Misty's Wanting of Specific Non Water Type Pokemon

Everyone should know by now that Misty is enthusiastic when it comes to her type speciality, Water Pokemon. However I do recall her taking interest in specific non-water type Pokemon.

Here are some examples:

  • She had interest in Oddish during Bulbasaur's introductory episode
  • She really wanted to catch Jigglypuff in it's introductory episode (despite not showing any interest in catching it afterwards, despite it following Ash and friends around)
  • She showed interest in catching Clefairy.
  • She wound up training Togepi/Togetic
  • She offered to catch Ash's Charmander
  • She showed interest in Brock's Vulpix
  • She found the Cyndaquil rather cute in the introductory episode of the Johto starters
  • She has a strong friendship with Ash's Pikachu

I think this goes to show that despite her intense love for Water Pokemon, Misty does respect other types of Pokemon (except for Bugs). I believe that she understands that ALL Pokemon types have their good points. I imagine that if she encountered another Water type specialist, she would have at first found the individual to be fun to be with. But as soon as that person started talking about how ALL other Pokemon types are inferior to water types and would gladly do horrible things to non water type Pokemon, Misty would angrily turn against that person and would want to see Ash kick the trainer's ass for their trouble.

This would've made for a great episode and provided great character development for Misty IMHO.

Thoughts?

Pretty sure that happened in the orange islands

I never thought that Misty didn't consider that other types had their good points. It always came off like she just cared about Water Pokemon the most more than anything else. Even with Bug types, she was mostly just afraid of them and even that changed in some cases if they were more traditionally cute. Although, I say that she didn't really train Togepi/Togetic. Aside from that flashback when attempting to teach it Headbutt, she didn't do anything with Togepi and it ended up being primarily a cute item for her to hold than a Pokemon she trained. I guess we could also count the battle with Pikachu when they were fighting over Totodile, but that was less of a battle and more of a cheap excuse to make sure Pikachu wouldn't get a victory due to how it would easily defeat any of her Water type Pokemon.

As for what would happen if another Water type specialist would do and say terrible things about non-Water Pokemon, I'm pretty sure that everyone would have gotten mad at them and Misty would probably challenge them herself first, even if they weren't interested in battling with her and they still ended up battling with Ash. I'm not sure if that would necessarily provide development for Misty since she clearly liked all types of Pokemon, aside from most Bug types, so that was never really an issue in the first place.

Reason behind Misty wanting other pokemon types beside water is quite selfexplanatory. While she from very start showed preference toward water pokemon mainly using and training them. Over course of anime reasoning behind showing affection and interest for pokemon which she finds cute and adorable like Odish, Jigglipuff, Sakura Eevee(kimono girls sister from Johto) or Teddiursa for example. Wasn't because they would necessarily play relevance in accomplishing her dreams, but simply because of her girly, dreamy side of personality liking romance, flowers, small and cute pokemon she could hug and cuddle etc.

Misty appreciated and liked in reality all kind of pokemon she met so far except bug types and Gyarados which she had long time fear for understandable reasons.

As for other part of question in how would she react if some trainer berated every pokemon type beside water, im pretty sure Misty would get annoyed and sassy starting to argue knowing her headstrong nature. Challenging him to battle and standing up for other pokemon and those who train them.

Not quite sure how that would give Misty character growth, but this thread gave me idea of another much more plausible way to create story arc through which she can get legit growth. Regarding her views on pokemon types.

If we look down closely on Misty she has tendency to evaluate pokemon more by looks rather than their "inner beauty" which can be noticed in her big fear from bugs, or selecting water pokemon she wants to train and have through her own criteria(i say own, because she finds some like Tentacruel beautiful, while many abhors at them). For example ones like Butterfree, Ledyba or Heracross she considered cute or tolerable not even fearing it. On other hand those she considered creepy, ugly or crawly like Caterpie, Ariados, Beedrill, Pinsir etc she cant stand for her life claiming to be ugly, nasty creatures on several occasions.

Now how this matters to her water trainer profession? As long she has formed prejudices about pokemon with look deciding what kind of reaction she will have, is holding her back on road of becoming water master . I think it would be very, very interesting if she ever encountered Surskit which is half water, half bug(fans for years speculated on this)or those with very unusual design like Binacle. It could allow for some great development helping Misty to overcome her fears and preconceptions about pokemon growing in stronger trainer because of it, increasing chances of becoming water master or Lorelei apprentice(E4 are basically top mono trainers) in future and fulfilling her dream.

Looking back its intriguing how much untapped potential there exists for this character.

p.s. Apologies if this was innappropriate, but i just found this idea too interesting to not write it up.:)

I will agree that it was mostly her girly side showing through and little more. However, I do find an interesting point to make here considering pokemon that are half another type besides being Water. Apparently, this is not an issue since from the very beginning, she has a dual typed pokemon, Starmie. She would later catch another, Corsola. Many have thought what would she think if she ran into Surskit. I can't be too sure myself.

