Week 366: The Wounded Pyroar
(real tale: The Wounded Lion)
"There was once a poor girl that wandered the world doing whatever work she could find--we'll call her Wendy." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "One day she arrived at a cottage near a great city, and asked if they could give her any work for the day. The farmer said he was looking for someone to look after the cattle, so he gladly hired Wendy."
He continues "One morning, as she was driving the Miltanks to pasture, she heard a loud groan that almost sounded human. She hurried to the place the noise came from, and found a male Pyroar lying on the ground. Wendy was afraid at first, but it looked like the Pyroar was in pain. She was a kind young lady, so she decided to see what was bothering the Pyroar. It turned out the Pyroar had a large thorn stuck in one paw. Wendy gently pulled out the thorn, then cleaned and dressed the wound. The Pyroar was grateful for her help, and showered her with lots of Pyroar kisses."
"Aw"s fill the auditorium at this, but Brock intones "As Wendy was busy tending to the Pyroar, the Miltanks had wandered off. She looked all across the plains, but never found them. Her master was angry at this, and shooed Wendy away."
Some angry murmurs fill the air as Brock continues "As Wendy cried beneath a tree, she spotted a handsome young man coming down the path. When he had almost reached the tree, he pulled aside a rock and disappeared behind it."
He smiles. "Wendy couldn't believe her eyes! She promised herself that she would not move until she knew who the young man was."
Intrigued murmurs go up as Brock explains "She waited all night, and at dawn the next morning the rock moved to one side and a Pyroar came out. When he had disappeared, Wendy climbed down from the tree and went to the rock. She pushed it aside, and entered the opening before her."
The lights dim a little, creating the illusion Brock is underground. "The underground path led to a beautiful house. She went in, swept and dusted the furniture, and washed the clothes and the dishes. Then she ate dinner, and retreated to her tree."
The lights brighten as Brock continues "As the sun set, she saw the same young man. Like before, he pushed aside the rock and disappeared behind it. The Pyroar came the next morning. He looked around him for a minute or two, and then vanished into the forest. Wendy left the tree and returned to the underground house to clean it."
He continues "Three days passed like this. Eventually, Wendy found she was no closer to discovering the truth. She decided to get the story direct from the Ponyta's mouth."
The audience whispers excitedly as Brock continues "The young man looked pleased to see her, and said he figured she was the one who had kept his house clean for so long."
He then reveals the truth about the young man. "He explained that his name was Leo. He was a prince under a powerful giant's spell. This was why he was a Pyroar by day, and human by night. He added that the giant had stolen the Miltanks in revenge for her kindness."
"What can I do to break the spell?" he asks in a mimic of Serena for Wendy.
As himself, he narrates "Leo told Wendy that the only way to break the spell was to get a lock of hair from a princess' head. Next, she had to make a cloak for the giant, who lived up on the top of a high mountain."
"Very well. I will go to the royal city, and ask the princess to hire me as a servant." he vows as Wendy, to some light applause.
He continues as himself "With that, they parted. When she arrived in the royal city she asked around at all the worker's guilds. Although many people wanted to hire her, Wendy rejected every offer. Eventually, the princess' lady in waiting came. She offered to hire Wendy as a kitchen maid, and Wendy agreed. Wendy grew to be well loved and well liked in the palace. Before long, word of her kindness and skill came to the royal ears of the princess, Aurelia."
Applause goes up in approval of the princess' name. "Princess Aurelia summoned Wendy, and asked her to brush her hair." Brock explains. "Now, Princess Aurelia's hair was very thick and long, and nearly reached the floor in a long golden wave. Wendy combed it until it was brighter than ever. This pleased Princess Aurelia, and she appointed Wendy as one of her ladies. Every morning, Wendy brushed Princess Aurelia's hair until it shone."
He smiles. "One day, Wendy worked up the courage to ask permission to cut one of the long, thick locks."
He next explains "Now, Princess Aurelia was very proud of her hair. Of course, she didn't like the idea of cutting it, so she said no. But Wendy didn't lose hope, and every day she asked to cut just one golden strand."
"You may have it, on the condition that you find the handsomest prince in the world to marry me!" he demands in a mimic of Misty for Princess Aurelia.
As himself, he continues "Wendy gave her word, and cut a suitable strand. Next, she wove it into a coat that glittered like silk, and brought it to Leo. Leo instructed her to carry it straight to the giant's cave. He warned her to be careful to call out what she had with her, lest the giant kill her."
Worried whispers fill the room as Brock continues "So Wendy traveled far, and climbed up the mountain. But before she reached the top, the giant heard her footsteps. He rushed out breathing fire and smoke, wielding a huge greatsword. But she cried that she had brought him the coat. This calmed the giant, and he invited her to come into his house. He tried on the coat, and it fit perfectly. He was well pleased, and asked her what he could give her in return. Wendy replied that the only reward he could give her was to restore Prince Leo to his true form."
The audience waits to see how the giant will react, but Brock goes on "For a long time the giant would not hear anything of it, but in the end he caved, and told her exactly what to do. She was to lay his hands on his fur and beseech Arceus directly with the Swanna's song."
"Oh"s go up as Brock sighs "But she left that place in tears, fearful of what the spell would do. Who was she to think that she could die by singing that song?"
He continues "She came down the mountain, and rejoined the prince, who was waiting for her at the bottom. When he had heard her story he comforted her, and told her to do what the giant said--everything would be okay in the end. In the morning, when he returned to the form of a Pyroar, form she laid her hands on his fur and sang the following..."
He then sings in character as Wendy Gatrandis favel, secret, edena...
Emusto ronzen fine el balaziis...
Katoradis favel siicletu edena..
Emusto koron zen fine, si...
Applause goes up as the last note fades away. "On the last 'si', there was a bright flash of light, and the prince emerged in his true form." Brock explains. "Prince Leo thanked Wendy for all she had done for him, and told her she would be his bride and none other. Wendy protested at first, and told Prince Leo about the promise she made to Princess Aurelia."
He then reveals the twist in the tale. "So they went together to the royal palace. When the king, the queen, and Princess Aurelia saw the young man, they recognized him immediately. Princess Aurelia explained that Prince Leo was her long lost elder brother, who she had long feared dead."
More applause fills the air at this. "Prince Leo explained everything to his parents and his sister, and they all agreed Wendy would be the rightful bride."
He concludes "And so it was that Wendy and Prince Leo were married in a beautiful wedding. The festivities lasted six months in all, and many were the minstrel's songs in praise of the young couple."
He smiles at the enthralled crowd. "As far as I know, they still reign over that land today."
"Aw"s and applause fill the air as Brock takes a bow...
