Re: Masuda to "consider" Ruby and Sapphire remakes: Game Freak director acknowledges

MAybe Pinball or A Pokemon Ranger game?
Pinball...yeah I can see that happening. Although it would lose the rumble feature (like Lylat Wars did on the Wii Virtual Console). However, at this time, only one Gameboy Colour title has been released outside of Japan; which was The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX as part of the Zelda 25th Anniversary celebrations. There was another Japan-only GBC game re-released in Japan though...so it isn't impossible.

Ranger though? I don't see Ranger being a downloadable only game, especially considering that Super Pokémon Rumble, a sequel to a downloadable WiiWare title, got a physical release.

So ranger won't be pu ton VC but R/S will? Doesn't that sound really hypocritical?

Hell no. The Virtual Console doesn't support Nintendo DS titles, but it supports GBA titles.

Re: Masuda to "consider" Ruby and Sapphire remakes: Game Freak director acknowledges

why not release all the fucking pokemon games on VC then?

Yes, why not? If they release RS on VC, they may as well release FRLG and E too. RBY/GSC probably not, since they have already been remade.

I don't see a main series Pokémon game being released on VC being very likely, but I also wouldn't oppose the idea or think that it won't happen, just that it is unlikely. As for comparing virtual distribution to in-store, I would think that in-store would sell more (at the moment), but maybe not.

If they rerelease RS on virtual console (which would probably be Emerald if it was VC anyway), all they would need to do other than port the game is to ensure that the communication features work, and have it work off of the 3DS battery rather than the internal battery. To do a remake, they need to pretty much make everything but the engine and story from scratch. They still have to pay map designers to redesign all the areas in 3D (and whatever new areas they implement to make the game new), they still have to pay the spriters to make new Hoenn sprites, they would probably even have to pay the story-writers to do minor re-writes on certain parts and extend the storyline like they have done in other remakes. While the gross profit from releasing RS on VC would be much lower, the number of people who they wouldn't have to pay would mean that they should make a much larger profit. Only real downside with a VC release is that players like me who already own RS would not buy it on VC since it is the same game, whereas I would buy a remake.

To anyone who is using "they are not playable on the current handheld" as a reason for needing a remake: do we really need to keep every single main series game active at the same time? Most other franchises don't need it. Maybe we just need to let go of the fact that RS are old now.

Also, I don't see RS remakes happening until Gen VI at least. Remaking them now would allow the two games to be played on the same console. And splitting a generation across two consoles is something that I don't see happening. Yes, GS were playable on the GB, and Yellow was enhanced on the GBC, but that was back when the only major things that the GBC had to offer over the GB were color and the ability for infrared built into cartridges (something which GS had on the GBC). Game Freak mentioned that they had trouble developing BW because it was on the same console as the last generation and they needed to make it clearly a major advancement. Splitting a generation across two consoles is something that they are unlikely to do.

Then again, maybe I don't want RS remakes since that was when I started. Maybe I don't want them because remaking them would make me feel old, or because it would involve me playing through the same game again (although I did play Emerald and Platinum as well, so maybe not).

Pokenmon is different even thoufh G/S didn't have to be remade they were... and they could easily move it to the 3DS whichis what they probibly do... I think it's the age thing mistly.. I started from Yellow how d you think that makes me feel lol... And GF doesn't seem the type to chicken out. R/S remakes will be a easy million or so Pokemon always sells over 7 Million coppies around 30 bucks by 7 million or so thats A LOT od cash

Why is it so many people prefer the idea of making R/S remakes for Gen VI ONLY because B/W are made for the DS? It's all because people want the games on the 3DS as to why such an idea would make sense, but WHY have the rest of the 5th Gen on the 3DS anyways? Why do people want a 3DS Mainseries game so badly when the 3DS is backward compatible with DS games anyways? Am I the ONLY person who would actually bother to wait 4 years for the 3DS Mainseries at all?

People are guessing that Gen III remakes will be in Gen VI because they feel that Generation V will be wrapped up on the DS with the next game, as Nintendo will understandibly want GameFreak to move to the newer console; yet GameFreak wouldn't want to face the same problem they had with making BW for the DS - making it feel different than Gen IV.

I think it'd be major shafting... Games like Pinball can easily go on the VC that and the TCG game would be perfect. But I still don't see a Main Game being put on the VC...

Why would they not release a main series game? A main series game would earn them a lot more money than if they released Pokémon Trading Card Game or Pokémon Pinball.
I think Pokémon Pinball is actually quite likely. Although, as you mentioned in your later post, it would remove the rumble feature. TCG games couldn't really handle being on VC - they would be way too outdated. However, they do still release new TCG games to cover for this fact anyway.

It seems very hypocritical that a side game won't be shafted but a Main game wil... and Red Rescue Team?
Red Rescue Team I see as unlikely to be VC, since Blue Rescue Team exists on the DS. Also, they did the same thing for Wii: they "shafted" side series games like Stadium but let spin-offs like Snap get VC releases.

GS were remade because they had been alienated, Johto being separated from all other main series regions.

Perhaps I am a little biased by that fact - I realised it and pointed it out despite the fact that it weakens my argument, which is why I attempted to base my argument on facts not opinions, in order to remove my bias from the argument. Saying that is mostly that is a gross exaggeration.

Yes, they could move it to the 3DS, but in the long run it is only going to hurt Game Freak to split a game between two consoles for reasons that I explained (although it was someone else's post that brought them to my attention).

Yes, but will remakes be more profitable than a VC rerelease? As long as they advertise it enough, it could even be more profitable, in both time spent making them and net cash profit.