I have mused many such things on being a mono-type trainer. Indeed, it is more than just sticking to one type. One must understand the other types as well. It is no different than being a skilled trainer of any other pokemon. True masters can overcome their weaknesses and prevail over all kinds of pokemon. I will agree that even when she left, she was far from accomplishing this, and still isn't even close. I think that as a gym leader, she will still learn such things on her own, though. One doesn't have to go on a literal journey to discover what's out there. She's in a position where the experience comes to her rather than the other way around. We will never see her do this in the anime, and while she's more interesting in the game, she is still just a gym leader for now. (I enjoy she has Floatzel, it fits her so well) I still think one can assume she does eventually become a strong trainer.

I know what you mean. Misty at gym can still improve by training and battling challengers, spending time with her pokemon and getting to establish better bond with them.
Which is definitely valuable experience.

Although at end of the day in order to develop more creative, complex battle style(something Cilan realized too when joining Ash), battle stronger trainers, be noticed and acknowledged for your talent on global basis entering tournaments with tough competition and truly understand single type weaknesses and strengths i conclude how traveling is recommended and needed to become top mono trainer mastering its type. .

Like Wallace who before becoming champion left his position of gym leader to train and prepare for challenges which gave him pass to pokemon league and right to fight for champion title. Even in Koga case it was stated in game cannon how three years passed after leaving gym and becoming E4 implying how he went through some sort of quest existing tasks he needed to pass and train more.
And if im not mistaken Misty in games started following this path saying in GS and HGSS how she plans to go on journey to improve skills and battle stronger trainers worshipping E4 Lorelei. Which applies to anime counterpart as well leaving gym place to go on venture in becoming master until sisters forced her to go back home at end of Johto.

There is also Whirl Islands. Writers established within canon in Whirl Cup how there exist prestigue tournaments for water trainers you need to enter and win to become water master. This event directly focused on title of becoming water master with sea priest Maya and prof. Elm explaining connection between title "Alpha OMega of water pokemon"winner of tournament gets being one of things water master from past times contained. In learning how to understand sea creatures and use them to full potential, being recognized and respected among all water trainers worldwide.Showing how there exist benchmarks, test in form of water tournaments through which you would have to prove your worth to other trainers and test out your bond with pokemon and battle skills in coming closer toward this dream. I wish we got more expansion on what was said there, but for what it was it shouldn't be ignored.

Interesting that you brought up Misty pokemon team from games., Because i too managed to find myself liking her team from games alot covering nicely disadvantage water pokemon may have through Quagsire. Having pokemon with good defense and offense abilities like Floatzel, Milotic or even Jelicent.
With many of her pokemon being half of other type.

Where as in anime out of 10 known pokemon she has 6 are pure water type with one suspectible to evolve in dual type(Horsea). While Starmie, Corsola , Gyarados and Azurill share with water typing from other specie. Pretty interesting team imo though.

I do wander in case we ever see her again how much that ratio may have changed in meantime and what her pokemon team looks like now though.

Well, being in a gym alone can be stagnating if only for the matter one doesn't see people bringing pokemon from other regions to your gym too often. However, I will contest one doesn't need to know ALL pokemon to be able to deal with them. The most problem you can run into is a type combination that you wouldn't otherwise know about. When I was playing the postgame of White, I realized that if I didn't know the pokemon as well as I did, being suddenly thrust into this world where anyone can have anything that's in 5 regions at that point would've been pretty tough. I often question if regional barriers even mean that much, though, since the postgame of a lot of the games features pokemon suddenly popping up in the wild that weren't there before, and they are more known for being in other regions as well. I'll have to go and check Battle Frontier if third gen junk was living in Kanto. Yeah, one can benefit better from traveling, but I imagine that in the pokemon world, that is for more advanced trainers, and Misty hasn't reached that point yet. Then again, just how good is information in the pokeworld? I will stress that I don't believe that all regions live in a bubble and don't know about the rest of the world. I also imagine there are resources to find out about all the pokemon. True, it's not the same as facing them in person, since anything can happen, but at least you'll have an idea of what they're capable of. I'm not making this an excuse or anything, I'm just saying it's possible. Misty is not in a good position, to be honestly. Either she is the gym leader, or no one is, and the League will have to take matters into their own hands. Maybe she can do it later in life, but not now. (particularly if she can convince her sister to battle again)

To Dragon Char: Very, very interesting points.
Its true that after some time spent at gym and not having chance to experience new knowledge, pokemon and strategies can lead to stagnation. As universe expands more new pokemon and types(like fairy) are revealed, new innovative techniques and ways how to properly develop defense and cuonterattacks against pokemon to which type you use can be at disadvantage are developed.

There are discovered new secrets and way how to maximize utility of pokemon to full potential(like mega evolution). Along with new challenging tournaments which gather all kind of powerful trainers being organized where you could learn about more profine ways of battling and strategy needing to shift your abilities to much higher level.

