More AniPoke fanart, but mostly Bashou & Buson this time, and some BW! characters

It's been three years since I last shared art here and given I've started roleplaying Buson (Attila) again with an old friend who plays Bashou (Hun), that's what most of my art's been focused on lately, so I figured I'd make a new thread! ^^ There's still some Trip, Lillie, Iris art too, but I'm mostly inspired by rp lately (some of them will have rather odd scenarios because the dreamwidth rp game we're playing them in an Okinawa-inspired fan region that's disconnected from all of the canon ones, in its own time and space, it seems, so no TR, so they're just working... ordinary jobs, after settling in. Buson's a sailor here and Bashou's a programmer. : D; Buson winds up befriending a very sweet Eevee that, initially, kicked his butt when he was trying to poach Electric type Pokemon, PFFT.)

[Faraway Place RP-based] Bashou and Buson at a ryokan (traditional inn.)

Upon first arrival at Gukuru House, Bashou feels right at home because he grew up in a traditional home in Johto, whereas Buson’s awkward and nervous about accidentally breaking/ripping stuff, feeling like the proverbial Bouffalant in a china shop, but he’s over the fear in less than a day. The tasuki is solely because Buson refuses to wear anything that covers his arms (guns out is a way of life for Buson, okay), it serves no practical purpose here.

I tend to forget I drew this! It’s a bit lopsided, as I drew it leaning down and looking at the paper sideways. The setting is referenced from this photograph (Nuvema town is heavily based on Brooklyn, so it felt topical!) The paper is very thin, so a stenciled frame on the page underneath shows.

A headcanon younger Buson! Happy and content… and then, he grew up to be a poacher and racketeer.
I assume, much like Musashi/Jessie, he was stuck in poverty and didn’t have the grades, money, or connections for a better life, saw how hard work never got his parents anywhere, took several wrong turns trying to help out, then wound up too deeply involved to get out or even (in a stroke of bitter irony) ever see his family again in person without endangering them. ^^;;;;

Bashou & Buson went to Hoenn to capture Rayquaza and the TRio always catch/receive regional Pokemon when travelling, so I think Buson might catch a Mawile (he trains the more delicate Steel type, Skarmory, compared to Bashou’s more fearsome Steelix.)
It’s quiet, serious, and only seems to like training and tea. It’s more like Bashou’s Pokemon in personality… ^^;

This is only very loosely RP-related, but what-if scenario: Trip and Shamus in jail, PFFFT.

Trip, like Paul, is usually polite and formal when addressing his elders in the original (he even calls Dent [Cilan] “Dent-san”!)… Shamus, uh, is not.

I think they’d only be in for a night and a day because Trip’s family bailed them out. I’m starting to think “bail money for Shamus” is set aside each month, just in case, but Trip’s never gotten in trouble like this before!

So, now that I’ve seen these pieces of official art, I know Bashou and Buson’s intended height difference…

Buson’s a head taller than Bashou!

Bashou just has a shorter torso and longer legs, similar body type to Shootie/Trip’s, actually, just way more pronounced because Bashou’san adult–so their waists line up despite him being shorter than Buson.

So now, I can draw Buson being even more obnoxious.
(It seems like they were inconsistent about it in Legend of Thunder and sometimes, Bashou was up to Buson's sunglasses[!], but by the Manaphy movie, he's down to being a head shorter, so between that and the official art, looks like this is the closest to intended height difference... or Bashou sometimes wears elevator shoes, who knows, man.)

An old sketch while I was still learning to draw their designs (Buson's droopy cornered sanpaku eyes give me such trouble. Early Kanto Muk eyes, pfft.)

Buson and Evie the Eevee get caught out in the rain on the night he returns to Ultern, as it’s monsoon season.




