In Riddle Me This, before Magma came out of the lava pit, Blaine said Ash would find it interesting becauase it turned all its opponents into Ash. I forgot how he phrased it, but Satoshi doesn't really mean Ash, does it? So, what did he say in the original anime? Anyone know?

I don't know, but I do think that when they translate, if they can help it they keep what is said as close to the original meaning as possible.

It could easily be a dub line that they threw in, either on their own accord, or because the original had a pun in Japanese that 4Kids had to make sense of in English. There've been examples of both...

In the episode where the Pokemon Center first appears, ep, what, 2? Misty introduces herself and makes some line about being pretty, to which Jessie responds with "I think she's pretty too. Pretty pathetic." This entire dialogue was absent in the Japanese version, and Kasumi had actually introduced her name at that point.

Yet there are times like...

The episode in which Ash meets AJ. The little scene between Ash and Pikachu, in which Pikachu holds out a pillow, was originally a pun based off of whatever Ash said (I honestly don't care to remember). The pun however, wouldn't make sense in English, so 4kids cleverly dubbed it with play on words about "pacing" and "padding" and such.

So I wouldn't be surprised if it was a dub-only line.

The "Ash" probably means the outcome when something is burnt.

That's the point of the pun. He's asking what was said in the raw since Satoshi doesn't translate to ash.

The same thing was said in the second movie, where the legend in the dub said "blah blah the earth will turn to ash"
