whirls around like a wheel, and no one can enter but him; for the castle itself is magical."

He looks out on his enthralled audience. "What wonders and terrors lay within the enchanted castle? I will tell you more next week!"

Week 368f: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 6

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"Brian reached the castle at noon." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "He stood looking at the castle for some time. When the window revealing Princess Eliana came by, she saw him. She signaled that she could see him, and told him to go. She thought that no one could defeat Willow; rumors said that no one could kill him."

He takes a few steps back as he narrates "Brian took a few steps back, and leaped inside."

Applause fills the auditorium as Brock effortlessly jumps across the stage. "Princess Eliana had made Willow promise to leave her alone for a year and a day.. She knew when he would be coming home, and when that time approached, she hid Brian under the bed."

He reminds the audience "Keep in mind that Brian and Princess Eliana were planning to kill Willow once and for all. The problem was, no one had a clue how to do it. After some debate and discussion, they agreed that the best way to find Willow's weakness was ask Willow himself."

"It is a wonder that a great man like you travels alone; my father always takes guards with him." he explains as Princess Eliana.

"I need no guards; no one can kill me." he explains as Willow, roleplaying the entire scene himself:

"How is that?"

"Oh, my life is in that block of wood over there."

"If it is there, it is in a strange place; and it is little trouble you take for it. You should put it somewhere secure."

"Where it is now is good enough."

As himself, Brock narrates "The next day, Princess Eliana told Brian all she had heard."

"His life is not there. Try again tonight." he interjects as Brian.

As himself, Brock continues "So Princess Eliana searched the whole castle. She decorated the block of wood with whatever silk and jewels she could find. When Willow returned that evening, and saw the block, he laughed."

"What's so funny?" he asks as Princess Eliana.

"That you believed what I said. My life is not there." he grins as Willow.

"I did not think you would make fun of me. You know that I love you, and why did you trick me?" he gasps as Princess Eliana.

He interjects as himself "Willow was glad to hear this. He took her to the window, and, pointing to a large tree, he asked..."

"Do you see that tree?" he asks as Willow.

"I do." he replies as Princess Eliana.

"Do you see that axe under my bedpost?" he asks as Willow. "I can't die until a hero splits the tree in half. Out of the tree a Gogoat will rush forth, and nothing on earth can come up with the Gogoat but Anya of Tranamee. When the Gogoat is caught, he will drop a Ducklett. The Ducklett will fly out on the sea, and nothing on earth can catch it but Mina of the Cold Cliff. When the Ducklett is caught, she will drop an egg into the sea. Nothing on earth can find that egg but Celes of the Frothy Pool. Once the egg is found, the hero must smash it on the ground. to kill me. But I doubt any hero can do all that."

He grins. "Or maybe someone could...I will tell you how Brian did all that and more next week!"

Week 368g: The Tale of Brian of the Leppas, part 7

(real tale: The Kingdom of the White Strand)

"Brian departed the next morning." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "He took the axe, and with one blow split the tree in half; releasing the Gogoat. Brian rushed after him through the fields until he was exhausted. Only then did he remember Anya..."

He pauses to sing as Brian Jao wiisha nes chiel com yutuul..., to some cheers from the front rows.

As himself, he continues "Anya caught the Gogoat in a moment. This released a Ducklett, and away she flew over the sea. Brian called for Mina of the Cold Cliff...

He sings as Brian again Karuto, iichiida shou...

Once the cheers quiet, Brock continues as himself "Mina got the Ducklett; and it dropped an egg. Brian next summoned Celes of the Frothy Pool...

He sings as Brian again Rou iitsa on selga vichii...

The auditorium rings with applause. "Celes brought the egg to him in minutes." Brock explains when the applause quiets. "Brian took the egg, and ran to the castle, which was whirling no more. He opened the door, and smashed the egg on the ground; killing Willow."

The crowd roars at Willow's demise, but Brock next reveals a twist in the tale. "It turned out Anya, Mina, and Celes were really three daughters of the king Willow had captured. They returned to their true forms again, and all rejoiced."

Intrigued murmurs fill the room as Brock continues "Brian did not stay there long. He left the three sisters in their own castle and kingdom."

"If ever you need my help, send for me at my father-in-law's." he offers as Brian.

He concludes "He spent a night at every spot he had stopped at along the way. Brian returned to his father's kingdom, where he and Princess Eliana lived happily for a long time."

"Aw"s and applause go up as Brock takes a bow...

Week 369a: The Star Boy (part 1)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"In a certain land lived the seven daughters of poor parents." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Every day, they would come to play under the shady trees in the royal garden with the gardener’s daughter, Salvia. And every day she would tell them..."

