Week 373: Darkness and Light

(real tale: The Northern Wizards)

"Once upon a time, in a place where the northern lights danced over the snow and Sawsbucks roamed the forests, there lived two brothers who were blessed with magic power." Brock begins as he arrives onstage. "They could transform into any shape they wished simply by saying or singing mystical words. People believed that wizards sometimes inhabited the bodies of the Braviaries soaring across the sky, the Sawsbucks skimming the steep mountain slopes, or the Ninetales trotting across the fields."

Intrigued murmurs fill the room. "Each wizard owned his or her own hunting ground, and for many years the people would ask the wizards to help them when trouble came." Brock explains. "Sometimes they needed help with day to day tasks. In bad times, the wizards used their magic to create a bountiful harvest. In the darkest, coldest days of winter, people sometimes were lost in the snow, but the wizards could always find them and bring them home."

"Aw"s go up at this. "Deep beneath the earth, in the cold, dark underworld, Darkrai, the Nightmare Pokemon, sat watching and listening to all that happened above him." Brock intoned "He was a hideous creature, with a horrid face and a heart to match, and he wished for nothing but to bring darkness and despair to the world."

"Boo"s go up at Darkrai's description. "One day, Darkrai transformed himself into a Murkrow, and flew over the lake toward the home of one of the wizards. There he hovered overhead and began to sing.

With that, he sings in a gibberish language Yos ginclas yar ga deror ic yost spaurar yott grer.
Yos ginclas il ga hos leta ic ga grosa kytrrar see yott ber.
Yos ginclas yar fichs grirtam pe yost ga rrhara, fosa bea ferosa.
Ga rrhara grirta ga deror il ga hos leta ic ga grosa...

Brock waits for the applause to die down before continuing. "When the wizard heard this song, he stopped to listen, and doubt began to creep into his heart. Darkrai understood the heart of the wizard, and when he saw this, he sang on and on. And sure enough, as the wizard listened to the song, his heart turned from playful joy to sour envy. Darkrai flapped his wings with pleasure, for he could see he had changed the heart of the wizard. He laughed deviously to himself--now he could show the people true power!"

More boos go up at this. "The next morning, the wizard of the dark heart stood beside the lake watching his brother climb into his boat. When he had reached the middle of the lake, the wizard of the dark heart cast a spell--which I will not repeat here." Brock continues. "A terrible blizzard engulfed the lake, carrying ice and snow and churning up the water into waves. The wind lifted the wizard's boat out of the water and flung him into the frigid depths."

Gasps go up, but Brock is quick to assure them "If the wizard had been only a mortal, he would have drowned. But he cast a spell..."

He pauses to sing Rou iitsa ron selga vichii... before continuing "...and turned himself into a Goldeen. As he swam, the dark wizard cast another spell, sending an enormous Talonflame after the little Goldeen, who captured it. Days passed, and then months. The people called upon their wizards for help, but the wizard of the dark heart did not always answer their calls. Still, when he offered them help, they praised him. Darkness remained in his heart, but after some time, he started to soften a little, and sometimes he even missed his brother."

Fearful debate races down the rows as Brock continues "When the Darkrai saw this, he transformed into a Murkrow again and flew to the wizard's home. This time he sang this song..."

He sings as Darkrai again Ga rrhara fiar ga deror ic ga hos leta ic ga grosa.
Ga rrhara dear yott ge yott gas rur yopa,
Yott yal ger dee ra kytrrar pir see yott ber.
Ra yar ga kytrras ic yost spaurar yott grer.

As himself, Brock continues "When the wizard of the dark heart realized that the people loved their lost wizard even more than they once had, envy conquered all other emotion. The next day he went into the forest to hunt and caught many Pokemon, including the Talonflame that had caught the wizard of light."

The audience murmurs as Brock goes on "He picked up the Talonflame and carried it to the people. He told the people that the Talonflame had their beloved wizard, but he was going to destroy him before their very eyes!"

Gasps fill the room, but the grin on Brock's face is a clue there is a twist in the tale. "Minutes before the dark wizard could stick a knife to kill the Talonflame, a voice--a pure and powerful voice--sang the following...

He then sings Gatrandis favel, secret, edena...
Emusto ronzen fine el balaziis...
Katoradis favel siicletu edena...
Emusto koron zen fine, si...

Applause go up at the song. "At this, the light wizard stood before the people, good as new." Brock explains. When he saw his brother holding the knife, he understood what had happened. The people then understood that they must never call upon the wizard of the dark heart, and so he ran far away."

He concludes "Still, Darkrai remained close by, watching and waiting for a chance to bring darkness and despair. The people learned to be careful not to offer him power by letting him into their lives--a lesson we still remember today."

Applause fills the auditorium as Brock takes a bow...