A couple of drifters sleeping in shifts.
Basically a Faraway Place RP-based AU where Manzana (the reformed criminal ^^; ) doesn’t take in Buson before Bashou arrives here and he just. Falls back on crime (TR doesn’t exist here, so he’s just a small-time crook), sleeping rough, and has no motivation to aim any higher because he’s directionless without Bashou. … and then Bashou falls in with him when he arrives.
The good: Bashou’s the external motivation for Buson to aim higher!
The bad: Buson’s going to constantly worry about Bashou and if Bashou was doing badly in the Pokemon Center’s lodgings (with a locked door!!) because it’s communal, how bad is he going to take sleeping in alleyways and structurally unsound abandoned buildings???



Based on a silly idea my rp partner had, on seeing a photograph of the Legendary Beasts carousel (probably an old PokePark attraction):
“I could’a been riding the real deal right now…”

This one's based on a fic by my Bashou, Simone (kyohansha)! Specifically This Place Called Home, if you like Bashou & Buson’s friendship and partnership (but mind the trigger/content warnings for each chapter, because it’s bleak, heavy, and uncertain, before you get to the happy ending and stuff like the scene I drew down here–and even with the happy ending, these two are pretty unhealthily codependent/enmeshed with an unbalanced power dynamic that could so easily become a noose around the other’s neck, so again, mind the warnings.)

I'm flattered and can't stop blushing, even though it really is equally split between my imagination and my rp partner (Simone/kyohansha) as she writes Bashou and a good chunk of my art is RP-based. ;///; But thank you so much!! Yeah, I fixate on odd characters, pfft, before that, it was Shootie (Trip)! But I do love to write and draw.

You've encouraged me to share some of the even more oddly specific and niche ones I felt too shy to share before, so here.

RP-based and headcanon-heavy.

An unruly younger Buson repeatedly makes trouble until he’s given a punishment by superiors that truly disturbs him, Bashou accommodates him, listens even if he stammers, even takes him camping for a change of scenery (so he won’t wake up alone or feeling trapped, as he was kept confined in restraints, alone, as punishment)—and thus earns his loyalty. Being alone in silence is scarier to Buson than any pain or exhaustion (he doesn’t like being alone with his thoughts!), but he’s too embarrassed to talk to anyone else and doesn’t wanna be a downer after the experience, since he’s so shaken up… but Bashou is safe (to him), so that’s who he goes to!
So think of this as Bashou and Buson’s equivalent to the TRio’s bread-sharing and campfire conversation—except Bashou’s much more cagey about his own fears and bad experiences, he’s not going to tell Buson what those are, even if he provides distractions and advice. Buson just knows he has nightmares a lot because he can hear him.
And yeah, Bashou manages to get an ego trip out of being kind to his partner too, but that's just how Bashou functions.

For a completely different change of pace, a roughly drawn silent comic based on the fact that my RP partner frequently has to remind herself Lt. Surge is not Buson when she's playing Pokemon Masters, which made me imagine Bashou alone in Pasio...

Another friend (Spagonia) jokingly said he'll have Kojiro (James) and (Musashi) for comfort at least no....... but I think they might offer an odd sort of comfort exactly once! And then, he'd probably avoid them, because they're honestly too much, PFFT.

Buson hits a guy with his head, Bashou mimics him and successfully accidentally breaks a guy’s nose in the attempt, but might’ve given himself a concussion. (He’ll be okay!)

“He’s taller than you, man, you could’a gone for the chin instead’a the temple! Hit it like a header!”
“… what’s a header?”
“… ‘least you got his nose, that’ll knock him out.”

I drew them in those uniforms by default, but if Bashou still doesn’t know exactly what works for him in a fight, it’s probably a younger, lower-ranking Bashou and Buson, pfft.