“When I am married I will have a child unlike any other." he explains in character as a young girl. "If it is a boy, he will have a golden star on his forehead. If it is a girl, she will have a silver star."

He assures the crowd as himself "Her playmates would laugh at her and tease her, but it never bothered her."

He then intones "But one day, the king overheard her telling them about the miracle child she would have. He longed very much to have such a son or daughter."

Intrigued murmurs fill the auditorium as Brock explains "Now, in this land it was not unheard of for nobility and royalty to have more than one wife. The king was no exception--even though he had four queens, he had no child. He went to the gardener and told him he wished to marry Salvia. This delighted the gardener and his wife. They thought it would be grand for their daughter to become a princess. So they said yes to the king, and invited all their friends and relatives to the wedding. The king did likewise, and he gave the gardener as much money as he wanted. The wedding was held with great feasting and rejoicing."

Some in the audience start to applaud, but Brock is quick to remind them "But the story is far from over here."

He continues "A year went by, and the day the miracle child was foretold to be born drew near. The king’s four other queens often came to see Salvia. One day they said to her..."

“The king goes hunting every day; and the time is coming when you will have your child. Suppose you got sick while he was away--what would you do then?” he asks in a mimic of Jessie for one of the queens.

He interjects as himself "When the king came home that evening, Salvia said to him..."

“I've noticed that every day you go out hunting. If I was ever in trouble or sick while you are away, how could I call for you?” he asks in a mimic of May for Salvia as an older girl.

He then reveals a familiar frame drum to his audience. "The king gave her a small frame drum, which he placed near the door."

“Whenever you need me, play this drum." he explains as the king, gesturing to the frame drum and its stick by stage right. "No matter how far away I may be, I will hear it, and will come to you.”

Excited murmurs waft down the rows as Brock goes on "The next morning, his four other queens came to see Salvia. She told them all about her frame drum."

“Play it, and see if what the king claims is true.” he requests as one of the queens

“No--why should I call him when I do not need him to come?” he protests as Salvia.

Brock continues as himself "But the queens insisted she play the frame drum again and again."

Once he has drum and stick in hand, he interjects. "So she played it..."

The crowd listens in awe as Brock plays a beat on his own frame drum for effect. "...and the king stood before her." he interjects when the applause for his beat dies down.

“Why have you called me? Everything is well, and nothing is wrong.” he asks as the king.

“I only wanted to know if you would come to me when I played my frame drum.” he explains as Salvia as he puts the frame drum away.

“Very well, but do not call me again unless it is a real emergency.” he warns as the king, to nervous giggles.

As himself, Brock intones "Meanwhile, the four other queens came to her, and they said that it wass the custom before a child is born to blindfold its mother so she does not see it until it is born. Salvia agreed to this, and the four queens blindfolded her."

He looks out at his audience. "But this was only a setup for an evil plot...but what of Salvia's miracle child? I will tell you more next week!"

Week 369b: The Star Boy (part 2)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"Soon after this, the time came for the miracle child to be born." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Salvia welcomed a son, with a golden star on his forehead. Before she had a chance to see him, the four wicked queens took the boy to the nurse. They instructed her to kill him or take him somewhere far away."

Horrified gasps fill the auditorium, but Brock continues "When the king returned; he was saddened and furious at hearing Salvia had supposedly miscarried. He made her one of the palace servants, and never said a word to her."

He then assures the jittery audience "That night, the nurse took the box holding the miracle boy, and went into a forest. There she dug a hole, and put the box there. The king’s pet Arcanine, whose name was Anya, saw the whole thing. She felt sorry for the star boy, and raised him as if he was one of her own Growlithes. She named him Leo, after the constellation of the Pyroar."

"Oh"s waft down the rows as Brock explains "Anya was a Shiny Arcanine, which were considered holy in that land. Like all Shiny Pokemon, she at least had the ability to speak the human language, and taught Leo everything he had to know as a prince."

Brock continues "For a while, no one had any idea what was really going on. But one day, one of the queens happened to spot Leo walking outside. The four queens realized what had happened; but they also knew that Shiny Pokemon were considered holy. They obviously couldn't kill Anya, so they decided to kill Leo themselves. They agreed to carry out the deed at dawn."

Fearful murmurs fill the air, but Brock is quick to assure the audience "Anya heard every word of the queens' plot. During the night, she took Leo to a flowery plain, where the holy Ponyta Epona was known to graze. Epona happened to be there that day, and agreed to take Leo somewhere safe. Since the plains were enchanted, Anya would be safe there, too."

In a young female voice for Epona, he instructs an imagined person "Leo, go into the grove that leads out of here. There you will find a saddle and bridle; put them on me. You will also find some fine clothes. Put them on, and take the sword and bow you find too."

