The DS has something that most modern consoles don't have. True backwards compatibility. I mean, the New 3DS, the 3DS, 2DS, etc all play DS games... and I venture a guess the next portable system from Nintendo will simply expand on the 3DS's technology instead of replace it, which means the DS games (And by extension the system itself) should continue to live on in the newer consoles. The Wii U and the PC are the only other systems to do that. (PS4 streams the older titles, and I think the X1 emulates 360 titles)
