The only shame is that they removed the option to buy coins.

I highly agree with this. I never understood why Gamefreak removed this feature (I mean there was a reason for the slots).

Anyways, my answer would probably be the slots. Don't get me wrong, I like Voltorb Flip; however, it does tend to get frustrating at times and there are times when I just don't have the patience for this mini-game. The slots in one way or another always allowed me to get a decent amount of coins by the end of it in the older games.

Slots required luck whereas Voltorb Flip required me to think. I like figuring out strategies better than relying on luck, so I have to go with Voltorb Flip.

I don't have the version with the Voltorb Flip, so I cannot compare it with the slots. But I like that in the slot version you can buy the coins you need, because it takes so much time to play and win coins.

I got almost 1000 coins within a few hours at voltorb flip while I lost the same amount at the slots in another game. I love voltorb flip. It actually forces you to think. I hate having to rely on luck.

I wish they also allowed you to buy tms in hg/ss just incase you are in a hurry.

Slot machie gave you the option to avoid the game also it takes to much effort to learn the algorythims so Slots for me

Slot machines All Day!!!!!! Voltorb flip is straight GARBO. I'm not even gonna stunt i cheated at voltorb to get my porygon by downloading a program on my computer that solves it for me cuz the game pissed me off soo bad. I feel pretty strongly against cheating too so that says alot.

Voltorb flip is definitely more addictive, and while not being able to buy coins sucks, it's hilariously easy to abuse this game with a calculator as a person above me had said.

It was much easier for me to get coins with Voltorb Flip. I always hated the Slot Machines because I suck horribly at them. Although, I admit to hating Voltorb Flip at first.

I never got into Voltorb Flip, but I'm assuming it was like Minesweeper (which I never really got into either).
I'd go with slot machines. Voltorb Flip in a casino didn't make sense. If you go into a casino, you always see slot machines, and sometimes other games but the other games are always either luck-oriented or they favour the house. Voltorb Flip is nothing like that... in a real casino the casino would go out of business because it's too easy to win.
Despite what I just said, I did like the game that was in Generation II (which I don't remember, but it might not have been luck-based). I forget everything about it, but I do remember liking it. But at least it made more sense being there since it didn't replace the slot machines... just complement them. The point is, a casino has got to have slots. It can have other things too, but it needs the slots.

Voltorb Flip was better, because you had to rely SO much more on luck with the slots, and in Voltorb Flip it was a lot easier to get coins.

Never really got into the slots, they were too luck based for me to be interested in. Voltorb Flip though? Very fun game, it's much more fair and logic based, and it's relatively easy to win coins there if you know what you're doing.

I'm not really a fan of either (the entire concept of playing a mini game for hours to unlock rare items/Pokemon relatively early in the game turns me off), but I prefer Voltorb Flip, as it actually requires strategy and not straight reliance on luck.

On a slight tangent but still related, is it possible part of Grimsley's inspiration was a joke about how the slot machines were banned? Like, "If we can't have slot machines because they 'promote gambling', we'll put in a gambler!"