Excited murmurs fill the air at the mention of the weapons. "When all was ready, Epona galloped away." Brock continues. "When night came, they made camp under a tree. Epona grazed near the camp, and Leo hunted and gathered wild fruit from the jungle."

The lights dim to mimic evening. "They set out early the next morning, and traveled a long way. That evening, they came to another land." Brock continues.

“Unsaddle me and take off my bridle; take off your beautiful clothes and tie them all up in a bundle with your sword and bow." he instructs as Epona. "Hide this bundle in the grass, and I will take care of it for you. I will stay here on the plains, so when you want to see me, I will be here."

"But who will hire me here in this foreign land?" he asks in a mimic of Ash as Leo.

“Take heart--you will find work, and I will stay here to help you." he smiles as Epona.

As himself, he narrates "With that, Epona whispered an incantation that transformed her into a common Ponyta, and Leo into a common boy."

He smiles as he looks out at the audience. "What adventures awaited Leo in this foreign land? I will tell you more next week!"

Week 369c: The Star Boy (part 3)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"Our hero traveled further into the country, until he came to a grain merchant, who asked him who he was." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Leo explained that he was a poor boy seeking work. The grain merchant saw Leo was a fine young man, and hired him as a servant."

Intrigued murmurs fill the room. "Now, the grain merchant lived near the royal palace." Brock explains as he retrieves a pitch pipe from a pocket. "One night, at about midnight, Leo couldn't sleep. So he went out into the royal gardens and began to sing a song of his homeland."

After blowing an A note to establish his starting note, Brock proceeds to sing "Ah, Rosheen" in the original Gaelic for effect. The crowd is spellbound by Brock's distinct and powerful tenor ringing through the auditorium, never mind they can't understand a word of what Brock is singing.

When the applause for Brock's performance finishes, Brock goes on "The seventh and youngest daughter of the king--we'll call her Amy--heard him, and wondered who it was who could sing so beautifully. She got dressed, and came down to where the supposed common man was singing."

“Who are you? Where do you come from?” he asks in a mimic of May for Princess Amy.

He intones as himself "But Leo said nothing. 'Who is this man who does not answer when I speak to him?' Princess Amy thought. She decided to let the matter go for the moment, and returned to her room. The next night the same thing happened, and on the third night too. But on the third night, when Princess Amy found she could not make him answer her, she said to him..."

“What is it that compels you not to answer me when I speak to you?”he asks, his "May" voice gaining a note of frustration.

As himself, Brock continues "But still he remained silent, so she returned to her room. The next day, when he had finished his work, Leo returned to the jungle to see Epona, who asked him..."

“Are you happy where you are?” he asks as Epona.

“Yes, I am." he replies as Leo. "I was hired as a servant to a grain merchant. The last three nights I have gone into the royal garden and sang of my homeland. Every night the youngest princess has come to me and asked me who I am, and where I come from, and I have answered nothing. What do I do now?”

"The next time she asks you who you are, tell her you are a very poor man, and come from a distant land to find service here.” he instructs as Epona.

As himself, Brock continues "Leo returned to the grain merchant. That night, when everyone had gone to bed, he went to the royal garden and sang a new song."

After setting his pitch pipe and blowing an E note to establish the key he will be singing in, Brock sings a nonsense Gaelic melody for effect. The crowd listens, spellbound as Brock performs. They don't understand a word the master storyteller is singing to them, but the mystical words conjure a kind of mystical energy in the air.

When he finishes the song, Brock continues "Princess Amy heard him, got up, and came to him."

“Who are you? Where do you come from?”he asks as Princess Amy again.

“I am a poor man. I have journeyed from a distant land to seek service here, and I am one of the grain merchant’s servants.” he explains as Leo.

He continues as himself "For three more nights, Leo sang in the royal garden. Every night Princess Amy came and asked him questions about him and his homeland. Leo had an answer for them all, and it was not long before they were falling in love."

"Aw"s fill the air, but Brock is quick to remind the audience. "But as the youngest of seven sisters, there was likely to be jealousy, and a test or three to prove that Leo was indeed worthy of his bride. I will tell you what that entailed next week!"

Week 369d: The Star Boy (part 4)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"One day, Princess Amy told her father..." Brock begins.

“Father, I am aware the time has come for me to marry." he explains in character as Princess Amy. "But I wish to choose my husband myself.”

As himself, Brock continues "Her father said okay, and he invited all the kings, princes, emperors, and heroes of the world to visit the palace. A great many kings, emperors, princes, and heroes came. When they all were present, Princess Amy's father said to them..."

“Tomorrow morning you must all sit together in the royal garden." he explains in character as the king. "There, Amy will make her choice.”

