I'm gonna have to go with the art styles for the last two series of Ash's tenure. Maybe they're more modern, maybe they allow for more dynamic animation, but the fact remains that the returning characters—and Ash in particular—barely resemble themselves. I Choose You! and Distant Blue Sky! handled that a lot better.