EDIT:

It is not so much that people want them to be on the 3DS, but that it is illogical to deny that Pokémon will move to the 3DS within the next few years. Generation V should not be on the 3DS, for reasons that I have mentioned; however, Generation VI should, for the reasons I mention below.

Also, as Joshawott pointed out, if RS were in development (as they would be if they are are going to be released this generation), Masuda would not be allowed to talk about them in the same way he is not allowed to talk about Grey.

Personally, it doesn't bother me to get more Pokémon games on the DS. However, from Nintendo's standpoint, they will want developers to move to the 3DS as soon as possible, since that is where there focus is. Yes, you can play DS games on the 3DS, but the most important thing here is that you can't play 3DS games on the DS; this would mean that an influx of Pokémon fans would buy 3DSs in order to play the new Pokémon game.

Your last point confuses me though. You argue that RS should be this Generation, yet you also want to put off Pokémon on 3DS. If you can wait 4 years for Pokémon on the 3DS, why can you not wait 4 years for RS remakes?

Definitly... 7 dollars and maybe a few 1000 sold on VC compared to 30 and several Million? It will be far more profitble to remake it. Hoenn is alientaed like Johto is. It's not compatble directly to Gen V and can;t be played on the DSi (Which B/W are basicly made for...) or the 3DS... and I doubt many people still have a DS most probibly traded them in for a DSi plus with the Major 3DS price drop and DSi themselves being cheeper I don't see anybody buying an Old DS since they've stopped being made years ago..

Plus B/W are not really DS gamaes they are made for the DSi really... You can't work the C-Gear on a DS so.., the 3DS will be out over a year by the time R/S remakes come out (September maybe?) I don't see them keeping it on the DS or they might make it DSi exlusive which they should've done in the first place with B/W

A remake that people have been asking for since HG/SS and a brand new Generation. Which do you think people would rather have first? Especially when considering how much a success Gen V has been so far compared to the past Gen. The idea of making a New Gen first as soon as possible doesn't always work as planned, because if there were no R/S remakes this gen and we still followed the 4 year timespan Gen III and IV went through, how do you expect to carry out the same Gen for an additional two years with ONLY B/W and a 3rd Version? The 4th Gen probably had issues with this since it was released nearly 2 years after Emerald, and the fact the game system for D/P was so slow pased only made things worse for the games, hence why sales would probably have been slower than with B/W. B/W, a 3rd Version, and R/S remakes would make it easier for GF to develop the 6th Gen since those 5 versions would keep fans busy until being able to release the 6th Gen's initial two versions.

Edit:

Think of it this way:

800 Pokemon give or take.

A brand new region, plus new storyline.

New characters.

Most likely full 3D due to the 3DS's outstanding graphical capabilities.

And you've only got 2 years to develop the game.

Does THAT seem easy at all? Because 2 years is what people say is how long Gen V would be if R/S remakes aren't made this Gen.

He has a point... it will take a long time to finish Gen VI... and the usual time span for a Gen is around 4/5 years... having R/S and Grey wil give them at least 3 years plus the year B/W has been out to prefect it... SO they could easily make the R/S remakes to make easy money ANd buy themselves time to perfect Gen VI... they aren't ones to Rush GF..

In response to the possible version names a page or two back, I'm guessing TerraRuby and MarineSapphire. Aren't there the Terra and Marine Caves in those games? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gen VI's games had a "Virtual Console Park", allowing players to transfer Pokemon over from Virtual Console re-releases, which would be the main thing preventing GameFreak and Nintendo from just starting to publish Pokemon's library on the VC (as opposed to more self-contained games like Mario and such).

Any logical reason you feel that way?

The reason Stadium and Stadium 2 were left out of the Wii Virtual Console is most likely due to their reliance on the transfer pak and the Gen I games.

Any proof that a VC release would only get 1000 downloads compared to 30 million physical sales? All I'm seeing from you are random claims and no concrete evidence when asked.

Also, you can use the C-Gear on a normal DS - I play my Japanese White on a DS Lite and it works perfectly fine.

He has a point... it will take a long time to finish Gen VI... and the usual time span for a Gen is around 4/5 years... having R/S and Grey wil give them at least 3 years plus the year B/W has been out to prefect it... Generation I was only 3 years long (RG released in February 1996, Gen II released in November 1999) and Generation II was only 3 years long; GS were released in November 1999 and RS were released in November 2002. So there is no 'usual time span' considering that half of the current completed generations were only three years long. If Grey is to be the last Generation V game and is released next year in Japan, it would fall neatly into Gen I/II's timelines.

The Pokémon Company was one of the first companies to receive a 3DS development kit, and they've had one since at least early 2010. Considering that when BW came out, Tajiri, Masuda, Sugimori and the other big wigs most likely went to the Gen VI drawing board while the lower-ranked employees worked on Grey (as what happened after DP were released), 3 years is quite a lot of time to work on a new generation.

Black and White would have been released in 2009 if it hadn't been for HGSS. Game Freak admitted that they only started the games' actual development (as opposed to the conceptual work) in 2008 because they had been busy working on Platinum and mostly HGSS in 2007. Even in 2008 and 2009, they weren't done with HGSS.

People who say digital downloads won't sell games don't know what they're talking about. If anything, it's hardcopy distribution that's dying - that's why it makes more sense to release the older Pokemon games on the Virtual Console platform in the future. It might take some minor effort to emulate compatibility for trading either between downloads or porting Pokemon forward into current gen games, but it also means:

* Nintendo goes pure profit from the releases since they don't have to pay for production or distribution costs.
* The issue of where to get the old Pokemon is permanently solved.
* Fans stop whining to them about remaking decade old games every 3 years.