He continues as himself "Princess Amy ordered a fine Rapidash to be ready for her the next morning. When the morning came, she dressed in her most beautiful clothes. Then she mounted her Rapidash, which wore blue and silver finery. She also took a gold necklace--this was how she would signal her choice."

Intrigued murmurs wafted down the rows as Brock went on "She went into the garden where all the guests waited. Leo was also in the garden, looking on with the other servants."

He walks around the stage as he continues "Princess Amy rode all around the garden. She carefully looked over all the kings, princes, emperors, and heroes present. After what felt like an eternity, she hung the gold necklace around Leo's neck."

Some start to applaud, but Brock has other ideas. "At this everybody howled with laughter, and many of the princes teased and taunted Leo. But Princess Amy lifted a hand to stop the screaming and teasing. She invited Leo aboard her Rapidash, and took him to the palace."

Enthusiastic applause fills the room. "The king and all the guests were very much astonished." Brock continues when the applause quiets. "Many of the visiting rulers wondered how a princess wished to marry what they thought was a poor man. Her father said to them all..."

“I promised my daughter she could marry anyone she wished." he explains as the king. "As she has chosen the common man, she will marry him.”

He smiles. "And so, Princess Amy and Leo were married in a grand wedding. Her parents were content with her choice. All the visiting rulers gave the young couple their fondest well-wishes; and many rare and fabulous gifts."

"Aw"s go up, but Brock is quick to remind the audience "But not all looked upon this union well...I will tell you how Leo overcame these challenges next week!"

Week 369e: The Star Boy (part 5)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"Now, Princess Amy's sisters had all married rich princes, and they laughed at her for choosing a common man." Brock begins. "Their husbands went hunting every day, and every evening brought back great quantities of meat. But Leo always stayed in the palace, and never went out hunting at all."

Intrigued murmurs fill the room. "One day, Princess Amy asked him..." Brock interjects.

“Why do you never go out hunting like my sisters’ husbands?"he asks in character as Princess Amy.

He interjects as himself "Leo only replied..."

"But I am going out today.” he replies as Leo.

“Go, and take one of the Ponytas.” he offers as Princess Amy.

“No, I prefer to walk.”he assures the audience as Leo.

As himself, Brock narrates "He went to the plain where he had left Epona, and told her everything."

“Epona, I have married the Princess Amy, the youngest of seven." he explains to an imagined being as Leo. "Everybody laughed at her for choosing me, but I love her, and she loves me in kind. Now she is very sad. Her six sisters’ husbands all hunt every day, and bring home enough to feed the city for a year. Today I want to join the hunt, and prove I am as good as they are.”

As himself, Brock continues "Epona whispered a holy spell. In minutes she returned to her heavenly glory, and Leo to his true royal form."

Cheers go up as Brock retrieves a familiar bow and a quiver full of prop arrows from stage right. "Then Leo put on his clothes, saddled and bridled Epona, got on her back with his sword and his bow, and rode off."

The lights dim, revealing hidden Pokemon targets in the set. "He rode a long way, and shot a great number of bird Pokemon and Stantler."

The audience watches in awe as Brock shoots down a few targets hidden around the stage area for effect. "Fortune was unkind to the other six princes." he explains as he puts his gear away. "They wandered the hunting grounds all day looking for anything at all. Eventually they grew hungry and thirsty, as they did not think to bring food and water."

Giggles go up at this. "Meanwhile, Leo had sat down under a tree, and there his six brothers-in-law found him. By his side was some fresh water, and roast meat." Brock explains. "When they saw him, the six princes gawked at the gold star on Leo's forehead. They came to the conclusion he was a visitor from a foreign land, or one of the Legendaries in disguise. They approached him, and begged him to give them some food and water."

“Who are you?” he asks as Leo.

“We are the husbands of the king's six elder daughters." he explains in a younger version of himself for one of the princes. "We have hunted all day, and are very hungry and thirsty.”

Brock then interjects as himself "Keep in mind they did not recognize Leo in his royal clothes."

“Well, I will give you something to eat and drink if you will do what I tell you." he offers as Leo.

"Anything at all--name what you wish us to do.” he replies as one of the princes.

"You must let me put a hot coin on your backs. Then I will give you food and water. Do you agree to this?”he asks as Leo.

As himself, Brock continues "The six princes agreed to this strange test. They figured that no one would see the mark of the coin. Leo took six silver coins, and heated them in the fire. He laid one on the back of each of the six princes, and gave them food and water. They ate and drank their fill; gave Leo Arceus' blessings, and returned home."

He smiles at the enthralled audience. "What was the purpose of the test of the silver coins? And did Princess Amy ever learn the truth? I will tell you more next week."

