I want to know if there are any references to Misty in DP or if she is mentioned there apart from 34th episode of DP when she is mentoned to Dawn and her special lure is shown. If you know then write name of that episode or it number or at least context of her reference/mention. I watched anime from ep 1 to 657 last year. Before that last time I had seen anime was when I was little child more than 10 years ago and even than it was just from beginning of anime to start of Johto after that i think TV had stopped airing it I still dont know why it was popular pokemon cards were selling very good I had basically full album of cards from Generation 1. Rest of Johto AG and DP i had not seen till last september to december. I like Misty most then Dawn and May maybe because of nostalgia who know. It saddened me when she had not appeared in person in DP and I think there were references and was mentioned there apart 34th ep. but i dont remember for sure. Normally I woud simply watch DP once again but tomorrow I start my study because its part of the year when at university you have to study a lot more etc. so I will not have time for it till start of February. So if you know any references/mentions of her in DP then write them here.

Hi, Kasumi is also my favourite of Satoshi's friends (and I'm still waiting for her to return in person!)

Aside from DP 34, I think the only other reference in DP was a picture of her seen in Takeshi's special after DP ended. I don't know if you want to know about references after that point but I'll put them under a spoiler in case you do!
In BW she appeared in flashbacks in BW 116 (when Lizardon reappears and Satoshi is reminiscing) and BW142 (when Satoshi remembers some friends/rivals), and in the Japanese ending theme Te o Tsunagao.
Nothing so far in XY.

@pokemon fan 132 may remember if there was anything else which I've forgotten to mention!

Hi anomalus, ill try to help if i can in answering to your query.:)

Since ii kanji kindly already covered Misty references, ill just add on what she already said in case something was left out.

In DP Misty had around 3 direct or indirect references. She was showed during one of DP openings ("High Touch!"), followed by being mentioned in "Buizel Your Way out of This!" episode which showed her special fishing lure made for Ash as gift.

We also saw Misty being showed on photo picture among other Brock friends on wall in his DP special called "Pewter gym-the Greatest Crisis Ever!".

In regards to other series afterwards:
In BW (Unova) series we saw Misty through flashbacks when Ash recalled his past with Charizard during episode "
In last BW episode "The Dream Continues!" professor Oak indirectly referenced her by answering how Tracey is missing because she called him to Cerulean gym being showed as part of ASh memory when he remembered all of his friends.
And in one of BW endings "Lets Join Hands!".

Sadly i have nothing else more concrete to share with you such as Misty return in person, because Misty didn't got anything for more than 10 years(last in flesh return in series happened during 2005).

But i have to admit how Misty/Kasumi is my favorite character from pokemon anime as well liking her rich personality full of fun quirks and lot of emotion making for very endearing and complex character. She has great pokemon, interesting background and unique dreams too(in wishing to become water master and E4 member idolizing Lorelei).

Hoping we will see her one day return(for more than brief appearance), get update and sequel to her in many ways left unfinished story deserving to be part of show again.

I'm not sure whether this is true or false, but I think there was a clipshow during early DP in which the narrator was Misty? I'm not sure, but I think I read it somewhere.

Moreover, once the Portuguese voice actress for Misty recorded a message for Ash wishing him good luck for his Sinnoh league! Though that was completely unofficial and was done for entertainment purposes only.

She's in some of the Japanese openings/endings, like the second DP opening and one of the BW endings. Other than that she doesn't appear anymore beyond flashbacks.

I don't think so.
But that reminds me of the important one which me and pf123 forgot:
She and Satoshi ran the 14th episode of the Rocket radio show during BW. I still haven't managed to hear this but it sounded great from reading about it.

Waaaaaaaaaaaah that's so lovely!!!!!! :'(

Thanks for answers. Its sad that Misty has not appeared physicaly since from beginning of battle frontier arc or at least more times referenced/mentioned in DP and BW series. Well lets hopa that one day she will return and will stay longer and not just for 1 - 2 episodes.

Its unlikely to expect to see Misty appear at all at this point of the anime, beyond the possibility of a 20th anniversary special. Most likely Misty won't appear beyond flashbacks for the entire duration of the anime until it ends someday.

I think it's so sad how the anime staff confirmed during the Battle Frontier Arc that Misty would in fact make return appearances in the future, and outside of flashbacks and photos, she hasn't. I mean, out of all the PokéGirls, only her and Serena have actually been confirmed to be full-fledged love interests for Ash, so it would be nice to see how they react to one another.

The Battle Frontier arc began in 2005, obviously what the writers were thinking back then is not the same thing they're thinking now over a decade later. Also I seriously doubt the writers want any shipping confrontations in the show, so that's also why I don't see Misty appearing in XY at all.