Encounter with Morelull on Chichi Island!
I was either going to draw Bashou & Buson back-to-back while Bashou threatens the Morelull with Steel types unless they back down or the bit seconds before when Buson strikes a Morelull with his lantern and sends it flying like a baseball because it was going to drop on Bashou. ^^;
(This is from the same adventure with Evie the Eevee above... she was more diplomatic and kind, Buson was nice to the Morelull when they looked cute and harmless, but the second they attempt to leech energy off Bashou, Buson whacks 'em. Bashou's ready to use violence, Buson just falls in line with whatever Bashou wants to do. He's nothing if not loyal! : D;;; ... ultimately, Evie's gentler means wins out and they get a safer passage than they would've on their own, pfft.)
The red stuff is not blood, it's ink bleeding from the previous page. It's rough and sketchy, but the composition was really fun.

... Buson was too shy to say what the whole adventure was for until the end, but it was for a flower that reputedly gave good dreams if you drink it as a tea, he wanted something that'd help Bashou ^^; It did help!

As for some new art I drew today, have two doodles, one to celebrate the one year (!!!) anniversary of Faraway Place (the dreamwidth roleplaying game [well, it has no application process, so more of a dressing room or sandbox!] I'm playing Buson as well as all of these other characters in):

Aaaand Lillie splashing around. ;3; (I just think the way she curls her hands like paws sometimes is cute and relatable since I did the same a lot as a kid and still do if my hands are wet or touched something dirty, fff It's like a very particular form of raptor hands.)

This comic is an older work and is very dark in its implcations, even if nothing is shown, so mind the warnings.

Buson says goodbye to his Pokemon after taking an injured Bashou to be treated makes him lose trust in Buson (who was basically the only person Bashou did trust before this which he can't help but see as a betrayal due to trauma, even if it was only to save him...), he becomes even more paranoid, mistrustful, and unstable, and finally dies, which Buson will inevitably blame himself for and feel as though he were the one who killed him.

It just doesn't work out well for these two in this scenario.

(The implication on the last page is he sees Bashou's eyes (... and ashes) and any time he shuts his eyes, so he just can't rest. The guilt's eating him up.)

... it's a really depressing scenario and we discussed other, better ways it could turn out, but it wouldn't leave me until I drew it. ^^;;;
Interestingly, even while writing and drawing it, I didn't realize it concerned a very similar moral dilemma Kenta and Marina faced in taking Raikou to be treated when it feared humans and did not want them to approach or touch it. The dub conveyed it as a fear that Raikou's condition will detoriorate in captivity, too.... but primarily, Marina wondered if it was wrong to forcibly take Raikou to be treated, against its will (]but what about how Raikou feels?), but Kenta's insistent that he couldn't just ignore Raikou while it was in pain. So, even if it's against its will and they all know it's traumatized and cannot trust humans because of how they sought to subjugate and exploit its powers in the past...

This is your reminder to see The Legend of Thunder in Japanese if you haven't already.

On much lighter note, for the one year anniversary of the dreamwidth Pokemon roleplaying game, Faraway Place, I drew a bunch of the characters I play with frequently. ;3; So, here's a bunch of doodles.

Mayday Foreman, Carrie's character based on the protagonist of the Pokemon Topaz ROM hack. Frequent menace, but endearing. Sorry about your villain decay arc that's reduced you to being grade schoolers/primary students' test of courage!

Sweet, sunny, and brave little Evie the talking Eevee! Always a good friend. Pines for her trainer who she was separated from for years by Team Rocket. Has a sweet crush on him like Bayleef had on Ash. ;3;

Calla, scrunching up her nose in focus, her nose slightly sunburnt, with a sailor's neck kerchief for a makeshift bandana! Very seriously listening to advice on how to avoid being a sitting Ducklett for crooks from a self-confessed crook (reformed, kinda, here, anyway.)

Trip, who's starving and exhausted but Too Stubbornly Proud to Accept Help or Handouts (the problem with basically being the human equivalent of a Serperior, the Regal Pokemon), considering eating very clearly inedible figs. Ash making faces to silently tell him not to do that. Trip stubbornly does it anyway and immediately regrets it. (For further insult, a Pokemon tries to eat it, then promptly gives up... it's only palatable to Flying types, it seems.)