Week 369f: The Star Boy (part 6)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"Leo stayed under the tree until evening; then he mounted Epona and rode off to the palace." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "All the people gawked at him as he came riding along. Many of them wondered if he was a Legendary in human form because of the golden star."

Excited murmurs fill the auditorium at this. "As he approached the palace, all the king’s servants asked him who he was." Brock explains. "Since none of them recognized him, the gatekeepers would not let him pass."

Laughter wafts down the rows as Brock goes on "After a moment of arguing, they asked Leo who he was. When he told them, they only laughed at him. They believed him to only be a common man."

He smiles. "Leo told them to bring Princess Amy there."

Intrigued whispers go up as Brock explains "When Princess Amy saw Leo in his true form, she was confused at first. But Leo told her everything."

He explains "He told her of how he had sang for her in the royal garden, how he refused to answer her, how he had told her he was a poor man. He finished the story by telling her how she had chosen him out of all her would-be suitors."

"Oh"s fill the air at this. "It goes without saying Princess Amy was glad that her husband was such a beautiful young prince." Brock continues. "She thanked Arceus for sending her a miracle prince as her husband."

He continues "Then she took him into the palace, and showed him to her father, her mother, and everyone else. They all said they had never seen anyone like him, and all were happy to meet him."

He assures the audience "For a time, all was well. Leo lived in the palace with his wife, and Epona lived in the king’s finest stables."

"Aw"s fill the room, but Brock is quick to remind them "Remember the test of the silver coins? What role would that play in allowing Leo to come home?"

He looks out on the enthralled crowd. "I will tell you more next week!"

Week 369g: The Star Boy (part 7)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"One day, the king and his seven sons-in-law were hearing disputes and requests in the royal courthouse." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Leo waited for a lull in the requests before telling the king..."

“Sire, I too have a request. There are six thieves here in the courthouse.” he explains in character as Leo.

"Where are they? Show them to me.” he demands as the king.

As himself, Brock narrates "Leo pointed to his six brothers-in-law. The people were very much astonished, and would not believe the young prince."

“Take off their coats, and then you will see for yourselves that each of them has the mark of a thief on his back.” he explains as Leo.

As himself, he reveals what the test of the hot coin was far. "So the coats were taken off, and everybody in the courthouse saw the mark of the hot coin from before. The six princes confessed everything. They even talked about how they had laughed at him and mocked him when he seemed to be a common man. Luckily, the king was in a good mood that day, so he just sent them back to the palace."

"Oh"s go up as the audience puts two and two together. "Now, Epona had told Leo the whole story of his birth, and all that had happened to him and his mother." Brock explains, quieting the chatter.

“When you are married, I will take you back to your homeland.” he smiles as Epona.

He narrates as himself "So two months later, Epona said to him..."

“It is time for you to return to your father." he explains as Epona. "Ask the king to let you return home, and I will tell you what to do when we get there.”

Brock next narrates as himself "Leo always did what Epona told him to do. He went to Princess Amy and said to her..."

“I wish very much to go to my own land to visit my parents.” he requests as Leo.

“Very well. I will tell my father and mother, and ask them to let us go.”he replies as Princess Amy.

As himself, Brock narrates "So she went to them, told them everything, and they consented to let her and her husband travel. The king gave them many Rapidashes, exotic Pokemon, and all sorts of presents. The grand procession traveled to Leo's homeland, which was not far off. When they got there, they made camp on the same plain where Epona lived. Anya, the faithful Arcanine, was still there--the treacherous queens had forgotten about her. She welcomed Leo and Epona back, and hurried to inform Leo's father."

Relieved whispers fill the room at Anya's fate. "When Leo's father saw the camp, he was scared at first." Brock explains. "He thought a great king had come to declare war on him. He sent one of his servants to ask whose camp it was. Leo replied..."

"Fear not, I come in peace." he assures the crowd as Leo. "I am a prince who has come to see your country and to speak with you. I wish to give you a grand feast. Everyone in your country must come—men and women, old and young, rich and poor. Bring them all here to me for a week and I will treat them all as my honored guests.”

As himself, Bock continues "Leo's father agreed to the proposal. He ordered all the people of the land to go to the grand feast. They all came, and the king brought his four wives too. The only one not there was the gardener’s daughter, Salvia. No one had told her to go to the feast, for no one had thought of her."

He quickly assures the audience "After all of this, how would Leo reveal the truth? I will tell you the exciting conclusion next week!"

Week 369h: The Star Boy (part 8)

(real tale: The Sun-Moon Boy)

"When all the people had gathered, Leo noticed his mother was not there." Brock begins as he arrives on the stage.

“Has everyone in your country come to my feast?” he asks as Leo.

“Yes, every last one.” he replies as the king.