They really should consider it. Haven't ratings been plummeting in recent years? Ash's cut and dry routine of "meet a pretty girl, become best friends, catch only a handful of Pokémon, rematch half of the gym leaders after losses, somehow half-ass a victory against the evil team which disbands, and loses the league" is getting seriously stale. Have him catch far more Pokémon, AGE HIM UP FOR CHRISSAKE SO HE CAN ACTUALLY GO THROUGH PUBERTY AND LIKE GIRLS, and actually introduce some damn drama into the show. Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh are in the same boat Pokémon is; franchises around the 20-year mark meant for kids and encompassing anime, manga, games and cards. They still managed to switch it up quite a bit in their anime departments (heck, Naruto's on its... third timeskip? Fourth? And everytime YGO reboots, they skip at least a decade.). Why can't Pokémon follow suit? A shipping war is exactly what would bring back the older viewers (PokéShipping), while keeping the newer viewers (AmourShipping) firmly invested in the future of the show.

Really, in order for this to happen Misty would need to make some sort of major appearance (Elite Four/Champion of a new region?) in one of the games, which would more or less force the anime's hand. Seems unlikely.

Why would the writers care about this? The anime's been running for 13 years after Misty left, and the show has gone on without her for 70% of its run. Older fans are not going to make any impact on the ratings at all. Even most of the kids who grew up with AG and DP as their first sagas have likely outgrown and left the anime by now. The Pokemon anime was never meant to be watched by the same group of people from beginning to end. That's why the writers rarely call back to older characters in the first place.

Misty's already been in several games since she left the cast in 2002, (FR/LG, HGSS, BW2, etc.), and none of that correlates to an appearance for her. Likewise May didn't appear for ORAS promotion either, so its pretty obvious nothing from the games "forces the writers hand" as you put it.

As far as Misty chances of coming back in pokemon goes, whether that would be in Kalos or in some future generation i think hype, popularity and interest for animated series callbacks to past and return of popular older faces shouldn't be discarded easily.

Afterall if there didn't existed any financial potential, interest from older generations of fans and merit behind such moves big projects Yugioh, Dragonball or Digimon with its Tri Adventure decided to create with their staff decisions in investing more in older characters and their stories wouldn't be considered in first place, let alone polute such huge success and increase of those anime reputation like its case now.

In Pokemon we see all the time how much dust, positive reception and notably high interest for anime can deliver more continuity and giving recognition to important characters and story plots from past(like Ash Charizard, return of Misty or May in AG/DP, Pokemon Origins mini series etc).

I know and im fully aware personally myself how past patterns dont go in Misty favor let alone fact of being downright ignored for last 10 years. But being original and potentially most iconic pokemon female while minimal might work in her favor in prompting writers/director to use Misty to boost ratings and do fresh twist to this show adding more continuity and opportunity for younger generations to better comprehend pokemon show past and everything which helped build on adventure and ultimatively Ash character itself.

Because unexpected return of mega popular and important characters becoming prominent again, delivering updates and follow up on what has been happening for all this time intertwining them in new storylines pushing adventure forward in my eyes has potential to attract older fans back, spark interest among younger generations for such characters .

Due to knowing Ash from before, playing vital role in pokemon story before and having well established friendships wanting to know from where this comes from. Along with delivering breeze of fresh air and versatility to storyline with sequel of their own adventures, dreams etc.

Potential:
God knows Misty has lot of unused material in regards to her water master dream, interest for E4 members, feelings developed for Ash, her past which has many unanswered questions etc).

Putting whole shipping thing on side, just Kalos itself has ton of potential to advance Misty story through competing in big tournaments advancing her dream(Whirl Cup proved thats necessary to become water master), meeting E4 Siebold who is water master in gamer, mega evolving Gyarados, learning about Ash Greninja transformation using her expetrize as water specialist in helping Ash to understand better his pokemon feelings and learn herself how to extract from water pokemon their best forming emotional link with your pokemon(expected from type masters) etc.
Serving as springboard toward bigger popularity increasing reputation of pokemon anime.

Granted chances are abysmall, but i would like to believe how writers and pokemon fandom itself haven't given up completely on Misty character just yet and forever.

Surprise surprise, Scott makes an appearance to throw cold water over anyone suggesting they'd like to see Kasumi return

I hate to say it but I do actually agree with him on the point that bringing her back to start a "shipping war" would not be a reason to at all. Please. Kasumi was so much more than Pokeshipping. I would love to see her return within a battling capacity as, you know, that was kind of her goal. I haven't yet given up hope altogether, as PF132 has said there is a lot of potential and we do have an anniversary coming up and Kasumi is arguably the most important ex-travelling companion so...

The Pokemon anime was never meant to be watched by the same group of people from beginning to end. That's why the writers rarely call back to older characters in the first place.

Just because they didn't mean for it to be watched by the same group of people doesn't mean it isn't. Pokémon knows most of their fanbase are older 90's kids, which is why they've done stuff like Pokémon Go (which was marketed at adults) and Pokémon Origins (which was a bit darker than the main anime). And if they wanted to create true synergy in the franchise, all they'd need to do is mature up the anime and create some stronger continuity. I'm not even saying get rid of Serena, Bonnie and Clemont and bring back Togetic, Misty and Brock, I'm just saying have them show up more often and y'know... introduce more mature elements like a romance subplot, conflict between the main characters... Something to make even the filler episodes (which all have a cut and dry formula) stand out from one another.