Latest event, a bunch of NPCs shrunk, so when Buson went to the Pokemon Center (easy enough for him to go to one when he isn't widely known to have been a criminal here!), the... nurse was a little kid with a Poke Doll, pfft.

Buson left to his own devices would... probably be living in his own filth. It's a good thing Bashou's neat and tidy. ^^;;; They can compromise on clutter, but not rotting remnants of food. We don't want bugs!!

Bashou likes the outdoors, he just forgets sometimes. He just hates it when there's people to deal with.
It's not so bad outside, might see a nice leaf.

Buson once got banned from the onsen of the inn he’s staying because he broke three rules at once (got drunk, cannon-balled in, and attempted to swim in the onsen… and by swim, I mean something like that Golden Boy clip of the guy fighting for his life in the water.) The owners are very patient and he was only banned for a few days, but… ^^;;;

Now for something light-hearted!

I spent exactly one hour and two minutes at a concerning time of day to bring you the worst, most socially awkward pseudo visual novel in which Bashou (poorly, clumsily) navigates a social situation.

You only get a decent ending because Buson thinks this is hilarious, and therefore cheers up, rather than truly taking any offense. Everybody else and you can just imagine double minus signs over their heads like The Sims with every interaction, PFFT.
(The good ending for Bashou, by his estimation, probably is alienating everybody else so they leave him alone unless absolutely necessary and finding his pokeball holder, because where did it go?)

Back on the Faraway Place roleplay-based art, there was an event recently where a bunch of NPCs, including reformed Flare agent Manzana (who took Buson in and helped him get legitimate work) de-aged (like the nurse in the art I posted earlier!), and everybody had to deal with the resulting fallout of a criminal Manzana on the loose (... Buson dealt with it, by which I mean abducted him and tied him up, because Buson and because he wouldn't listen to reason and kept attacking some kid he thought was Calem--actually X from PokeSupe, yay, alternate worlds and timelines.)

ANYWAY, all that aside, Manzana's player (Spagonia) and I discussed a role reversal where if an adult Manzana had to deal with a younger Buson for a day. ^^;;; He's rowdier, but still not a hardened criminal yet, gets upset at the idea of being stuck in a place where he can't even phone home, as he's sole breadwinner to an elderly couple he's worried about (... my headcanon for Buson is he went down that path to make money fast because his parents were hard workers but were poor all their life, so he just wanted to provide for them--then, got too deeply involved with Rocket to ever visit them in person, and then, they died and he's stuck in TR, alone, so that becomes his whole world and his family. Partly why he's unhesitatingly loyal to Bashou, he's all he has!! : D;;;; )

....... a younger Buson still doesn't deal with his feelings well and expresses most stronger emotions with anger and violence, like his older self... he trashes Manzana's place because he's angry and desperate and there's no way off these islands.

He also, at one point, tries to threaten to drown Manzana because he thinks he's in cahoots with the kidnappers no, Buson, this place just brings people in on its own somehow, but Manzana just. Puts him in the same hold over the sink.

Because I'm terrible and I love angst, in our current thread, Bashou and Buson go exploring a cave and we plan for Bashou to, eventually, acquire a Key Stone and Steelixite. ^^ ... the terrible part is Buson gets killed [temporarily, Pokemon movie style, don't worry, he'll revive...!! All the "drifted" (player characters, non-native to Ultern, the roleplaying game's region) characters cannot die here and will revive shortly after by the shrine.], but they've only heard of that and not seen it and it's still painful and upsetting anyway, so.

He'll revive as he was before in game, along with his Pokemon, etc., but just as AU ideas, we discussed what it'd be like if Buson came back as a Pokemon instead (an Arcanine would fit his steadfast loyalty!)

My handwriting is bad (me reading it again, my BU looks like a GU somehow?!) but consider: it’s kinda good if you imagine it being written by a giant dog monster scraping his nose in the dirt!