“Are you sure?"

“I'm sure.”

“I am sure one woman has not come. She is Salvia, your gardener’s daughter. She was once your wife and is now a servant in your palace.”

Excited whispers fill the auditorium as Brock goes on as himself "Leo told his servants to take Salvia to the feast. They bathed her, dressed her in beautiful clothes, and brought her to him. The king thought about how handsome the young prince was. But, he noticed the golden star on his forehead, and wondered where the young prince was born. He also wondered how he knew Salvia's name."

He continues "When Salvia arrived in a grand procession, Leo hurried to embrace her. The four evil queens looked on in shock. They remembered that Leo had not even given them so much as a nod. So why was he embracing Salvia like family?"

The audience listens as Brock goes on "That evening, Leo embraced Salvia again, and gave her the finest food from the nicest dishes. Yet deep down, Salvia somehow knew that this was her long lost son, who the four queens had claimed was dead. She had never lost hope that her son was alive somewhere."

"Aw"s fill the air at this. "At the height of the festivities, Leo told the gathered crowd his story." Brock continues. "He told them of how the four queens had claimed he was stillborn, and how Anya had looked after him. Then he told of how the queens tried to kill him, and how Anya had risked her life to bring him to Epona. He told of how Epona had guided him to another land, and met Princess Amy. He told every word of how he had exposed the six brothers in law for what they truly were. He finished by telling his father that he deserved to know the truth."

Cheers go up at this. "The king was beyond furious when he heard what his queens had done." Brock tells the audience. "He had them stripped of their titles, and sent away to wander the world in exile."

He concludes "The reunited family went to live in the royal palace, and lived there together from that time onward. Not a day passed without the king thanking Arceus for bringing his miracle child back to him."

More "aw"s and cheers fill the auditorium as Brock takes a bow...

Week 370: The Day the Pokemon Danced

(real tale: The Dance of the Animal Court)

Brock heaves a relieved sigh as he meets the cheering crowd. It felt good to be finishing the current season and going into the next with some shorter tales after the series of long epic tales.

Once the applause quieted, he begins. "Everyone knows that the wily Pikachu Sorin is quite the trickster..."

Wild cheers fill the auditorium at the familiar beginning. "But every once in a while, he will face justice for his pranks." Brock explains. "Even then, that doesn't go according to plan."

He continues "One day, Sorin's uncle gave his nephew a fine bow hewn from a sycamore tree..." He gestures to a familiar prop bow. "...and a whistle made of silver. He shows the crowd a familiar silver whistle, to excited chatter. "Sorin's uncle said to his nephew..."

"This bow will not miss, and the whistle will always sound sweet so long as you use them wisely." he explains in a lower pitched Ash voice for the uncle.

As himself, Brock continues "Sorin eagerly set out into the world, and came upon Liepard stalking a Sawsbuck." He gestures to a Sawsbuck target at the other end of the stage. "Sorin offered to help, and proceeded to kill a Sawsbuck clean through the heart."

Applause goes up as Brock fires a shot for effect. "Liepard was amazed by the bow, and pleaded with Sorin to sell it to him, but time and again Sorin refused." he explains as he sets the bow and the quiver aside. "They argued for hours, until Ninetales passed that way, interested in the argument. After hearing Sorin's and Liepard's side of the story, Ninetales suggested that they both travel to see the council of Pokemon, headed by King Entei. Sorin agreed to Ninetales' proposal, and he and Liepard went out to the grove where the council met. They got there just as the council was settling in to hear disputes. King Entei stood in the center, with Donphan and Zebstrika on his left, and Girafarig and Mightyena on his right."

Murmurs go up as Brock continues "King Entei told Sorin to state his case, and Sorin tearfully pleaded his case to the council--the bow was a gift from his uncle, and Liepard was trying to take it. Liepard claimed that the bow was his, and Sorin tried to steal it. The council debated for a few moments, and Zebstrika finally said..."

"Sorin, we find that you were the one that stole the bow." he announces in a mimic of Clair for Zebstrika. "As punishment, you are to turn it over to Liepard and pay 5000 Berries as restitution."

The murmurs turn angry but Brock is quick to assure the crowd "Sorin requested one thing before turning the bow over to Liepard--to play the silver whistle."

He takes the whistle from his shirt pocket. "Girafarig granted permission, and Sorin began playing a reel--the other Pokemon found the tune catchy, and danced to the song, which sounded something like this..."

The crowd claps along as Brock starts a set of tunes for effect. "Sorin played on, and all the Pokemon danced right along with him, until they all groaned with exhaustion."