Hell, 4Kids Team Rocket had all of this, which is why they were most people's favorites. Don't know why they can't extend those qualities to the heroes.

Not quite the Diamond and Pearl series but the whole character of Iris was a big nod to Misty, ie the monotype gym leader who travels with Ash, the fact she is a gym leader is a surprise, has a fear of a certain type of Pokemon, the sort of tomboyish nature. Also Serena clearly showing feelings for Ash could be a nod to how Misty seemed to display feelings for him. Ash gives the same response, a spurn.

Face it, guys. Tarzan has a larger chance of returning to Kingdom Hearts than Misty has of returning to the anime outside of flashbacks and openings/endings. I'm sure that the current writers don't even want to acknowledge Misty's existence nowadays. But did they when they choose to add Iris to the cast in Best Wishes?

None of this stuff was aimed at people who watched the regular anime. Pokemon Go, anything the games do, even Origins, aimed at the videogame fans. You do realize most fans of the videogames have always hated the anime, even when it first started, right? Origins was meant to be closer to the games, what their version of the anime would be like. These are the type of people who hate Ash and don't want anything to do with the anime.

They did do this during AG. Misty and Tracey got frequent specials and cameos. But it was probably easier back then because May and Max were the only new characters, and Misty and Tracey were the only old ones at the time. My guess is once DP started and the writers had May and Max leave too for Dawn, the writers realized around that point they had too many older characters off the show, and it would only increase as the series progressed (which it has), so they realized there was no reason to stick with older characters anymore.

Why do you think May wasn't brought back for ORAS promotion, and why Dawn will likely never appear again either? Its not like Misty is the only one being forgotten, its happened to all the female leads after her too after their last cameos. May actually hasn't appeared since 2008 which was now 7 years ago in itself, and Dawn's BW cameo was likely her final episodes.

Maybe, but you cannot ignore that many older fans who got into pokemon through anime and wached it regularly until one point never hated its concept and characters.
They may have eventually abandoned pokemon show.

But its not because they hated pokemon anime from very start or grew out of it(some did, but not all). Otherwise we wouldn't be encountering every so often fans from older sagas like OS or at this point AG deciding for one reason or another(one of them is amourshipping in Kalos sparking interest from quite notable group of pokemon veterans) to get back into pokemon asking questions like "where is Misty and Brock?", "What happened to May?" etc.

Infact there are many fans out there who still has fond memories of pokemon series but got tired and disappointed of status quo and unchanging policy which followed pokemon show for more than decade.

Either because of repetitive story undergoing soft resets whenever new generation starts, because of stagnation of characters reflecting negatively on their development, because of frequent cast changes forgetting about important main characters with show discarding potential of having stable main cast and strong continuity. Because of rehashed plots used over and over again with show not having charascteristics of one big adventure which builds on itself.

This kind of fans still like pokemon for what it was and many would be wiling to go back to it if something changes and writers break this fiormula. Such as letting Ash win league and push his story forward, bringing back older main characters they grew up with and liked(especially notable demand is for exactly Misty and Brock/May to lesser extent)., In possibly doing small time skip, aging of proptagonists by 2 to 3 years opening door toward deeper character development made with them and fulfillment of otherwise impossible promises. Like Max starting journey and having promised battle with Ash for example. Etc, etc.

Many among this kind of older fans dont want change in form of rebooting whole anime and starting with new protagonist either. They simply want better written anime with currently existing characters and universe within which they have been created not ignoring potential they have to deliver more rewarding product on screen. Wishing to see popular past characters from their childhood they grew up with, adored, were engaged in their personalities, dreams and development were given proper respect and recognition.

And i cannot deny that Misty is one of this characters with so many people over they years asking and hoping for her return becoming relevant again in anime.

Because quite frankly putting effort and time in making foundations on which you can gain higher percentage of viewers who can turn in customers which both watch show and buy merchandize products isn't waste of time and money.
.If its going to result in older fans from OS, AG, DP etc coming back to it.
Or even better providing new outlets and original ideas on table in having better success in attracting today small kids toward pokemon.

My guess is once DP started and the writers had May and Max leave too for Dawn, the writers realized around that point they had too many older characters off the show, and it would only increase as the series progressed (which it has), so they realized there was no reason to stick with older characters anymore.

May actually hasn't appeared since 2008 which was now 7 years ago in itself, and Dawn's BW cameo was likely her final episodes.

Hence why replacing everything and everyone except TR and Ash definitely didn't helped in longer run in my opinion. Only devoiding this anime of stable cast and consistent story.
In constantly bringing new companions while abandoning older ones when there exist room and established groundwork with previous characters where writers could just pick up from where they stopped breathing new life into their stories and characterization advancing forward lettng them be explored further.

Thus keeping show fresh instead through better development and new ways in using already established characters you created in story like One Piece, Fairy Tail, Naruto etc did or are doing for instance..