Bashou would be pretty emotional, both because he is happy to see Buson again, but also sad he came back as such a "lesser" creature... ^^:;;

... and now for a much more light-hearted and silly take, what if Buson came back as the tanuki Pokemon (Faraway Place has a lot of the GS beta Pokemon as native species for the Ultern region), because he's the tanuki to Bashou's kitsune.
... unfortunately, Bashou wouldn't recognize this Pokemon species and he also would just be thinking of the mythological creature (since the Pokemon world also has kitsune and kappa mythology, despite no kappa Pokemon for the latter example, poor Matori with her bowlcut unflatteringly likened to a bespectacled kappa. "Megane-kappa!")
Everyone's holding the idiot ball today, the gag relies on everyone not being at their smartest today, don't take it too seriously. ^^

Based on an idea Simone (my Bashou!) had while playing PL:A... doodled on scrap paper (the non-sticky back of pharmacy stickers during a lull at work.)
Bashou & Buson as a totally legit alternative to Survey Corps, a pair of catchers for hire who might exaggerate the dangers of certain feared Pokemon pay them protection money. Nothing wrong with that eye, I just messed up while drawing it and blocked it out.

And even more light-hearted and fluffy, Buson giving Manzana a hug and also, Evie the talking Eevee. ;3; Super fluffy!

Just a couple of drawings to illustrate Bashou and Buson's dynamic, particularly as we roleplay them. : D;

Buson is basically Bashou's morality pet/acting conscience/tether to humanity, but given he's also a villain and hardened criminal... he's a lot more permissive and not a shining beacon of goodness and innocence (PFFT) like most villains' morality pets. If they both agree someone's got to go down, you're out of luck in reining in Bashou. Note: the man making the call is Tatsumi/Tyson, another silver uniformed Rocket who works under Shiranui-hakase/Professor Sebastian! I mean, just because Buson's funnier, friendlier, and has a bit more of a conscience than Bashou and will try to avoid murder if possible, doesn't mean they're not still both murderers or that he's not an enabler complicit in everything.

Everybody else’s thoughts on Bashou: Bashou’s insane, sadistic, and far more violent than necessary, he’s genuinely scaring us and should be stopped. His partner’s friendlier and seems more normal, let’s ask him!

Buson’s thoughts on Bashou: He’s a wounded Deerling and the world was cruel to him, so what if he came out the other side a little messed-up, he’s absolutely justified in lashing back, maybe it’ll heal him.

Everybody else: ……… oh my God, they’re both insane.

... but Bashou scares even Buson sometimes, so he'll still try to ask him to consider other options and talk him out of something if it's too inexcusable, as Buson holds no real authority in their dynamic [Bashou leads, Buson follows, despite them being partners--and usually, this suits them both perfectly!]... or he'll just fall in line, even if he's afraid or guilty. He's unquestioningly loyal and that's both one of Buson's more protagonist-like/heroic traits and also, one of his worst/most damning because they'll commit atrocities. : D;;;; See: multiple counts of attempted child murder in The Legend of Thunder.

It's also literally why they're named those names, Yosa no Buson as a poet admired Matsuo Bashou and quite literally followed in his footsteps, despite living a century apart, following the path Bashou wrote of in his travel memoir... Buson spent money restoring the hermitage Bashou stayed in, the bashou-an, held poetry gatherings there, built a monument to Bashou, and requested he be buried near it, which was honoured. (Buson's own disciples are also buried surrounding him. ;~; ) So Buson's literally named for his unhesitating loyalty to Bashou.

Oh my goodness I'm absolutely in LOVE with your traditional pieces. Your style is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and reminiscent of 90s manga!! (God I love that Iris piece you did so so so much as well) Your work just has such a nostalgic warmth to it that would make such a soft and ethereal comic should you ever draw your RPs in full... As someone also motivated to draw by her RPs, seriously, I love the little details and peeks into the stories with each of these!! I can't wait for more.