The clapping intensifies as Brock plays a set of polkas for effect. "King Entei pleaded with Sorin to stop, and Sorin replied he would only stop if Liepard told the truth." Brock explains when the applause quiets. "Fearful at the prospect of dancing even more, Liepard confessed that the bow was Sorin's all along, and paid the 500 Berry fine for lying to the council."

He concludes "Since then, no Pokemon has ever forgotten the day that the Pokemon danced."

Laughter and applause fills the air as Brock takes a bow...

Week 371: The Fey and the Knight

(real tale: The Knight and the Fairies)

"Long ago, near a beautiful village somewhere in Kanto, just before dawn when most of the village was asleep, the band of fairies that watched over the village came out to play." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "They flew toward the fields to collect dew, just as they did every morning. They danced across moonbeams into the lush grass, and there, hidden by ferns and flowers, they set to work."

He explains "Few ever saw the fairies, and fewer still ever met one face to face. This was because they kept to themselves, and only intervened in a human life when absolutely necessary."

Intrigued murmurs filled the auditorium as Brock went on "On this particular morning, the fairies were collecting dew in their tiny crystal glasses when suddenly they heard a fearsome noise. The fairies froze, and that's when they saw the plume of fire shooting up out of the woods. Huddling together, they peered to see what could be making such a racket, and then they saw it-- the fiery breath of a giant Dragonite."

The murmurs turn fearful as Brock continues setting the scene. "The fairies had heard rumors about the Dragonite, because he had brought terror on the land for quite some time. But never before had they seen him. But here he was, in a clearing just a hundred feet away, rearing up on his scaly hind legs, ready to attack a young knight who stood bravely before him. Though the knight looked enormous to the fairies, he was tiny beside the monstrous dragon Pokemon. The fairies watched in terror, helpless to do anything."

Cheers fill the air as Brock narrates the battle itself. "A fierce battle began as the fairies looked on. The Dragonite thrashed his enormous tail this way and that, with enough power to send a man flying into space with one flick. The fairies silently cheered on the knight, who fought with all his strength. They were astonished by his bravery and determination as the battle raged on."

He intones "Near dawn, the fairies saw that the young knight was faltering. He had been gravely wounded, and his armor ran red with blood. The Dragonite reared up on his hind legs, ready for one last, deadly blow. But just at that moment the knight lifted his sword above his head. The light from the rising sun caught the edge of the sword, and the flash nearly blinded the fairies. That flash did blind the Dragonite for one moment -- just long enough for the knight to plunge his sword into the Dragonite's chest, piercing its heart."

More cheers go up at the knight's victory. "The fairies wanted to applaud, but they knew they had to keep quiet, even though this young knight had slain the Dragonite that had for so many years terrorized the people of the kingdom." Brock interjects, quieting the cheers. "They quickly realized the knight's wounds were grave. He had struck the fatal blow with his last ounce of strength, and now he lay silent and still upon the damp earth."

The audience listens intently as Brock continues "Slowly the fairies crept out of their hiding places beneath the ferns and flowers. Careful to look around to make sure no one would see them, they tiptoed to the knight's side. They leaned over and listened to his chest. One wind fairy detected a pulse, and knew there was a chance to save him. A light fairy rallied the others, telling them to bring him some of the Water of Life."

He grins to reassure the audience. "With these words, the fairies collected their tiny crystal glasses and sped through the woods to the secret spring where the Water of Life flowed. Only they and the Legendary Pokemon know where it is."

The audience tensely listens as Brock continues "One by one the fairies dipped their glasses into the spring and flew back to the knight. When their cups were empty, they hung them up to dry on the blades of grass, and then kept watch over the fallen knight. Just as the sun peeked over the hill, the knight began to stir. A few moments later he was breathing steadily, and color had returned to his face. The fairies had saved the brave knight."

Relieved applause goes up at this. "As his eyes began to open, the fairies prepared to depart, but hearing a noise in the distant brush, they turned quickly to see what was approaching." Brock continues. "They heard the sound of villagers running through the forest. They were coming to see who had defeated the Dragonite. As fast as lightning the fairies flew away, and it was only later that they realized they had forgotten their glasses that hung upon the blades of grass. The people, distracted by the knight and the Dragonites' body, did not even notice those glasses, but later, after they had carried their hero away, an amazing thing happened. All those crystal glasses turned into the little white flowers that we call lilies of the valley. Every year, at the same moment the knight slew the Dragonite, the lilies bloom in memory of the generous fairies and the courageous knight."

He grins as he concludes the story. "But as far as I know, no one has ever found the spring of the Water of Life."

Wild applause fills the air as Brock takes a bow...

Week 372: How the Liepard Got His Spots

(real tale: How the Leopard Got His Spots)

"They say that long ago, Kitsune, the holy Delphox, ruled over a vast realm." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "Everyone loved her, for as crafty as she was, Kitsune was kind and just."

