What is your opinion on them? Have you ever played an MMO before? If so, which one(s) and do you still play them?

So I downloaded the free version of Final Fantasy XIV Online and it is the first MMORPG I have ever played in my entire life. It's taken a little getting used to, because I'm not used to playing a role in battle. I'm used to playing offense and that's it. I went with the Gladiator class, because swords and armor are cool. Lol. And as I said, offense. Turns out Gladiator isn't simply offense. The first dungeon I went through as a Gladiator, I failed to completely understand this and made everyone mad. (of which I didn't notice for a long time because I had never paid much attention to the chat).
I had also picked up the Conjurer class because there was a certain mount reward I 100% had to have. I did the my first runs through dungeons with that class and understood the role quite well. So I think I may stick with the healer class.
So, that's my first experience with an MMORPG, and I do think it's fun to play a role and be surrounded by other people online. It does make playing features like the dungeon a bit stressful, though. Especially because I completely failed everyone that one time. =(
Which world/data center are you on? I'm happy to send a friend request if you're looking for friends \o/ I'm on Sargatanas in the aether data center!
ooof though sorry about this experience. xiv generally has a very good community, but sometimes people do get frustrated if someone doesn't understand their role at all. But that's okay - we're all new and need to learn at some point. Hopefully it didn't upset you too much! Mostly everyone is very nice, but if you're brand new, you can always mention in the chat you're just starting out. That way people will be aware and can point out if you're doing anything wrong.
But yeah, gladiator is a tank class, so you're expected to walk ahead in dungeons + grab mob aggro so they don't attack your teammates. Best way to do this is to turn your tank stance on when you're in a dungeon (Iron Will in your case), which will keep you higher on the aggro list, and from there using Shield Lob to focus an enemy from a pack on you when you're walking towards them. Then using Total Eclipse (close-range AoE) to grab any nearby enemies in that vicinity. From there, if there are multiple enemies around, I'll keep using Total Eclipse to wittle them down along with the rest of the group, and using Provoke if a stray mob leaves to aggro on someone else (usually the healer) to get them back onto me. It's a learning process, but tanking is actually quite simple now since they reworked the class for Shadowbringers. You can try watching this guide to tanking in Sastasha (first dungeon in the game) and this general tanking guide with pros/cons if you're ever interested in continuing the class. Tanks are always in demand and a lot of people seem scared to level them, so it does make it feel very rewarding to play.
Healing is fun and as a healer main for several years I'm happy to help if you ever aren't sure about something <3