Thank you so much!! Yeah, 90's shoujo manga was a big inspiration and I also love some shoujo manga that's even older (70's-80's), so a kind of dreamy, ethereal look with fluffy and flowing hair's often a goal for me!!

Our roleplays with these two tend towards dark, but sometimes also sweeter scenes... you're in luck, though, today, I drew another traditional piece! Not based on something I wrote, but kyohansha's stories--she has Bashou grow a garden in the home he shares with Buson at the end, since he's fond of growing things and grew up on a farm... the Comfey's name is Makana, she's more like a service Pokemon that helps calm him down. She's not a battler and certainly doesn't go on any missions. No involvement in crime for this Pokemon. She's in the garden, sipping nectar from flowers.

Probably one of the earliest signs something’s wrong with Bashou (you know, aside from nightmares, power trips, etc.) that Buson would notice would probably be Bashou dissociating while sparring, especially if they grapple, which would probably frighten Buson and make him think he injured him or caused him to lose consciousness or something if he goes blank and/or limp as a rag doll. (You know, like how Larvitar used to harden and go unresponsive if approached by any human other than Ash due to the trauma it suffered as an egg at the hands of poachers? ... like that.) Poses heavily referenced from photographs of military grappling like this, etc.

Cute things only today, with some lazy colours slapped on!
My wi-fi and reception are very weak today due to a storm, but here's a couple of drawings from the past week, starting with my old fave, Trip (it's been a while!) drawn on SEptember 23 in honour of the 13th anniversary of the first episode of Best Wishes!, the first day of Trip's journey, and so, quasi-officially, his birthday. xD; His doted-on Vanillite ate the cake off his fork before he could, then started to cry because he bit down on an empty fork rather hard. ^o^;; Didn't mean to hurt him!!

My latest drawings are much more on the fluffy side! Even this Bashou & Buson one is more sweet than usual (based on a Discord RP with my partner, Simone ^^)... the only CW is for Bashou's passive suicidality/canonical apathy regarding whether he lives or dies, but this comic's ultimately just sweet, really!! (So, here's a small bit of a roleplay as a comic, Blanc. ;3;/)

This was one's older, some doodle based on an RP meme (so, not part of any game, much more casual, often one-off, but we've written them interacting a few times!), in this meme, where characters have a secret plastered all over them via magical, unremovable sign. The context is a bit complicated, but... he gets a pep talk in context from a Kris (decidedly not Marina!) who he's been friendly with before she knew of his crimes. : D;;; (Kris also had a crime plastered on her, although it was for kind of covering up for one of Silver's...)
Because she was being unexpectedly sweet and earnest when he basically claimed violence is all he's good for anyway and he denying that and trying to insist there's more to him than what he does as a TR member's genuinely touching! (... and then he just writes it off as something a kid would say, but. It was still cute for like, a second.)

I drew seriously on my iPad for the first time in years! I can work better on the larger screen and I also made sure to use references to get their designs as accurate as possible (except where I prefer to draw with more detail, like the hair), I kept drawing for hours, didn't realize how long, and hurt my wrist, oops... I'll share that second, but first, here's another comic I drew on the phone I didn't share earlier! ^^

A silly little comic, poking fun at the fact that that my Buson in Faraway Place (but also in memes, but we're not including characters not in Faraway Place--sorry, Kris!!) keeps ending up attached to various kids--to be fair, most of the drifted are kids, so he has more in common with them, and one sad story and Buson's likely to be very protective of someone he sees as a friend. ^^;
The weather is hot, so Bashou's hair is in a high ponytail, Buson's wearing a kariyushi (Okinawan equivalent of a Hawaiian shirt!)

Now, for the piece I drew this morning! It's a darker piece, so under spoiler tags. Just Bashou and Buson being totally normal and sane.
By which I mean Buson not getting involved in something, Bashou getting very slightly hurt relative to people he hurt or even killed, but using this to guilt-trip Buson???