This became more noticeable to me when gym leaders even went to very distant regions to catch and learn about new species(like Clair did traveling all the way to Unova in search for Druddigon). When Fantina leaves gym for months to develop new battle styles. Cilan decided to join Ash realizing how at gym he cant meet nearly as much innovative, unorthodox battle strategies like Ash displayed with all kind of obstacles put on road while traveling and unusual events you enter forcing you to come up with creative, out of box solutions to survive and have chance
to fight back. Which gym couldn't provide for him and challengers in daily basis he faced.

In short gym can serve as stepping stone, but i gather how in order to go on higher level as trainer and develop creative, stronger battle style going on journey is more required.Once you are ready for more advanced challenge as trainer.

Since by traveling Misty could expand horizons being possible to meet stronger trainers or other water trainers which dont come to gym, learn new things about water pokemon much more by observing them in natural habitat than she could ever at gym as well entering tournaments to help her to improve skill gathering at one place higher concentration of high level, skilled trainers and allowing to show your abilities and how adaptable as trainer you are to wider grpoup of people ion global basis.
Not to mention that way Misty is able to enter water tournaments or tasks someone needs to enter to advance this goal which Whirl Cup clearly established to exist going by prof. Elm and Maya talk about relation to water master title.

Its same like with real life and education for example.
Once you finish high school learning everything you could there only way for enriching on your knowledge and going higher lies in moving on to higher step like college, later signing in PHD program etc in order to evolve. In sport like soccer once you learn everything you can in local league and club you originated from way for ranking up as player, developing your skill and talent to higher level of play only way to do so lies in transferring to higher league(in soccer terms A league) going on better, more prestigue clubs which participate in more intense competiotions, assess their reputation and strength vs pther European clubs of high quality like Champion league etc allowing player to evolve his play and knowledge on much higher level.

I also concede with you on point how Misty with whole Cerulean situation isn't in enviable position either. She was portrayed as character stuck in catch 22 situation. Showing desire to travel again burning with desire of mastering use of water types being prideful when she tamed Gyarados, but at same time feeling she doesn't have much choice currently but to stay making best out of it and help sisters to prevent gym(her home)ending closed due to their carefree attitude.

Although if writers ever wished to show to us continuation of Misty story and unfinished dreams of becoming water master, give insight in improval of battle skills, her pokemon and understanding of pokemon its in their hands if situation will stay that way. Or they will clear up rather convoluted situation with Cerulean making older sisters more responsible(Daisy at least showed some interest in battling during chronicles with Luvdisc). Or providing substitute in form of unknown relative or parentrscould return like Brock father Flint and mother Lola did turning out to be top water trainers. Invoking insecurity and fear in MIsty side of failing to live up to their expectations.

Getting follow up and update to her character. ;-)

Misty said that she wanted to use a Water Stone on it to make it a Vaporeon, which is a water type, which cancels out Eevee from this list IMHO.

It's still a normal type. It doesn't matter what she intends to do with it. I know what you mean though, I suggested it to be of a little annoyance ;p

Would she have considered Charmander cute and adorable? because she did offer to catch Ash's Charmander herself in it's first episode.

I think Misty is more than capable of wanting/liking other Pokemon despite her water type speciality. We've seen Cheren in game, although he's a Normal type Gym Leader he still had other Pokemon in the past. Also I always assumed that Gary in Gen 2 was a temporary Gym Leader, or if he wanted to stay full time he'd have to monotype eventually.

As for respect, I think she even does respect Bugs, she finds them creepy yeah but that doesn't mean she can't respect them, she was never outright nasty to them, she even bonded a little with caterpie.

Based on interest and willingness to catch Charmander on her own initiative, i believe she would.
In general Misty is open toward not just water but just about any pokemon type. Especially if she consider it cute, funny, pretty and someone she could find common language with.

In fact Misty also showed to have knowledge and understanding of other pokemon specie in battling too using quite skillfuly Vulpix, Bulbasaur and Pikachu in that Kanto princess festival or sometime Ash Pikachu alone when she was separated from group with him in some Johto episodes.

Only pokemon type she isn't very comfortable about would be bug pokemon, though mainly those which are crawly, look like bees or spiders and slimy freaking her out. Although she does prefer more pokemon which design wise appeal to her eye the most while avoiding ones which dont suit her taste that much such as Octillery, Omastar or Relicanth for example..

Hence why as i mentioned before i think meeting whole Surskit line up would develop groundwork for some very cool character development to get past her irrational fears and intolerance becomiong more open and appreciating toward all kind of water pokemon, allowing to achieve closer level of understanding of whom they are and where true strength lies. Especially if after finally coming to accept Surskit regardless of being half bug she witness his evolution in Masquerain(pure bug,/flying pokemon)making her shocked and creeped out. Having to find way how to make amends with that and appreciate it regardless of her own personal fears, issues.

This reminded me how its kinda shame that taking care of gym filling up for lazy sisters holds Misty back in exploring new regions and meeting pokemon in wild to learn more about them, enter strong tournaments and discover more innovative ways of preparing strategy through other traveling experts in quest of becoming water master.