He interjects "There was only one rule everyone in Kitsune's realm had to follow. No one in the land was permitted to eat flesh. So most of the Pokemon munched upon ripe fruit. Others nibbled at the sweet grass that blanketed the plains. Still others chewed leaves, and ate the honeycomb. Kitsune's logic for this rule was simple--if everyone ate the bounty of the earth, no one would ever make an enemy of anyone else."

"Oh"s go up at this. "The other Pokemon agreed. They all wished to make no enemies among themselves and no enemies of others." Brock explains. "They all applauded Kitsune. But the wily Pikachu Sorin was happiest of all."

Giggles of anticipation fill the auditorium, but Brock has other ideas. "As time went on, the Pokemon of the realm became trusting of creatures everywhere. They never thought about the dangers that lurked beyond their boundaries. But, sad to say, other kings and queens ruled other lands, and other lands did not obey such rules. Kitsune subjects did not notice prowlers stalking the edge of their land. They could not imagine anyone would ever harm them."

He intones "One day a hungry Liepard from a nearby kingdom slinked into Kitsune's realm. With his agile limbs, he leapt into a tree. There he hid among the branches, waiting for someone to pass by. Before long, Sorin passed beneath the tree where Liepard was hiding. Sorin was on a mission. Kitsune had sent him to tell the other Pokemon that they were all invited to the spring festival."

"We'll have music and dancing and games! It's gonna be fun!" he smiles in a mimic of Ash for Sorin.

He interjects as himself "As Sorin danced along, he did not see Liepard in the tree. As he passed that tree, Liepard pounced and grabbed the little Pikachu in his claws. Sorin cried for help, but even his strongest Thunderbolts were not enough to deter the determined Liepard."

Fearful whispers waft down the rows, but Brock is quick to assure the audience "Luckily, Kitsune was nearby. When she heard Sorin's cries for help, she sang the following..."

(With that, he sings in a deepers version of Serena for Kitsune. Gatrandis favel, secret, edena...
Emusto ronzen fine el balaziis...
Katoradis favel siicletu edena...
Emusto koron zen fine, si....

Applause goes up when the song finishes. "Kitsune's voice was so loud, every branch and leaf and blade of grass trembled." Brock explains as he starts towards a chair at center stage, where his guitar is waiting. "Every creature in the realm heard the song, and all of them ran toward it. Startled, Liepard dropped Sorin. The little Pikachu slipped free and ran as fast as he could into the bush. Kitsune arrived soon afterwards. She grabbed Liepard by the neck, and demanded..."

"Why did you try to kill our friend Sorin? It is against our rules here to eat flesh." he growls as Kitsune.

As he settles in his chair he narrates as himself "With that, she used her psychic powers to send Liepard flying into a nearby pond. But Liepard is an excellent swimmer. He swam quickly to the far side of the pond and crawled onto shore. Then he turned and looked at Kitsune, who by now was surrounded by all her subjects."

"Milady, you are mistaken." he protests in a mimic of James for Liepard. "I would never eat your subjects. I eat only fruit and grass and honeycomb. Surely you can see I was only playing with Sorin."

"Is that so?" he muses as Kitsune. "In that case, I will give you the honeycomb I have just collected. I would like to see you eat it to test your honesty."

As himself, Brock interjects "With that, Kitsune skipped a piece of honeycomb across the pond." He plays a gliss up one string for effect, to giggles. "Liepard caught it and began to chew. But the moment he did, he knew he was in trouble, for the honeycomb swarmed with Combees. They angrily stung his mouth and neck and chin."

Laughter fills the air as Brock plays a flurry of harmonic notes to represent Combee stings. "Liepard howled in pain as the Combees stung him here and there and everywhere. He waved his paws to shoo them away, but they only stung his paws. He rolled on the grass, and they stung his belly and his chest. He rolled again, trying to crush the Combees, but they flew toward his tail and stung that too."

When the last note fades, Brock continues "At last, using every ounce of his strength, Liepard escaped the furious Combees. He fled back to his own land. Kitsune and her subjects watched as Liepard ran away. Because they were kind, they hoped he had learned his lesson. Then they resumed preparations for the spring festival."

He starts a relaxed melody as he continues "Back in his own home, Liepard noticed that in every place the Combees had stung him, a yellow spot had appeared. The spots grew darker and darker each day, and when his children grew up and evolved, they, too, had spots on their skin -- and their children's children, too, had spots when they evolved."

He concludes "Ever since that day, every Liepard's skin has golden spots, reminding them of their ancient ancestor's misadventure in Kitsune's realm."

Laughter and applause fills the auditorium as Brock sets his instrument aside and gets up to take a bow..."
